Fundamentals of Bridge Design Assignment +Project
Instructions
Part-1
1. When do we need to construct bridges?
2. Bridge is said to be a key element in any transportation system because it determines the
capacity of the system. How can a bridge determine the capacity of a highway or railway?
3. What are the economic and social benefits of bridge construction?
4. What are the objectives in bridge design? How do we attain each of the objectives
5. Why should a bridge engineer worry about safety and aesthetics in his design? Give general
guidelines that if followed would result in a bridge of improved appearance.
6. Give the design philosophy of AASHTO 2005 used in bridge design. What is each limit
state concerned with?
7. What is the purpose of investigation for bridges? Outline the steps in investigation from
preliminary up to detailed data collection and give the purpose or goal of each.
8. What information should be gathered during field visit that will help the bridge engineer
to identify the preferred location for the bridge and decide on the type, size and capacity of
the bridge?
9. What data are gathered during investigation? List the criteria used to select the best bridge
site. Does the alignment of the road affect bridge site selection in any way?
10. After site selection, give factors affecting span selection. How do these factors affect span
selection?
11. What are the factors affecting selection of the size of free board?
12. What are the contents of investigation report for a major bridge?

13. What factors must be considered in bridge type selection?
14. Compare and contrast the classical and modern bridge selection criteria and describe the
reason for the shift in thought.
15. Give at least five bridge types and the span or situation under which it’s appropriate to use
each type of bridge.
16. What types of bridges best suit a curved alignment?
17. Compare and contrast cable stayed bridges and suspension bridges with respect to span
length, load transfer and position of tendons.
18. What is the difference between through and crest truss bridges?
19. From safety and aesthetics, which is given priority during bridge design?
20. What factors determine your bridge total span and the span sub divisions?
21. What is the purpose of code load specifications?
22. List loads to be considered for bridge superstructure design. Do the same for abutments
and piers design.
23. What is the importance of superstructure analysis in bridge design?
24. How do you select method of analysis to use in bridge design in general and deck slab in
particular?
25. What are the advantages of continuous reinforced concrete bridge construction over
multiple simple span reinforced concrete bridges? What are the disadvantages?
26. What are the advantages and disadvantages of concrete and steel superstructure
construction?
27. What are the advantages of concrete-steel composite superstructure construction?
28. What are the advantages of concrete box girder bridges over other types of concrete
bridges?
29. How do you overcome the buckling of webs of plate girders?
