Activity 2
Abstraction
By answering the following guide questions, write a reflection paper about the relevance of
Rizal’s nationalism to the present political problems of the country explaining the following
guide questions:

1. Is Rizal’s nationalist ideal still applicable to the Philippine situation today?

Explain yes or why not?

Yes, I personally consider it to be applicable. Many Filipinos still have some

nationalist ideals, and I admire them for that for it shows great concern for others
and not only for themselves. Even today, people are inspiring others to give utmost
importance to the well-being of the lower classes of the country. With the aid of
social media, more people have gained sympathy and understanding of the
circumstances of the oppressed, and has led them to offer support and help for
those in need, who are our fellow countrymen.
.
2. Like Rizal during the 19th century, what would you do today to address our country’s
problem on corruption and abuse of power?

I consider ourselves fortunate enough to be born in a world where communication

and the spread of information is prominent and convenient. Technology has
introduced to us the actualization of the concept of social networking, where most
people can gain access to any form of information. That said, people may still be
susceptible to fake information and news. Like Rizal, through his aptitude in
writing and disseminating information through it, I would do similar things. I may
not be that good of a writer but I can still be a tool for disseminating factual
information as well as informing others of malicious and fake ones. This would
help keep the people I’m connected with to be more vigilant about current events,
especially with the involvement of politics, where the problem of corruption and
abuse of power mostly strive. ..

B. Prove or contradict the following statements.

1-5 The Friars were the true conquerors of the Philippines and the real representative of the
Spanish Crown in the colony.

The Friars did held great influence economically, as well as politically. They
acted out initially as carriers of Western culture, education, and even built hospitals
and universities for the Filipino people. Friar lands were initially granted to them,
thus making them land owners and later on merchants. As the friars become
powerful, abuses among the Filipinos took place. The issue about the friar lands
became one of the reasons for the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution. They
reigned supreme even in government matters. It was at that time that they the most
control over a myriad of aspects in the nation, thus making them the true
conquerors in the colony.

6-10 The distance of the Philippines from Spain encouraged inefficiency and corruption in
government.
The geographical distance of Spain and the Philippines did breed political
inefficiency. The Spaniards, or the people sent to 'influence' Filipinos were left not
thoroughly scrutinized or supervised. That said, those people tasked to guide and
improve Filipino society from Spain eventually gave in to temptations of
corruption. The Filipinos who were supposed to be supported were instead abused,
hurt, and discriminated. Basically, this led to the abuse of power and in turn, a
revolution. .
