JCB Product Information - Comparative Evaluation
• Opening of front window well designed and easy to use. The bottom window is integral with the top window. (Not stowed separate).
• None of the ZX 20 tonne class machines come anywhere near the lifting performance of the JS220LC. Comparing the JS220LC and
ZX210LC, lifting over the front the JS220LC has 19% more lift capacity and 24% more over the side.
• Hitachi offer reduced (Not zero) tail swing machines – ZX225USR / ZX225US, and they have some obvious advantages. However in many
instances the advantages are out-weighed by the disadvantages i.e. poor vision, poor service access, increased operating weight, and
reduced performance etc. The JS220LC has a 76% advantage on the ZX225USLC when lifting over the front and 17.8% over the side.
• Cushion control is standard providing a smoother operation, and can be switched off when necessary i.e. for lifting duties, working in
sticky conditions etc. Used in the right situations, cushion control protects the customer’s investment.
• Superior hydraulic filtration system. The Plexus and hyd leakage line filters are standard on the JS machines. Cleaner oil breed’s reliability.
• Sealed and greased track chain with 1000 hour tracking warranty.
• The standard undercarriage is a heavy-duty construction compared to the ZX machines. The JS220L is over 2 tonne heavier than the
ZX210LC and the JS undercarriage accounts for a large proportion of the extra weight.
• The JS machines (JS200,210 &220) have 19.7% more bucket tearout than the ZX210, 225USR & 225US machines.
• With a short dipper fitted the JS has 4% more breakout force. With the medium dipper the ZX (ZX210 only) has 3% more than the
JS220 and with the long dipper fitted, all the JCB and Hitachi machines are equal to each other.
• JCB offer both the JS200 and JS220 with a narrow carriage i.e. less than 2.55m overall width. The ZX210N has a dedicated
superstructure to comply with the width restrictions. The ZX210S and ZX210LC superstructure is wider than 2.55m.
• To improve the ZX machines relatively poor lifting performance, Hitachi offer an optional 1000kg extra counterweight on the ZX210.
• The JS Auto has 8.6% higher excavating output (tonnes per hour).
• Lower fuel consumption, 11% more efficient than the Hitachi (litres per tonne).

JCB Product Information - Comparative Evaluation
JCB Vs Hitachi
JSVHITARGE
The following comparison is designed to give JCB and it’s
distribution network an understanding of the Zaxis excavators.
The Hitachi Zaxis machines are excellent and have a good
reputation in the market. However, development of the new
JS Auto range has given the machine many visual and functional
advantages when compared directly to the Zaxis machine.
The table below shows the operating weight, the weight of the
04/03 JSVHITA
counter weight and track gauge etc. This will help to establish the
direct competitor to the relevant JS Auto machine.
Note, the track gauge for JS NC and ZX210N is 1990mm. The ZX210N is the only model being offered with a maximum width of
less than 2.55m.

3
JCB Product Information - Comparative Evaluation
To compete with the JS210LC Hitachi offer a 2200mm track gauge on their ZX210, ZX225US and ZX225USR. Note the ZX225USR has
a reduced tail swing (1990mm) and the ZX225US has a further reduced tail swing (1680mm).
The JS220, ZX210 and ZX225USR all have a similar minimum swing radius i.e. around 3600mm / 3700mm.
Hitachi nomenclature that finishes with a K (K Series) indicates that it is designed for demolition. JCB offer the JS220LC XD for demolition etc.
Machine Comparison
The following detail is specific to the JS220L Auto versus Hitachi Zaxis 210LC. However many of the comparisons are reflected
throughout the JS Auto and ZX range. The undercarriage options and the weight of the counter weight are probably the most significant
items that change when comparing the JS200, JS210 & JS220 machines. We should also note that the machine being marketed in Europe
is a ZX210 as opposed to a ZX200. Fundamentally both the ZX200 / ZX210 are the same machine i.e. hydraulics, engine, structures etc.
The results in this comparison are generally focused on the ZX210LC.

Both the JCB and Hitachi produce excellent quality cabins. The difference between the two cabins is the JS has a larger cabin, hence more
room for the European size operator, better all-round visibility, controls and switches designed for simplicity and function. It is modern and
particular attention has been given to the operator’s needs i.e. mobile telephone holder / charger, large storage box, increased ventilation

PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW
To test the Hitachi’s excavating performance against the JCB, a production test was carried out. Prior to testing, tractive effort, dipper and
bucket tearout were confirmed.
This was done by excavating a trench at one bucket depth. The spoil from this trench was used to fill a JCB dumper truck. The excavator
had to slew 90o from the trench to the truck. The truck was always filled with 4-bucket loads. This spoil was then weighed to give a figure
of the output. Both the Hitachi and JCB repeated the test until the results were consistent. Both machines were wired up with fuel
consumption meters and the loading cycle of the dump truck was timed.
JSVHITA0047 JSVHITA0048
• The JS220 L is 11% more fuel efficient per tonne of spoil moved.
Lifting Test
No actual lifting tests were done with the ZX machine. However comparing the lift charts in the relevant brochure, the JS machines are
in a class above the Hitachi machines. Zero or reduced tail swing are shown to be restricted when it comes to heavy lifting duties.
The following specification chart shows JS machines clear advantage and in the summary it ‘s shown in percentage terms.
