PALM / PASSION SUNDAY

24th MARCH, 2024

Introduction: Today we enter the sixth week of Lent to begin our holy week observances in
union with the whole Church throughout the world to celebrate Passion Sunday. We see how
Jesus emptied himself for the sake of whole human race and he was humiliated until death,
but even in the midst of his sufferings Jesus offers forgiveness. It is a time to unite ourselves
closely with Jesus in His suffering and death, so that we too may approach the reality of trials
and suffering with a total surrender to God’s will and thus rise with Him to the newness of
Life.

(ONLY FOR THE MAIN MASS AT 8AM MASS AT WHICH PALMS ARE
BLESSED)

Commentary: In the first part of the service, we remember the entrance of Jesus into
Jerusalem acclaimed by the all the people. It is a ceremony of the ancient East where the
newly crowned King used to be taken in procession to his throne. During the second part,
inside the Church, we shall remember Jesus’ Passion and death both in the readings and in the
celebration of the Eucharist. Our procession will end up in the Church, which represents
Jerusalem.

We shall now have the blessing of the palms.

BLESSING OF PALMS

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD OF GOD:

Narrator: Let us now prepare ourselves not only to listen to God’s word but also to be
willing to live the same in our daily lives by sharing His love and Mercy with all.

BEFORE THE PROCESSION

Narrator: We now move in procession to the Church thanking Jesus for walking the road to
Calvary for us and we are going to acclaim Him as our King, the king of our families, of our
zones and of each one of us.

INSIDE THE CHURCH

Narrator: The journey to Calvary is a reminder that no sin is greater than His love and mercy
for us. Bearing this in mind let us now focus on the readings which reflect Christ’s passion
and death. Jesus was a selfless leader of His people and we see today how he begins His final
league of the journey to Calvary on His mission to save the world even to the last drop of His
Blood in total obedience to His Father. In the Liturgical readings, the divinity of Jesus
remains hidden and the suffering servant is manifested in all His pain and misery which has
opened the gates of heaven for us.
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
CELEBRANT: In his tender love for the human race God our Father sent His Son our
Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving
us the example of his great humility. With great faith we present our needs and petitions
before Him.
