The following assumptions are made with regard to the analysis and design performed in
this calculation:
1. This calculation note addresses the design of the concrete foundation supporting the
electric lighting poles only. The design of base plates, anchor bolts and all related
accessories remain as per sign supplier design and recommendations.
2. Structural steel shapes shall conform to ASTM A36/A36M. Fy = 248,000 kN/m2.
3. Anchor bolts material and accessories shall conform to ASTM A307.
4. Concrete cylinder compressive strength, f’c = 25 N/mm2.
5. Reinforcing bars shall conform to ASTM A615/A615M, Grade 60, fy = 420 MPa.
6. Allowable lateral pressure shall be in line with IBC 2006, Chapter 18, Soils and
Foundations, Table 1804.2. The lateral bearing shall be taken equal to 150 psf/ft
below natural grade.

4 LOAD COMBINATIONS
The loads acting on the foundation are the self-weight of the sign, lateral wind forces
and vehicle impact loads on traffic signs.
-D±W
- 0.6 D ± W
5 DESIGN CRITERIA
The loads acting on the foundation are the self-weight of the sign, lateral wind forces and
vehicle impact loads on traffic signs in line with IBC 2006, Chapter 16, Section 1607.7.3.
Dead Load, D:
Dead loads comprise the self-weight of the sign, poles and related accessories. These will be
conservatively neglected in the design.
Vehicle Incident:
Traffic sign are checked for vehicle impact loads as detailed in section 1607.7.3 of IBC-
2006. The pole is considered constrained at the top by the side walk pavement.
Ultimate lateral load from vehicle incident, F = 26.7 kN at 0.45m from grade level.
Seismic Load:
Lateral load is governed by the wind load since Al Riyadh area is designated as non-
seismic zone. Ss =0.007 g and S1 =0.002 g Per SAES –A-112 Nov 2015.
Wind Load, W:
Design wind pressure is in line with SBC 301-CR- 18, Chapter 29, Section 29.4 for Solid Signs/
Ultimate Basic wind speed = 51 m/s per SBC 301-18 for Risk Category II building in Riyadh.
→ Service wind speed, V = sqrt (512/1.6) = 40.32 → Conservatively, as per document # KSP-
FHJ-INW-CMT-ELE-MAT-0462, use V = 45 m/s.

Where:
▪ Exposure Category C (Section 26-7)
▪ Velocity pressure coefficient Kz = 0.86 (Table 29-2, Exp. C, z=5m)
▪ Velocity pressure coefficient Kz = 0.90 (Table 29-2, Exp. C, z=6m)
▪ Topographic factor, Kzt =1 (Section 26.8.2)
▪ Directionality factor, Kd = 0.85 (Section 26.6)
▪ Importance factor I = 1.0
▪ Service wind speed V = 45 m/s
b. Wind Force:
F = qz * G * Cf * Af (N) (Equation 29-3)
G = 0.85 (Section 26.9)
Cf = 0.9

Total service bending moment = (0.37 * 2.5) + (0.05 * 5.5) = 1.1 kN-m
6 FOUNDATION DESIGN
Case 1: Nonconstrained:
The depth of embedment required to resist the lateral loads where no constraints are
provided at ground surface is given by IBC 2006, Chapter 18, Section 1805.7.2.1, Equation
18-1.

In determining S1, reference is made to IBC 2006, Section 1804.3.1 whereby lateral bearing
values shown in table 1804.2 may be multiplied by 2 for isolated poles not adversely
affected by 12.7mm motion at the ground surface due to short-term lateral loads.
Reference is equally made to Table 1804.2, footnote d, whereby a 33% increase in the
tabulated lateral bearing values is permitted when the alternate load combinations that
include wind are used.
→ S1 = (2 * 1.33 * 150 psf / ft) * 0.157 kPa * (1/3 * 0.9m) = 18.79 kPa.
Unconstrained:
Footing Width, B (m) = 0.60
Diam. or diagonal of footing, b (m) 0.85
Distance to point of load, h (m) 2.62
Applied load, P (kN) 0.42
Allowable lateral soil pressure, S1 18.79
Parameter A = 2.34P/S1b 0.06

Case 2: Constrained:
The footing is also checked as constrained for vehicle incident using constrained condition
as depicted by IBC 2006, Chapter 18, Section 1805.7.2.2, Equations 18-2 or 18-3.
Constrained
Distance to point of load, h (m) 0.45
Applied load, P (kN) Service = U / 1.4 19.07
Allowable lateral soil pressure, S3 56.38
Footing 700mm wide by 700mm long with 900mm embedment, measured from finish grade
level, is satisfactory.
Capacity check:
Maximum bending moment at the top of the footing from the vehicle incident:
Mservice max. = 19.07 kN * (0.45m + 0.10m) = 10.49 kN-m

Therefore, the section did not crack and the footing is adequate as unreinforced.
Conservatively, provide 12T12 vertical bars distributed along the periphery of the
700x700mm foundation tied with 4 layers of 3T10@250mm stirrups.
