Fixing Run-On Sentences

A run-on sentence happens when you have two or more complete thoughts (“independent clauses”)
joined without something to connect them. An example of a run-on sentence is:

I love tacos I’m going to have some for dinner tonight.

“I love tacos” and “I’m going to have some for dinner tonight” are each complete thoughts. We need
to separate them in order for our sentence to be correct.

There are three ways to correct a run-on sentence.

Method #1: Use a period to turn the run-on into two sentences
Example: I love tacos. I’m going to have some for dinner tonight.

Method #2: Use a comma and a conjunction to separate the clauses

Example: I love tacos, so I’m going to have some for dinner tonight.
Note: you MUST use a conjunction (and, so, but, however, etc) with your comma or else you will make a
new error called a comma splice.

Method #3: Use a semi-colon to separate the clauses

Example: I love tacos; I’m going to have some for dinner tonight.

Correct the following run-on sentences by adding a semi-colon:

1) When I grow up I want to be a doctor I love that doctors get to help people.

2) Tia ran a marathon she absolutely loved it

3) It was wonderful weather on Monday the boy went outside to fly his kite.

4) Green is my favourite colour I also like yellow.

5) I really like Moussa he seems like such a nice guy.

6) I slipped on the ice I ripped my jeans and cut my knee.

7) There’s someone at the door could you answer it please?

Read the paragraph below and correct the run-ons you find using any of the three
methods you’d learned.

I had a great day yesterday! First I woke up early then I made a delicious breakfast of

pancakes and orange juice. After that I went to visit my friend he lives around the corner

from me we played video games and went to the park. We ran into our other friend at the

park we decided to all go to the beach. The weather at the beach was great! We got ice

cream and hot dogs after that we went swimming. Finally, it was time to go home. I was

happy to have such a fun day with my friends I hope they thought so too!
