A Prayer For When You Feel You’ve Lost Your Way

Dear God,
I’m spiralling. I’m floating. I’m spinning. I’m losing sight of you and your love in my life. I keep
trying to stay focused on the person I’m supposed to be, the person you’ve created me to be, but
right now I just feel so lost.
I need your help.
I don’t know when this all began—the feeling of separation from you, the fear, the exhaustion,
the struggle to just get out of bed in the morning, the hopelessness when it comes to my purpose,
my place in the universe. I used to be so put together. I used to get up and feel like I was on top
of the world. I used to exude confidence, self-assurance, and security because I knew I was on
the right track.
I used to feel your presence in my every movement; I was so determined, maybe even a little
prideful because I felt like I was doing all I was supposed to be doing.
And now I’m just sitting here, staring out the window, wondering how to conjure up those
feelings again, wondering if I’m too far gone for you to bring me back to you.
But that’s silly, isn’t it? Silly for me to doubt in the moment I need you the most. Silly to think
that for a second you’d abandon me, even though my existence is so small in the big scheme of
things. Because you haven’t. Because you won’t.
You’ve been here for me, countless times before. Every moment I questioned your presence, you
brought something into my life that showed me I was never alone. Every second I found myself
slipping, you put your arms around me and pulled me back into your grace.
So why is it that now I’m doubting again?
God, I need a reminder of who I am and where I’m going. I need a reminder of who you are and
have always been. I need a reminder of the powerful, loving Savior I serve and the incredible
things He’s forever doing in the lives of those who follow Him.
I know I’m being foolish, letting my human insecurities and fears cloud my mind. I know I’m
being foolish, thinking that I’m so far away from your light I won’t be able to find my way back.
I know I’m being foolish, thinking that you don’t love me or that I’m lost and will never be
found.
It’s just so hard when the rest of the world keeps spinning—no matter what I try to do, I always
feel three steps behind.
But you remind me that what the rest of the world is doing is not of my concern. I don’t need to
measure up, to fit, to be ‘on track’ by human standards; I need to be right where you want me to
be. I am right where you want me to be. And I need to trust that you’re in control, leading me
through this season of doubt.
I need to trust that you are my God, and no matter what I’m feeling on the inside, no matter
what’s happening around me, no matter how hopeless or lost I feel, you’re here with me. And
you’re not going anywhere.
So please calm my heart. Give me deep breaths and clear thoughts. When I start to worry, remind
me of your word. When I start to question, show me answers and the will to keep moving, even
if I feel at a standstill.
Bring me light when I’m in darkness and a path to follow when I feel like I’m wandering in
circles. When doors close in front of me, give me new ones to open. When people walk away,
give me the courage to seek out relationships that both build me and honour you.
When I don’t know who I am anymore, tell me that I am yours.
And in this crazy world, that’s all I want to be.
Please remind me, each time that I forget.

Amen.
Lord, you are God Almighty, maker of Heaven and Earth. I know this to be true. You are the
Author of my days, my hours, my minutes, my seconds. You know the number of hairs on my
head.[1]
You are all-knowing, all-seeing, all-hearing, all-saving. You number the stars and call them each
by name,[2]
Yet you invite me to bring my every care to you.[3]
By your breath, you called all things into existence, and it was your Word that breathed life into
my dead soul. Like Job, I first heard of you and my eyes have also seen you.[4]
You have done miraculous things in my life for your glory and my specific good. Forgive me for
allowing the memory of those works to fade. Forgive me for questioning your desire to do good
after what I have seen and known of your goodness. Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.[5]
I am ashamed of how faithless I still seem to be. Forgive me for worshipping at the altar of fear
instead of the altar of faith. I know every letter of your Word to be true, But my wayward heart
still seeks comfort in lesser things. My sin makes me feel like I am still your enemy, an object of
your wrath.[6]
It makes me doubt the promises of your Word are true for me. Remind me of my salvation.
Remind me that though I fall short, I have been justified by your grace through Jesus.[7]
Remind me that I have been born again into an imperishable, undefiled, unfading inheritance.[8]
Lord, make my mouth gape again at the wonder of who you are. Make me tremble at your awful
righteousness, But make me rejoice that you are slow to anger and full of mercy.[9]
Teach me that you are a God who is love and has wrath; You are not a God who is wrath but can
love. Teach me to believe that you are not slow to fulfil your promises. What I see as slowness is
your great patience toward me and others.[10]
Teach me not to allow what I see and experience to determine my faith. Teach me what it means
to walk by faith instead of sight.[11]
Lord, create in me an utter disgust toward sin. Help me to seek the way out of temptation that
you promise to provide.[12]
And on my best days, reminds me that my most righteous acts are as filthy rags.[13]
Indwell me with a spirit that is ever dependent on and ever thankful for the cross. Teach me to
pray in submission to your good and perfect will. And teach me to trust that your answers cannot
be anything other than perfect. Circumcise my heart so that I will love you with all of it and my
soul. Hold me fast to the life that promise brings.[14] In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer for Deliverance
Father, you have heard our hearts’ desire for this prayer, and I want to begin by praising you as a
perfectly holy, transcendentally pure, high, lifted up, above all temptation and all sin and all
limitations kind of God that you are. I praise you as an infinite God of knowledge and infinite in
power and infinite in goodness.
We don’t come to you because you need us. You don’t need us. You are “not served by human
hands” as though you “needed anything,” but you give “to all mankind life and breath and
everything” (Acts 17:25) including this prayer right now. You are the fountain, and we are
thirsty. You are the bread, and we are hungry. You are the wisdom, and we are the foolish ones.
You are strong, and we are weak and needy. You are righteous; we are guilty. And you are the
treasure we long for, and we are bankrupt and poor. That is the way we come. We take refuge in
our grace, in your righteousness, in your Son.
“It is not because we are worthy of answers, but because Christ is worthy of answers.”
We don’t ask anything because of our merit. Nobody listening to this, I hope, God, don’t let
them ask anything because of their merit or their performance. It is not because we are worthy of
answers, but because Christ is worthy of answers, and we are in Christ. That is what we mean.
That is what we mean, Father, when we say we are coming in his name.
So for his sake, because of his blood, because of his righteousness, Father, and for his glory we
are asking now, Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage to the besetting sins of our lives. Look
upon the chains that have held us so long. Have mercy on us, not because we are guiltless, but
because Christ died so that we might walk in the power of the Spirit. He bought the new
covenant promises for us. It grieves us, O God, that we are so slow to live in the freedom that he
purchased, to be the people you have created us to be. And we are sorry, and we confess that we
have grieved your Spirit by the slowness of our hearts.
Open the eyes of our hearts to see and to savor at new and powerful levels the beauty of holiness
and purity and patience and meekness and forbearance — the beauty of Christ. Break our
addiction to worldly pleasures and sinful responses to people like wives or husbands or children
who frustrate us. Break our worldly responses of anger or lust or greed. We are tired of being
jerked around by the impulses of lust and anger and covetousness. We want to be free by the
power of a new, explosive satisfaction in you.
Oh, sweeten our souls with grace. Make us “quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James
1:19), ready to forgive as we have been forgiven (see Ephesians 4:32) and eager to make peace
by being wronged if necessary. Help us not to have to have the last word in any kind of dispute.
Give us, O God, the fruit of self-control. You said it is the fruit of the Spirit (see Galatians 5:22–
23). Give us the fruit of self-denial where our appetites for food and sex control us. Don’t let
them control us anymore. We hate being enslaved by anything or anyone but Christ.
Deliver us for your name’s sake. Save us for your name’s sake. Fill us with all conquering joy
for your name’s sake, I pray in Jesus’s name. Amen.
