Learning Unit 1 - Using Computers and Operating Systems Including
Web Browsers

Introduction

Having Introduction to Personal Computing as one of the modules in your qualification should prove to
be quite significant. In this learning unit we identify the basic components of a personal computer,
explore the purpose and functioning of an Operating System and learn more about the Internet – how
to navigate it, what online security entails and the value of the Internet to find information and to
communicate with others.

On completion of this learning unit, you should be able to:

• Identify the basic elements of a personal computer;

• Identify input, output and storage devices;

• Examine personal computer functionality;

• Use common tools and programs;

• Manage folders and files;

• Browse and manage websites;


• Acquire information from the web.

Learning Unit 2 - Word Processing

Introduction

In this learning unit we discover and learn more about how to use a word proce ssor starting with the
basics. You will be expected to edit and format a word document as well as to insert a table with at
least five rows, more than two columns and a header row.

Learning Unit Objectives:

On completion of this learning unit, you should be able to:

• Identify the components of the word interface;

• Display a document in different views;


• Edit text and spell check;

• Modify the appearance of text (formatting);

• Insert a simple table with at least five rows, two columns and a header row.

• Insert a graphic or picture into the text;

Learning Unit 3 - Spreadsheets

Introduction

In this learning unit, you will learn how spreadsheets are used. You will be shown how to format and
edit spreadsheets as well as to manipulate data in a spreadsheet. This may possibly be the most
difficult learning unit that you need to cover, but the benefits of being able to use a spreadsheet are
countless.

• Identify the elements of a spreadsheet;

• Modify worksheets;

• Create formulae;

• Insert formulae or functions;

• Reapply formulae;
• Modify the appearance of a worksheet.

Learning Unit 4 - Presentations

Introduction

• Create a presentation;

• Add slides to a presentation;

Learning Unit 5 - E-Mail Applications

Introduction
