Coding Decoding Olympiads Key Points fb75h5

The document discusses different types of coding and decoding techniques used to transmit information securely. It describes coding as replacing letters, words or sentences with codes that hide the actual meaning from others except the intended recipient. Decoding is the process of deriving the actual meaning from coded text. Specific coding methods covered include letter coding by replacing alphabets, number/symbol coding by assigning numerical codes, substitution coding using replacement words, and deciphering coded messages.

CODING

DECODING

Key
Points

Coding-decoding is process of transmitting an

information from one place to other place using some
suitable codes, so that it might reach to other person
safely. Coding decoding of an information is done
with various rules or patterns, so that only the right
person can decipher it.

1. CODING
Coding is a process where any letter/ word/
sentence is written or said in such a language which
hides the actual meaning of that particular letter/
word/ sentence from others except the desired
person.
2. DECODING
Decoding is a process which helps in tracing out the
actual meaning of a coded letter/ word/ sentence.

3. LETTER CODING

In this type, the alphabets of original word are

replaced by certain other alphabets according to
a specic rule to form its code. You are required to
detect the common rule and answer the questions
accordingly
e.g.
If GROWN is coded as ABCDE in a certain code
language. How can WRONG be coded in the same
language.
Sol.
As, Similarly,
G R O WN WR O N G

A B C D E D B C E A
4. NUMBER/SYMBOL CODING
In number/symbol coding, numerical code is assigned
to the word or alphabetical letters.
e.g.
If PALAM could be given the code number 43, what
code number can be given to SANTACRUZ ?
Sol.
Pattern is: Sum of position value.
PALAM = P + A + L + A + M
= 16 + 1 + 12 + 1 + 13 = 43
Similarly,
SANTACRUZ = S + A + N + T + A + C + R + U + Z
= 19 + 1 + 14 + 20 + 1 + 3 + 18 + 21 + 26
= 123
5. SUBSTITUTION CODING
Coding by substitution / word replacement- In this type
of coding, a confusing code is provided by giving a
different name for the words.
e.g.
If 'diamond' is called 'gold', 'gold' is called 'silver',
'silver is called' ruby and ruby is called 'emerald', which
is golden yellow metal ?
Sol.
Golden yellow Metal is gold here gold is called silver.

6. DECIPHERING MESSAGE CODES

In this type of coding, some messages are provided in
the code language and some codes are assigned to
each word of the messages.
e.g.
In a code language 'mu kay cit' means 'very lucky
person' and 'dis hu mu' means 'fortunate and lucky'.
Which is the word in that language for 'lucky'?
Sol.
In both the sentences, common word is 'mu' and common
code is 'lucky'. Hence, 'mu' stands for 'lucky'.
