A competition application
Win a vacation for two people for a month in the US. Spend a week in New York and
then drive across the country from east to west. For their application for the
competition, we want people to write about their lives for a magazine article about
“Typical Lives.”

My name is Aline Silva and I’m 19 years old. I’m Brazilian and I’m from Rio de Janeiro. Rio
is a beautiful old city and is famous for its beaches. I live in a big house with my parents
and I study at a nearby university. Right now, I am studying English. When I finish, I want
to be a teacher – I love helping children.

From Monday to Friday, I get up at 7:30, take a shower, eat breakfast, and go to class. I
usually go by bus, and it takes thirty minutes to get from my house to the university. On the
bus, I like reading or talking to my friends. On weekends, I get up late and I usually help
my father in his store in the afternoon – he sells souvenirs.

In my free time, I like going to the beach or taking my dog for a walk. I also love traveling.
Last summer, I went on vacation with my best friend. We spent three weeks in July
traveling around Canada. I can speak English, but I can’t speak French. The vacation was
fantastic. We didn’t have a lot of money, so we decided to go camping.

I’m Josh Taylor and I’m 32 years old. I’m from the US. I’m American, but my parents are
Canadian. They live in New York, but I don’t live with them. I live in a small apartment in
downtown Kansas City. It’s a city in the center of the US. I work in a factory. I hate my job,
but the money is good.

I graduated high school when I was 18 and traveled around the world for a year. I visited a
lot of different countries. My favorite country was Japan. I had an amazing time there. I really
liked the food. They eat a lot of fish and vegetables.

In my free time, I like playing soccer and going out with my friends. During the week, I get up
at five-thirty in the morning and leave my apartment at a quarter to seven. When the weather
is good, I ride my bike to work, but when it’s cold I take the bus. I’m always tired in the
morning because I go to bed late. I like playing computer games in the evening. It’s a good
way to relax.

Example: Aline is studying English.

1 Aline wants to be a ______.
2 Aline’s father sells ______ in his store.
3 Aline went on vacation to Canada with her ______.
