Main Ideas and Supporting details

Lesson Objectives: References:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. demonstrate the ability of analyzing main ideas and
supporting details in college-level reading material;
2. self-evaluate needs in reading comprehension skills.

Productivity Tip: To preserve the energy of your eyes, try to read your modules at least 15 to 25 inches away from
your eyes. Your gadgets should be 20-28 inches from the eye and about 4 or 5 inches below eye level.

INTRODUCTION
A good paragraph must have a clear main idea, strong related evidence, cohesive
sentences, and must be free from irrelevant sentences. Today, you will improve your skills in
identifying main ideas, supporting details, and irrelevant sentences.

A. LESSON REVIEW/PREVIEW
Activity #1: Which one of these things DOES NOT belong to the group “Man’s Basic Needs”?
Answer: _________________

C D
A B

If you answered, C – motorcycle, then you are correct. Though having a motorcycle, bicycle,
or car can be useful as a means of transportation, vehicles are not necessary for man to survive.
Much like in paragraphs, there are some sentences in a paragraph that are not necessary –
irrelevant.

B. DEVELOPING THE SKILL

Activity #2: Content Notes Read the concept notes pre-printed below. While reading, highlight
key information found in the text.

Irrelevant sentences are those that do not support the main idea of the paragraph. They
distract readers and upset the flow of the passages. Therefore, it is important to identify them and
omit them. Take a look at this example below:

1
I have a trained dog named Boots. 2I taught him lots of tricks.
3
When I tell him to, Boots will sit or lie down. 4Our cat Kitty envy Boots. 5Boots
can also wave his paw to greet people. 6When I say, “Dance, Boots”, he will
stand up on two legs and walk. 7I don't know of many dogs that can do such
amazing tricks.

You will notice that sentence 4 is irrelevant because it does not support the main idea that
the dog is a well- trained dog. Hence, sentence 4 should be deleted. You will find this skill
necessary when you edit your outputs in the future.

Activity #3: Check for Understanding

The sentences below contain numbers that correspond to the main idea and the irrelevant
sentences. Identify the main idea and irrelevant sentences by writing the number on the blank
provided.

1
1. The longest-lived creature in the insect world is the queen termite ant. 2She has been known
to live for over 50 years. 3During that time, the queen can lay over 30,000 eggs each day. 4So in
her 50 years of life, it is possible for her to give birth to half a billion children. 5Some termite
hills can be over six meters high.

2. For many years, all books were written by hand. 2Because it took so long to write one book,
there were only a few of them. 3Most people could never own a book. 4Then sometime
between 1450 and 1460, Johannes Gutenberg got the idea of carving separate letters and
moving them to make new words. 5Gutenberg died at the age of 68.6This was the invention of
the moveable type. 7From then on, the number of books printed grew quickly.
