II. Define:

1) Camouflage:
The structural adaptation that enables animals to blend with their
surroundings and allow them to hide from predators is called camouflage.

2) Moulting:
Shedding the skin to acquire new one is called moulting.
For ex: Snakes shed their skin periodically and these are replaced by the
new skin.

3) Proboscis
A long, thin tube found in insects used to suck nectar or blood is called
proboscis.
III. Answer the following:

1) List the special features present in birds that help them to fly.
Ans: Birds have special features such as:-
❖ A streamlined body.
❖ Feathers to fly and keep the body warm.
❖ Forelimbs modified into wings to fly.
❖ Hollow bones to make the body light.
❖ Strong chest muscles to provide energy while flying.
❖ A tail to change directions while flying.

2) What is migration? Why do animals migrate? Give suitable example.

Ans: The large-scale movement of animals from one place to another and
back to their home is called migration. Animals need to migrate in search
of food, favourable climate conditions and to find a suitable place to give
birth to their young ones.
For ex: African antelopes migrate in large numbers to escape the drought
during summer season.

3) Explain the breathing process in birds, reptiles and mammals.

Ans:
❖ The respiratory system in birds, reptiles and mammals consists of
nose, windpipe and lungs.
❖ Exchange of gases takes place in the lungs, where oxygen is
absorbed by the blood by a special substance called haemoglobin.
❖ Carbon-dioxide from the blood is released into the air through the
nostrils.

4) Draw a mind map showing the organs used by different animals for
breathing.
5) Explain why do the following animals migrate(Homework)
a. Salmons b. Caribou

a. Salmons: Salmons live in the sea. They migrate because they have
to reach the rivers to lay eggs. They die there and the young ones
swim back to the sea.

b. Caribou: The Caribou lives in the Arctic region. They migrate to the
south to avoid harsh winter season
6) Mention the different body coverings seen in animals with the help of a
flowchart.

7) Explain the role of blowholes in whales and dolphins.
Ans: Whales and dolphins are mammals which live in water. They
breathe through lungs. The blowhole helps to take in oxygen and
carbon-dioxide is given out along with water.

IV. Give reasons:

1) Haemoglobin is an essential substance present in blood

Ans: Blood has special substance called haemoglobin which
contains iron that carries oxygen to all parts of the body.

2) Human beings and apes have a unique grip and use their hands for many
purposes…
Ans: Human beings and apes have an opposable thumb. It moves
in the opposite direction of the rest of the fingers. Thus,
providing unique grip and the ability to do many kind of work.
