Lab2 2

This document discusses using Scilab to model and simulate the behavior of a parallel RLC circuit over time. Equations are derived and solved in Scilab to analyze the circuit's response. The output shows the capacitor voltage exhibits a critically damped response, reaching equilibrium smoothly without oscillations. Mathematical modeling and computational tools help analyze complex circuit dynamics important for engineering.

This study explores how mathematical models help in designing and analyzing control systems,
focusing on electrical systems. Using Scilab, a computational tool, we investigate a parallel RLC
circuit's behavior, a common electrical system.

We start by understanding the essential role of mathematical models in engineering, especially in

controlling electrical systems. Then, we derive equations describing the circuit's behavior and
analyze its response to different inputs.

Using Scilab, we solve these equations to simulate the circuit's behavior over time, providing visual
insights into voltage changes across the capacitor.

By combining theory with computational analysis, we gain a deeper understanding of electrical

systems and their dynamics, emphasizing the practical utility of mathematical modeling and
computational tools in engineering applications.

I. Exercise 1: 1st Order ODE (Complete Response of an RC Circuit)
The comparison between the SciLab plot of 1st Order ODEand the results obtained from the
2nd Order ODE activity reveals similarities and differences in the behavior of the capacitor voltage.
While both demonstrate voltage changes over time, they represent distinct circuit configurations
and analysis methods. The SciLab plot provides a numerical simulation of the driven RC circuit,
offering a visual representation of voltage dynamics based on the differential equation. In contrast,
the 2nd order ODE activity yields an analytical solution specific to the RLC circuit, capturing
resonance effects and transient responses.

The plot generated by the code illustrates the critically damped response of the circuit. Unlike
overdamped or underdamped responses, critically damped systems exhibit a smooth and rapid
return to equilibrium without oscillations. This characteristic is evident in the plot's shape, where
the capacitor voltage quickly reaches its steady-state value without any oscillatory behavior.

Analyzing the plot provides valuable insights into how the circuit responds to the input voltage and
how its behavior evolves over time. Understanding the critically damped response is essential for
designing and analyzing parallel RLC circuits in various engineering applications, ensuring stable
and controlled operation.

In this activity, we investigated the behavior of a parallel RLC circuit with a single equivalent
resistor. By simulating the circuit's response using Scilab, we analyzed the capacitor voltage over
time. The circuit exhibited a critically damped response, characterized by a smooth and rapid return
to equilibrium without oscillations. This behavior is crucial in practical applications, as it ensures
stable and controlled operation of the circuit without overshooting or oscillatory behavior. Through
this analysis, we gained insights into the transient response of the parallel RLC circuit and the
significance of damping in electrical systems. This activity demonstrates the effectiveness of
mathematical modeling and computational tools like Scilab in analyzing and understanding
complex circuit dynamics, which are fundamental in engineering design and analysis.
