Quarter _2__, Week _5_

Describe the exponent and the base in a number expressed in exponential notation.
(M6NS-IIf-146)

Name: _____________________________________________ Grade & Section: _______________________

Teacher: __________________________________________ Date: ____________________________________

LEARN
Example 1. Mang Tasio harvested 2 kg of mangoes on Monday, 4 kg on Tuesday, 8 kg on Wednesday, 16 kg on
Thursday, and so on. If the pattern continues, how many kilograms of mangoes will he harvest on Sunday?

The problem above shows that the weight of mangoes harvested is doubled each day. This can be
expressed into an exponential notation as 27 because the problem is asking for the weight of mangoes that
will be harvested on Sunday which is the seventh day. But how does the expression 27 or two to the
seventh power works?
2 – is called the base - it is used as a factor of itself
7 – is called the exponent - it tells how many times the base is used as a factor
Thus, 27 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 128
Therefore, the answer of the problem is: One hundred twenty-eight kilograms of mangoes will be
harvested on Sunday.

Example 2. In an expression 83, which number represents the base? Which number represents the exponent?
Solution:
In an expression 83,
8 – is called base and it is used as a factor of itself
3 – is called exponent and it tells how many times the base is used as a factor
83 can be written as 8 x 8 x 8 = 512

Example 3. Write 5 x 5 x 5 in exponential notation. Determine the base and the exponent.
Solutions:

a. Write 5 as the base since it is used as a factor.

b. Write 3 as the exponent since five is multiplied by itself three times.
c. 53 – exponential notation
Answer: 53 –exponential notation
5 - base
3 - exponent
53, can be written as 5x5x5 = 125
Therefore, the value of the expression 53 is 125

Example 4. In the expression 10 x 10 x 10 x 10, what is the base and the exponent? Then write its
exponential notation.
Solutions:
a. Write 10 as the base since it is used as a factor.
b. Since 10 is multiplied by itself four times, the exponent is four.
c. The exponential notation for the expression is 10 4 and if we try to evaluate the value of 10 4,
the answer is 10x10x10x10 = 10 000 Therefore, the exponential expression 104 = 10 000
Note: The fourth example is a numerical expression in the powers of 10. Observe that there
are four zeros in 10 000, so 10 is used four times as a factor. The number of zeros indicates
the number of times 10 is used as a factor.

More Examples
Example 1. In the expression 60, determine which number is the base and the exponent.
Solutions:
In the expression 60,
6 – is called the base
0 – is called exponent
Note: Any nonzero number with a zero exponent is equal to 1.
Therefore, exponential expression 60 = 1
Example 2. What number represents the base and the exponent in the exponential expression 4 1?
Solutions:
41is an exponential expression in which; 4 - is called the base
1 - is called exponent
Note: Any number raised to the exponent of 1 is equal to the number itself. So the
expression 41 = 4
Activity 1

Teacher: __________________________________________ Date: ____________________________________

LEARN
Texts are written for a variety of purposes using different forms and standards of composition. These forms of writing
are known as text types.

Factual texts are texts that inform, instruct, or persuade readers about a particular subject and give useful
information based on facts.

Now, let’s take a closer look at these factual text types.

Text Types Purposes Examples
1. Description to give a vivid description of the brochures, character descriptions, biographies
characteristics or features of
something
Example:
On June 19, 1861, José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born in Calamba, in the Philippines' Laguna Province.
A brilliant student who became proficient in multiple languages, José Rizal studied medicine in Manila. In 1882, he traveled to
Spain to complete his medical degree.

2. Discussion/ to argue one side of an argument or debate, letter to the editor, a formal letter of complaint,
Argument discuss both sides of an issue arguing for or against an idea, and discussing issues

Example:
We know that social media apps are very popular. In fact, many Filipinos have social media accounts. While social media facilitate
the creation and sharing of information and ideas and bring people together, we argue that social media also bring negative effects
on our physical, social, mental, and emotional well-being.
3. Persuasion to persuade or sway someone to do an advertisement, a for sale notice, a slogan, a shop sign, a
or believe in something warning

Example:
Try An-C juice, made from pure calamansi juice and honey. Enjoy the fresh and delicious taste as you boost your immunity!
(advertisement of a fruit juice)
4. Procedural to instruct someone on how to do
instructions, recipes, ‘how to’ manuals, user guides, rules,
something or how something was
invitations
done
Example: Ginataang Pinakbet Recipe Steps:
Ingredients: 1. Sauté onions and garlic in coconut oil.

Practice proper waste management at home, in school, and in the community.
(H6CMH-IIh-8.1)

Name: _____________________________________________ Grade & Section: _______________________

Teacher: __________________________________________ Date: ____________________________________

LEARN

Waste management is the collection, transportation and disposal of garbage, sewage and
other waste products. Improper waste management causes problems like clogged canals or
drainage, flooding and various diseases that make our environment unsafe. It is a big challenge
to school, home and the community on how to involve people in proper segregation of wastes. If
biodegradable, non-biodegradable and hazardous wastes can be classified and managed
properly, we can easily identify which can be re-used or converted into new things to reduce
wastes. How beautiful it is seeing no wastes or garbage scattering in our community.
Classifying and managing wastes found in school, home and community would help us
minimize problems about garbage. Biodegradable wastes should not be automatically thrown in
bins. Composting, a method taught in Agriculture subject, would help in converting
biodegradable wastes into organic fertilizer. Dead animals and rotten plants should be buried in
the pit to prevent foul odor and to make them into compost. Non-biodegradable wastes should be
converted into useful things. There are so many DIY’s or “Do It Yourself” projects that you can do
out of the wastes that do not decompose. Use your creativity to make new materials such as
toys, decorations, art projects and others. Hazardous wastes are dangerous wastes. It is advised
to put this type of waste in a sealed container and dispose properly by burying in specially built
landfills or pit. Dispose this type of waste with adult supervision.

ACTIVITY 1
Directions: Write Agree if the statement tells proper waste management at home, in
school, and in the community and Disagree if it does not.
_________________1. Burn plastic packaging to manage waste problems.
_________________2. Convert kitchen wastes like fruit and vegetable peelings into
compost. _________________3. Segregate biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclable
waste at
home.
_________________4. Pick garbage that are scattering in the community and dispose in
proper trash bins.
_________________5. Dispose dead animals in the canal or other bodies of water.
_________________6. Label the garbage cans properly in school for the children to practice
correct disposal of waste.
_________________7. Recycle plastic products into art projects to minimize the wastes.
_________________8. Support the Clean and Green Program of the community to maintain
the cleanliness of the place.
_________________9. Throw empty bottles of chemical sprays in the vacant lots.
_________________10. Sell scraps in junk shops to reduce waste and to earn money.

ACTIVITY 2
Directions: Read this poem. Answer the questions below.

1. According to the poem, where should you pitch in your biodegradable waste?
2. What color of the bin should a non-biodegradable waste be placed?

3. The wastes are recyclable. Where should you throw your waste?

4. What colors are used for coding the biodegradable, non-biodegradable and
recyclable wastes?

5. What do you think will happen to our environment if we will not practice proper
waste management?

ACTIVITY 3
Directions: Take a look at the different types of wastes in Column A. Choose the letter of
the correct answer on how to manage the wastes properly in Column B.

ACTIVITY 3
Directions: Write True if the statement shows proper management of wastes and False
if it does not.

___________1. Put the biodegradable wastes in a green bin.

___________2. Secure the garbage bag tightly to prevent animals from scattering the trash
in the community.
___________3. Throw empty plastic wrappers under the chair when nobody is watching.
___________4. Join community services like Clean and Green Program to help in the
management of wastes.
