ESTIMATING VERTICAL REINFORCING BARDS FOR COLUMNS Estimating Bill of Materials by Vicente A. Tagayun
LONGITUDINAL BARS IN CONTINUOUS BEAMS AND GIRDERS
Estimating Procedures Formulas for Calculating Straight Length of
Size/Diameter of Longitudinal Bar
Longitudinal Bars
1. Study the FOUNDATION PLAN and the FLOOR FRAMING PLANS of the project 12mm (1/2") Bar Straight Length = Beam overall Length + 0.30m
to find out the number of columns to be erected. Classify or group them by length
of column and size of vertical bars
16mm (5/8") Bar Straight Length = Beam overall Length + 0.35m
20mm (3/4") Bar Straight Length = Beam overall Length + 0.45m
2. From the DETAILS OF COLUMNS AND FOOTINGS or SCHEDULES OF 25mm (1") Bar Straight Length = Beam overall Length + 0.55m
REINFORCING BARS of the project, determine the number and sizes of vertical
bars used in each column.

3. Determine the length of a typical column in each group by computing the distance
between the bottom of the footing to the top of the highest beam or girder
supported by the columns.

4. Calculate the length of each vertical bar by adding to the height of the column
minimum factor for determining the straight length of bars in beams found on page
D.5, based on the diameter of the bars.

5. Compute the total length of all the bars in each column by multiplying the number
of bars per column by the length of each bar

6. Get the total length of all the bars for all columns in the group by multiplying the
total length of all bars in each column by the total number of columns

7. Finally, calculate the total number of full-length bars required by multiplying the
total length of all the bars for all columns in each group by 1.10 – to add 10% as
allowance for splices and wastages; then dividing it by the selected length of full-
length bars to be ordered from the supplier

Assuming that the full-length bars to be order is 6.00 meters, the

calculations are shown at right.

ü For C – Purlins:
ü Divide the length of the top chord (each side) and divide it by the purlin
spacing plus 1 to get the number of sets needed in the entire length (as
seen on the roof plan). This is where you nail the roofing materials. Total
length shall be divided by 6m which is the standard length of purlins
ü For Sagrods:
ü Determine the spacing of purlins and the number of trusses. Typically, it is
located in between purlins and between trusses. The length of sagrods is
basically equal to spacing of purlins plus an additional length where screw
can be placed
