In recent decades, supply chains have emerged as one of the most important elements in the
global economy, spurring national and global economic growth and facilitating inter-national
trade (MacCarthy et al. 2016). The global freight supply chain plays a pivotal role in facilitating
the movement of goods across various stakeholders, including shippers, carriers, freight
forwarders, customs authorities, and other parties (Nakandala et al. 2022). However, this complex
and interconnected network often faces challenges related to transparency, security, and
operational inefficiencies. Blockchain technology has come to the attention of the freight industry,
been gradually applied to the global freight supply chain system and provided the possibility for
breakthrough development in supply chain management. Blockchain is a decentralised and
immutable distributed ledger technology (DLT) that has gained considerable attention for its
ability to enhance transparency, security, and efficiency in different sectors (Thakur, 2022; Singh
et al. 2023). The integration of blockchain technology presents a promising solution to address
these issues and optimise the freight supply chain. This research proposal aims to investigate the
benefits of blockchain integration and propose an optimised framework for its implementation.
This research focuses on the adoption of blockchain technology in the freight supply chain and
expounds on the following primary objectives:
RO1: To identify the key challenges and inefficiencies in the current freight supply chain.
RO2: To explore the potential benefits of integrating blockchain technology into the freight
supply chain.
RO3: To design a robust and efficient blockchain-based system to optimise freight
management and logistics.
8
RO4: To evaluate the performance of the proposed system through real-world simulations and
case studies.
RO5: To provide practical recommendations for the adoption and implementation of
blockchain technology in the freight supply chain.
Thus, this research aims to shed light on blockchain and freight supply chain integration, making
a significant contribution to the literature and having ethical considerations and expected
outcomes for practitioners and decision-makers interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of
this cutting-edge technology.
The literature review summarises the existing research and studies related to both blockchain
technology and the freight supply chain. It will highlight the current challenges faced by the
industry and the potential advantages offered by blockchain, such as enhanced transparency,
immutability, decentralised consensus, and increased security. Furthermore, it will explore past
efforts in integrating blockchain into supply chain management to extract valuable insights for
this research. The summary of the reviewed paper is presented in Table 1.
