Question 2

2.1 Number of checkouts provided by the old system in a shift

Number of checkouts per lane per hour = 3 600 sec x 1 checkout/45 sec

= 80 checkouts per hour per lane

Total number of checkouts using the old system

= 2 lanes x 80 checkouts x 8 hrs

= 1 280 checkouts

2.2 Number of checkouts provided by the new system

Number of checkouts per hour per lane = 3 600 seconds x 1 checkout/120

sec

= 30 checkouts per lane per hour.

The total number of checkouts provided by the new system:

= 4 lanes x 30 checkouts per hour x 8 hours

= 960 checkouts

2.3 The multifactor productivity for each system

¿
Multifactor productivity ¿ Output ¿ the operation All inputs

For the old system

Labour cost = 4 staff x 8 hours/shift x R10/hour = R320

Material cost = 1 280 x R0.10 = R128

Electricity cost = 1 280 x R0.05 = R64

1280 checkouts
Multifactor productivity =
R 320+ R 128+ R 64+ R 100
1280
=
512
= 2.5 checkouts per rand
For the new system

Labour cost = 1 cashier x 8 hours x R10/hour = R80

Material cost = 960 checkouts x R0.15 per checkout = R144

Electricity cost = 960 checkouts x R0.05 per checkout = R48

Capital costs = R100

960 checkouts
Multifactor productivity =
R 80+ R 144+ R 48+ R 100

960
=
372

= 2.58 checkouts per rand
