• The expression (Y = y) can be read, the set of all points in S assigned the
value y by the random variable Y .
• The probability that Y takes on the value y, P(Y = y), is defined as the sum
of the probabilities of all sample points in S that are assigned the value y.
We will sometimes denote P(Y = y) by p(y).
