Gautam Adani
Born: 24 June 1962 (age 61 years)
The great entrepreneur was born into a Bania family in Ahmedabad, Gujarat
to Shanta and Shantilal Adani. His family was involved in the textiles business
which he had no interest in.
The ambitious young man with entrepreneurial traits since his early life
dropped out of his college in his second year of pursuing commerce and
moved to the city of dreams - Mumbai from his native place to try out his
fortune.
There he worked as a diamond sorter at Mahindra Brothers for 2-3 years and
gained knowledge of the nitty-gritty of the business and the market behaviour.
A rising entrepreneur:-
He with the inherited business acumen and the gained job experience first started
with diamond brokering and by the time he turned 20, he had achieved great
success within years making him a millionaire.
He then returned to his hometown to the desire of his brother to assist him with
his small plastics factory. After joining the firm he began commodity trading by
importing polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a prime raw material in manufacturing plastic to
India. He visited South Korea too in order to make a deal for importing PVC. This
event noticed his entry into the global trade arena.
The Shining entrepreneur then set up his own firm Adani Exports Limited (now
known as Adani Enterprises Ltd.) in 1988, which became the flagship company of
the Adani Group. The company initially dealt in the export and import of
commodities and then unfurled by expanding into coal mining, ports, power
generation, edible oil & transmission, gas distribution, Agri infrastructure, and
other ventures.
The element distinguishing a successful person from the mass is the ability to
foresee and grab the opportunity. Adani being a clear example of such a
personality seized the opportunities during India’s post-reform period and
considering the shift in the new market diversified quickly to grab the new market
which proved to be a great decision for him.
Gautam Adani is an Indian business tycoon and the Chairman of the Adani
Group. According to Forbes, he has a current net worth of $11.7 billion. He was
ranked 24th on the Global Rich List in 2020 and was named by Forbes as India’s
sixth-richest person in 2019.
Adani began his career as a commodity trader for textile makers and moved on
to create his own company, Adani Enterprises Limited, in 1988. Since then, he
has grown his business empire to incorporate many different fields from trading
to finance, real estate, ports and logistics solutions across five continents.
