An Introduction The student will investigate and analyze linear
families and their characteristics both algebraically
to Functions and graphically, including determining whether a
relation is a function and finding the domain and range of a
function.
Relations
A relation is a set of inputs and outputs, often written as ordered pairs (input, output) for (x, y). We can also
represent a relation as a mapping diagram or a graph. For example, the relation can be represented as:

Functions
A function is a relation in which each input x (also called the domain) has ONLY ONE output y (also called
the range).

In simpler terms, “x’s DON’T repeat” in a function.

{(1, 3), (2, 6), (3, 9), (4, 12)}


• The domain of a relation is a
list of all the x-values (or
inputs) in numerical order.
Function (x’s don’t repeat)
• The range of a relation is a list
Domain: {1, 2, 3, 4} of all the y-values (or outputs)
Function (x’s don’t repeat) Range: {3, 6, 9, 12} in numerical order.
Domain: {−1, 0, 1, 2, 8}
Range: {−3, −2, 2, 3}

To check if a relation is a function, given a mapping diagram of the relation or a graph, use the following
criterion:
1) MAPPING DIAGRAM: If each input (x) has only one line connected to it, then the outputs are a function of
the inputs.
2) GRAPHS: Use the vertical line test.
VERTICAL LINE TEST: To determine whether y is a function of x, if every vertical line you can
draw goes through only 1 point (intersects with the graph once), y is a function of x. If you can
draw a vertical line that goes through 2 or more points, y is NOT a function of x.
State the domain and range of each relation. Then determine if each relation is a function. If not, state why it is not a
function.
