Problem Set 3.1 Trigo
Problem Set 3.1 Trigo
PART I: Solve the following problems, show your complete and neat solution on the space provided. No solution NO point.
1. A 4-meter-long ladder leans against a wall making an angle of 32◦ with the wall. How far is the bottom of the ladder
from the wall?
2. From a distance 20 meters from the base of a pole, the angle of elevation of the top of the pole is 25 ◦12’15”. What is
the height of the pole?
3. A man looks out to the sea from the top of a cliff 50 meters high. He sees a boat that is 200 meters from the base of
the cliff. What is the angle of depression?
4. A person starts out 17 miles from the base of a tall mountain, and looks up at a 4° angle of elevation
to the top of the mountain. When they move 12 miles closer to the base of the mountain, what will be
their angle of elevation when they look to the top? Answer to the nearest degree.
5. The angle of elevation of a hot air balloon, climbing vertically, changes from 25 degrees at 10:00 am to 60 degrees at
10:02 am. The point of observation of the angle of elevation is situated 300 meters away from the take off point.
What is the upward speed, assumed constant, of the balloon? Give the answer in meters per second and round to two
decimal places.
6. Two observers on the ground are looking up at the top of the same tree from two different points on the horizontal
ground. The first observer, who is 83 feet away from the base of the tree, looks up at an angle of elevation of 58°.
The second observer is standing only 46 feet from the base of the tree. (Note: you may ignore the heights of the
observers and assume their measurements are made directly from the ground.) (4 points)
a) How tall is the tree, to the nearest foot?
b) At what angle of elevation must the second observer look up to see the top of the tree?
7. Two observers (located at points A and B in the diagram) are watching a
climber on the opposite face of a chasm. The chasm is 81 feet wide. When observer
A looks down to the bottom of the opposite wall of the chasm, he must look down
at an angle of depression of 51°. However, observer A sees the climber at an angle
of depression of 20°. Observer B will see the climber at what angle of elevation?
(4 points)
PART II: A
1. How many triangles are determined given A = 111, a = 7, b = 7 2 ?
2. How many triangles are determined given A = 170, a = 18, b = 10 ?
3. How many triangles are determined given A = 56, a = 16, b = 19 ?
4. How many triangles are determined given A = 74, a = 17, b = 23 ?
5. How many triangles are determined given A = 80, a = 211, b = 185 ?
B. Solve the following problems, show your complete and neat solution on the space provided. No solution NO point.
1. If the side lengths of △ABC are a=9 and b=10 with∠A opposite to a measuring 26 degrees, what is the measure
of ∠B opposite to b?
2. Two lookout towers are 50 kilometers apart. Tower A is due west of tower B. A roadway connects the two towers. A
dinosaur is spotted from each of the towers. The bearing of the dinosaur from A is N 43 o E. The bearing of the dinosaur
from tower B is N 58o W. Find the distance of the dinosaur to the roadway that connects the two towers.
3. A ship leaves a port on a bearing of N 65E for 324 miles then changes direction at a bearing of N 22E for 123
miles. How far is the ship from the port? Find the bearing of the ship from the port.
4. A 300-ft tall vertical antenna is to be placed on a hillside that makes an angle of 8° with the horizontal. It is to be
anchored by 2 cables from the top of the antenna to points 80 feet uphill and 90 feet downhill from the base. How much
cable is needed?
B
sin A − sin B
5. In triangle ABC, AB = 2, BC = 4, and AC = 5. Compute the value of . 4
sin C 2
A
5 C
6. Neil, the hobbit, wanted to measure the distance between the two towers A and B, separated by molten
rocks. He used the method of triangulation and came up with the figure below. What is the distance
between the two towers?
