Workshop #4 (15 pts) University Chemistry 1

Dr. Villeneuve

1) A 60.0 mL sample of 0.500 M Ca(OH)2 is added to 100.0 mL of 0.500 M HNO3.

a) Write the net ionic equation.

b) Is the resulting solution acidic, neutral, or basic?

c) How many moles of excess acid or base are present?

d) How many milliliters of 0.0500 M Ca(OH)2 or 0.0500 M HNO3 would be

required to neutralize the solution left after mixing?

2) Acetylsalicylic acid is the active ingredient in aspirin. It took 23.45 mL of 0.3377 M NaOH to react completely
with 1.427 g of acetylsalicylic acid. Acetylsalicylic acid has one acidic hydrogen, H+. What is the molar
mass of acetylsalicylic acid?
3) Infrared lamps are used in cafeterias to keep food warm. How many photons per second are produced by
an infrared lamp that consumes energy at the rate of 95 W and is 14% efficient in converting this energy
to infrared radiation? Assume that the radiation has a wavelength of 1525 nm.
