correlation.
Rank in Statistics 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Rank in Mathematics 2 4 1 5 3 8 7 6
3. Find the regression lines for the following data.
x 0 1 2 3 4
y 2 3 5 4 6
x 1 2 3 4 5
y 5 2 4.5 8 12.5
6. Write about
(i) Null Hypothesis
(ii) Alternative Hypothesis
(iii) Type I and Type II error
(iv) Two-tailed test
(v) One-tailed test
7. In a random sample of 60 workers, the average time taken by them to get to work is
33.8 minutes with a standard deviation of 6.1 minutes. Can we reject the null hypothesis
𝜇 =32.6 minutes in favor of alternative hypothesis μ>32.6 at 𝛼 = 0.025 level of
significance?
8. A sample of 900 members has a mean 3.4 cms and S.D 2.61 cms. Is the sample drawn
from a large population of mean 3.25 cms and S.D 2.61 cms. 5% level of significance.
10. The means of two large samples of 1000 and 2000 items are 67.5 cms and 68.0cms
respectively. Can the samples be regarded as drawn from the population with standard
deviation 2.5 cms. Test at 5% level of significance.
11. In a sample of 1000 people in a karnataka 540 are rice eaters and the rest are wheat
eaters. Can we assume that both rice and wheat eaters are equally popular in this state
at 1% level of significance? (table value=2.58).
12. A person throws a dice 9000 times and of these 3220 yielded a 3 or 4. Can you conclude
the dice is unbiased one at 5%?
13. In two large populations there are 30% and 20% respectively of fair-haired people. In
this difference likely to be hidden in samples of 1200 and 900 respectively from the
two populations.
14. A random sample of 10 boys had the following IQs: 70, 120, 110,101, 88, 83, 95, 98,
107 and 100.
(a) Do these data support the assumption of a population mean I.Q of the students is
100
(b) Find a reasonable range in which most of the mean I.Q. values of samples of 10
boys lie.
15. The heights of 10 males of a given locality are found to be 70,67,62,68,61,68,70,64,64,66
inches. Is it reasonable to believe that the average height is greater than 64 inches? Test
at 5% significance level assuming that for 9 degrees of freedom (t >1.833) at 𝛼 = 0.05
16. Explain the properties of Chi square –test and F- test
17. A group of 5 patients treated with medicine. A is of weight 42, 39, 38, 60 & 41 kgs.
Second group of 7 patients from the same hospital treated with medicine B is of weight
38, 42, 56, 64, 68, 69 & 62 kgs. Find whether there is any difference between
medicines? (t table value at 5% level = 2.228)
18. In certain food experiment to compare two types of baby foods A and B, the following
results of increase in weight (lbs) we observed in 8 children as follows.
A 49 53 51 52 47 50 52 53
B 52 55 52 53 50 54 54 53
Examine the significance of increase in weight of children due to food B. (t table value at
5% level = 2.365)
19. Nadir is testing an octahedral die to see if it is biased. The results are given in the table
below.
Score 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Frequency 7 10 11 9 12 10 14 7
Test the hypothesis that the die is fair. (ꭓ2 table value at 5% level = 14.067)
20. A company has the head office at Kolkata and a branch at Mumbai. The personnel director
wanted to know if the workers at the two places would like the introduction of a new plan
of work and a survey was conducted for this purpose. Out of a sample of 500 workers at
Kolkata 62% favoured the new plan. At Mumbai out of a sample of 400 workers 41% were
against the new plan. Is there any significant difference between the two groups in their
attitude towards the new plan at 5% level? (Z table value at 5% level = 1.96)
21. The average hourly wage of a sample of 150 workers in a plant A was Rs. 2.56 with a
standard deviation of Rs. 1.08. The average hourly wage of a sample of 200 workers in
plant B was Rs. 2.87 with a standard deviation of Rs. 1.28. Can an applicant safely assume
