DIFFERENT METHODS OF PHILOSOPHYZING

 SOCRATIC METHOD
- To engage in a discussion to find truth and to reach an agreement.
 DIALECTIC METHOD
- To engage in a discussion and seek argument, but to resolve conflict and
contradictions.
 SCIENTIFIC METHOD
- To find truth through experimentation, inductive and deductive reasoning, hypothesis and
theory tesing.
 HISTORICAL METHOD
- studies past events and analyzes them to find insights and understanding.

DIFFERENTIATING FACTS AND OPINION


 FACTS
- are statements observed to be real or truthful
- are verifiable and contains ideas or information that can be proven
 OPINION
- are statements that go beyond providing fact.
- are influenced by biases
*It it important to be aware of bias in order to objectively and critically examine points of view.
- provide conclusions or perspectives regarding certain situations
- the basis of making an argument
- needed to convince to your claim

FALLACIES
- arguments based on faulty reasoning
- they are characterized by flawed logic or misleading tactics aiming to persuade or convince
others.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF FALLACIES


 Ad Hominem
- attacks the person instead of the argument
 Ad Baculum
- using the threat of force to advance an argument
 Ad Misericordiam
- using emotions such as pity and sympathy
 Ad Popullum
- the idea is presented as the argument is acceptable because a lot of people accept it.
 Petitio Principii
- Assuming the idea to be proven true; circular argument
 Cause- and-Effect
- assuming “cause-and-effect” between unrelated events
 Fallacy of Composition
- assuming the whole is true because the part is true
 Fallacy of Division
- assuming the part is true because the whole is true
