FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LUBRICANTS

1. Does the Shell Helix Ultra 20W/50 meet international standards?

AP lubricants are blended and produced using the finest technology and materials. The
production process is overseen by a well-detailed quality assurance team to ensure the Shell
Helix Ultra 20W/50 meets International Standards.
.
2. How do I know the right Shell lubricant for my vehicle?
The Owner’s Manual of the Vehicle specifies the kind of oil to use. By rule of Thumb, for a
brand-new petrol engine car, a Synthetic Oil of 0W/30, 5W/30 or 5W/40 will do. For an
engine whose mileage has gone beyond 50,000 km, a multigrade Oil of 20W/50 will do.
However, there are no hard and fast rules about this. The state of the engine, state of the
roads, usage of the car and environment, plays a crucial role in switching from one viscosity
number to the other.

3. Which Shell lubricant is suitable for my petrol engine?

Same as response in 2

4. I just serviced my car, when will my car be due for the next service?
This depends on the factors mentioned in 2. Reiterating, the state of the engine, state of the
roads, usage of the car and environment plays a key role determining when next to take your
car for a service. Usually, Shell Helix Ultra 20W/50 can last for 4,000 to 5,000 km or 2 to 3
months, depending on which of them comes first. While a Synthetic Oil like Shell Helix Ultra
5W/30 or 5W/40 can last 100,000 km or 10 to 12 months, depending on which of them comes
first. Above all, the recommendation of the OEM supercedes.

5. How much are the Shell lubricants?

Depending on the grade you are buying. Usually, Synthetics are the highest priced because of
their high level of performance and extended drain periods.

6. Are there specific lubricants for different car models?

Yes. Depending on the OEM recommendation and the Owner’s Manual, there are specific
lubricants for different car models. A Sports Car would definitely require a very light
Synthetic Oil like a Shell Ultra 0W/20 to guarantee very low drag and high speed. While a
Hyundai Elantra would require a Shell Ultra 5W/30.

7. Can I use the same engine oil for all types of engines irrespective of the kind of fuel they
run on?
Yes and no. Some engine oils could be used for both petrol and diesel, but there would always
be one that it was originally formulated for. For instance, a Shell Helix Ultra 20W/50 (API
SL/CF) or Shell Helix Ultra 20W/50 (API SL/CF) was primarily formulated for petrol
engines but could be used for both. However, they would perform optimally for Petrol
Engines. Same applies for a Shell Rimula R4X 15W/40 (API CI-4/SL) and Shell Rimula R3+
SAE 40 (API CF/SF) were originally formulated for Diesel engines but could be used for both
Diesel and Petrol Engines but it would not get the optimal performance in a Petrol Engine.

8. What does API on the package mean?

API means ‘American Petroleum Institute’. It speaks to the quality and performance level of
the oil. The higher the API, the higher the quality. Our Shell lubricants Shell Helix HX3
20W/50 and Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 have APIs of SL/CF and SN/CF respectively. Hence, the
Quality Level of Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40, is higher than that of Shell Helix HX3 20W/50.
9. Is it advisable to switch from Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 to Shell Helix HX3 20W/50 and
back without any damage to my car?
It is not advisable to switch from a higher API quality grade to a lower API quality grade.
However, this is allowed when you begin to experience a blow-by in your engine i.e. when oil
begins to find a way into the fuel combustion chamber of your engine which results to
incomplete combustion and higher level of soot begins to exit the exhaust pipe of your engine.
In this case, financial reason is the main justification as the top up level of the engine sump
increases.

10. What is the difference between Shell Helix HX3 20W/50 and Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40?
Shell Helix HX3 20W/50 is a premium blended multigrade engine oil with an API of SL/CF.
It offers basic protection for most engines. Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40, on the other hand, is a
high-performance grade of engine oil with an excellent blend of Synthetic base oils and
additives. According to the American Petroleum Institute the Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 has a
superior quality and performance level of API SN/CF

11. Can I use Shell Helix HX3 20W/50 or Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 as Lubricants in other
parts of my car?
The Shell Helix HX3 20W/50 and Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40 lubricants are designed and best
suited to act as lubricants in engines. They are not to be used for other parts of the car
whether as ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) or for other applications other than what it
was recommended for. Every other part of the car has its own unique lubricant.

Africa.

Shell Helix Ultra 5W/40, Shell Helix Ultra 5W/30, Shell Helix Ultra 0W/20, Shell Rimula R4x
15w/40 and Shell Rimula R6 MS 10W/40 are all designed to protect against sludge in the
engine. They drain out easily at the point of servicing.

16. I want to switch from my present engine oil to Shell Helix HX3 20W/50, what do I have
to know?
Drain out the oil you used previously and replenish with Shell Helix HX3 20W/50 as you are
not technically allowed to top your engine oil with a different brand as they might not be
compatible.

17. How much engine oil do I have to buy for my car?

It depends on the size of your petrol engine sump. Some petrol engine sump can take 4 litres,
while some 5 litres. Usually, it is advisable to buy an extra one litre pack of the engine oil you
are using to service, just in case you want to top up.
