*FINN*

“Wine or beer?” Dave hollers while waving with the menu.

“Depends,” Celine tilts her head, furrowing her brows. “Do they have white wine?”

“Anything you want, my Alpha queen,” Dave grins.

Celine chuckles and throws her long blonde hair back before she winks at Dave.

Dave’s grin just broadens. “I swear, if I would be into girls, you’d just have made it

into my top 3!”

“You mean into your top 3 of your three girl friends?” Celine laughs. It’s truly a sight

to see her laugh so openly. When I got to know her, she was very stoic and serious.

She still is, but now when she is with her friends, she is so much more open and
relaxed. The last couple of years have been hard for her. She was the only heir to an

Alpha and had to prove herself to be worthy of taking over a pack, despite being a

she-wolf. Then she found out she was a hybrid, because she is a quarter witch. Her

mate – one of my brothers – didn’t want her at first because he was scared of being

loved and battling his own trauma, but eventually, he realized what he was about to

lose her and came around. That’s a lot to take, but she worked through it and came out

on top.

“Well, I can’t help it.” Dave puts an arm each around Annie and Ella. “I just love my

girls.” They are the centre of his life, and his oldest friends, we all know that. And

Celine certainly doesn’t take it to heart. “You are all my queens. Celine, and my

favourite Luna, Annie-“ he presses a kiss to the sweet young woman with the long

bob. She was my first friend in college, and the only one not trying to get into my

pants. Then I realized she was fated to my oldest brother. “And my fierce Ella,” This

time he delivers a kiss to the short-haired woman, Annie’s best friend and Beta. “You

are all part of my personal kingdom.”

“Well if that doesn’t sound dirty,” I tease. “What about me!?”

“Oh Finni!” Dave beams. “You know I have a weak spot for you, my cute edgelord,

don’t tempt me.” He grins. “I wonder which parts of you aside from the visible body

parts are tattooed. Plus, I’ve never had a guy with piercings. I always wondered how it

would feel if-“ He puts an index finger on his lips, smirking like the devil he can be

sometimes. “You don’t happen to be pierced down there, are you?”

Ella elbows him. “Things we don’t want to know, Dave!”

“You don’t,” he says innocently. “But I do.”

“Sorry, Dave,” I deadpan. “I’m waiting for my mate. She will be the only one to be

allowed to discover all my piercings and tattoos.”

“All wolves I met say that,” he sighs dramatically.

“What? That they keep their tattoos and piercings to themselves?” Ella teases.

He chuckles. “No, that they are waiting for their mates.”

“You and Jun really broke it off?” Annie asks sadly.

Dave looks a lot more serious all of a sudden “We all know that wolves are destined

to find their mates eventually. And when Jun finds his, he wouldn’t have stayed with

me anyway. That’s a reality. I don’t want to be the reason his mate will feel

unwelcomed, or like there is unfinished business in Jun’s life. It isn’t fair.”

I’m a bit surprised by how aware of it he is. Dave and Jun, Annie’s Gamma, might

have hit it off instantly, but Dave is right… Jun is a werewolf. Once he finds his mate,

he will be with them. That’s why we normally don’t have serious relationships before

we find our mates. Too much heartache.

Dave grins at me. “You can join my harem though Finn.”

“Wow, do I feel honoured,” I snort.

Our group chuckles and when the waitress approaches us half of us order beer, the

other white wine. We have gathered in a Greek restaurant for a change, and especially

to Dave who prefers places he already knows, this is quite the adventure.

When I started college a few years ago, I didn’t think I would meet this awesome

circle of friends. But Annie literally picked me up like a stray pup and introduced me

to her best friends, a fellow werewolf, Ella, and a Human, Dave. Then our group

expanded with Celine.

This group was such a blessing for me, and I will cherish these friendships forever.

We manage to meet once every two weeks with everyone, which is great considering

the positions and ranks some of us are holding.

“Show us the photos,” Dave begs Annie now.

She chuckles in amusement, but angles for her phone nevertheless and shows us the

newest photos of her baby twins. My cute nieces. There is one where the babies have

thrown chocolate at my brother Liam, everything – their hair, clothes, and also Liam –

is covered in it. I laugh. “Send that to me, Annie. That’s going to be my new

background image.”

“What did these two cuties do?” Dave grins.

“Let’s say we had a chocolate muffin emergency,” Annie says mock-seriously, and

types something on her phone, sending the pic to me. “I wanted to bake something for

Liam, and unfortunately the twins got their hands on the chocolate ganache.” She

smiles. “Dave, you have to meet my girls soon.”

“I would love to,” he beams.

“I will make sure we find a safe place to meet. I’ll let Liam go through the security

standards and then I can either take the babies along to meet you or we’ll smuggle you

to the packgrounds,” she smiles warmly. “They need to meet their uncle Dave.”

I listen to their conversation with only half an ear, while looking at the photo Annie

just sent me. It’s adorable. The twins are the cutest little beings ever. My strong stoic

brother, a Lycan Alpha through and through, looks so happy despite being covered in

chocolate. I’m so happy for him to have found his mate, and for all his success. He

worked hard for it, and I’m full-heartedly happy for him.
A tiny part of me also feels sad though whenever I see my friends and family with

their mates. I want nothing more than to find the other half of my soul too.

All my female friends are mated to someone either within my family, or very close to

me. Like Annie… she is mated to my oldest brother. Celine, the Alpha of Moon

Blood, she is mated to my second oldest brother Marius. Ella is mated to Liam’s Beta,

Dante. While none of them had it in any way easy, I still envy them a bit. I wish I

would find what they have found. It doesn’t mean I’m not genuinely happy for them, I

am. I just want to find this person too, the one who holds the other part of my soul.

I will these feelings down though, not wanting to ruin our night out. The evening turns

out fun. It’s going to be my last one for a while which is why we all met in the first

place. Soon I will take off on my mission to investigate a cruel pack in the north. It’s

said to enslave lower-ranking pack members and orphans. Our informant even says

that the higher-ranking pack members can call the slaves for any services… sex

included. My father and Liam entrusted me with this task, and I’m ready to take it on.

I am happy to finally be able to prove myself, and to get my mind away from finding

my mate.

“Okay Finn,” Annie takes a deep breath before handing me a little box. “This is from

all of us. We know you can’t take much with you on your mission, but we wanted you

to carry something as a good luck charm.”

My eyes widen slightly when I open the box. It’s a necklace out of platin, a bit like

one army guys wear, but it’s definitely handcrafted and has a wonderful design. It

seems like my friends got together and had it ordered to be handmade. On the tag,

they have all their names carved in.

“Whenever you look at it you will think of us now,” Dave beams.

“And it’s not a typical design, so you can wear it safely,” Ella explains.

Celine nods. “She is right. You can wear it while investigating Blood Snow pack

without raising any suspicions.

I flush a bit, happy and touched by that beautiful gesture. “Thank you, guys. I don’t

even know what to say. Just… thank you! It means the world to me.”

“Come home safely,” Annie says into the silence.

~~~
Annie drives back to her pack with Ella, who as her Beta is also responsible for her
safety. These two are a pretty dope combination. Ever since the recent threats died
down and Annie went through her pregnancy safely, Liam felt a bit more relaxed to
let his Luna leave without being surrounded by ten guards.
Celine drives back with one of her warriors.
That leaves just me, Dave, and my own guard and Beta, Anders. As royal Lycans, we
are used to having a Beta assigned to us at a younger age. It’s usually someone we
chose ourselves. If we don’t trust anyone enough, like my brother Marius for example,
we might not choose anyone at all. But for me when I was young, I immediately felt a
bond with this older boy. He was the son of a couple that immigrated from Ireland, he
was calm and composed and nothing like me. One day he protected me from a bunch
of bullies when I was seven or eight years old. Ever since he has been at my side.
“Finn,” Dave starts after a while. “You will find your mate.”
I look at him surprised, and a bit horrified that he caught on before. “You noticed!?” I
turn to Anders who just shrugs helplessly.
No one else did, my Prince, he promises.
Anders always addresses me formally, despite us being pretty close. Our relationship
is hard to explain. He doesn't feel like a brother to me – I have plenty of them already
– he also doesn’t feel like a friend, more like a… guardian, someone who is always
there when I’m in trouble. Someone to rely on.
I turn my attention towards Dave again. “How did you notice?” I ask again.
He shrugs. “I am the only Human within our group, and I know how it feels to be
different. I personally don’t mind, but I just noticed the situation might be similar for
you.” He pauses in his track to look at me. “Okay, I might not understand your entire
world as wolves, but… I know one thing. You are a Lycan prince, and despite that,
you treat a gay Human guy like your equal. You treat your female friends of any rank
with so much respect – you did so even before Annie was mated to your brother,
when she was still an Omega. You support your siblings whole-heartedly, and your
friends. There was never once a moment you didn’t help any of us, and you never
asked for anything in return. You are just a genuinely good person, and the reason I
didn’t hit on you for real is because I know I would have fallen head over heels for
you if I did.” He pauses. “Do you really think your moon goddess will leave a man
like you without a mate?”
I let his words sink in, before I take a shaky breath. “Thank you, Dave,” I say, because
I can’t trust my voice to say anymore. “That’s exactly what I needed to hear.”
We walk in silence for a while. “So, what are you up to now?” Dave wants to know.
“I’m going to head home and get some sleep. I have to meet Liam tomorrow for a
meeting, and then I’m meeting my whole team.”
“How are they getting along?”
I tilt my head, sighing slightly. “Let’s just say, I have quite the challenge waiting for
me.”
“Annie’s brother is coming too, right? And one of Celine’s top warriors?”
“Well, these two won’t be a problem,” I chuckle. “But I have two sets of crazy twins
accompanying me, and they already hate each other. Now that’s going to be
interesting.”
Dave laughs slightly. “I’m sure you will be able to handle it.”
“I hope so.” I pause. “What about you, any plans for tonight?”
He winks at me. “Absolutely, big plans. I’m meeting with Jun.” Before I can say
anything, he raises his hands. “Just as friends. We will hit a pub and maybe he can
play my wingman. There is a regular in the pub, who is kind of cute.”
I smile. “Have fun.”
“I will.” Dave clasps my shoulder. “Stay in contact with us. Annie has opened that
WhatsApp chat for a reason. Try to write as often as possible so that we know you are
alright. And please try to stay out of trouble.” He looks worried all of a sudden.
“Celine, Ella, and Annie don’t talk much about it to me, but I know the pack you’ll be
investigating is pretty shit, so please be careful.”
“I will Dave,” I promise. “Now go and have fun!”
He grins and waves me goodbye before hurrying away. I watch him leave before
continuing to walk side by side with Anders. We don’t talk about anything, just
enjoying the silence of the night. Tomorrow is going to be busy enough, and I’m glad
to have some peace for now.
Chapter 2 Max
2719 Words
*FINN*
I skip breakfast and head directly to Red Claw, the pack my brother Liam and Annie
rule over.
“Finn!” Annie waits for me in front of the pack house, already expecting me. In her
arms, she is holding one of her babies. The other is being cooed at and entertained by
one of the pack warriors. The whole pack is crazy about the babies. It’s not surprising
though. When Annie and Liam took over Red Claw they did so after defeating the
previous cruel Alpha, they freed the pack and the pack members are fiercely loyal to
them for it.
“Annie,” I approach her swiftly, beaming at the baby in her arms. They are growing
every day, and by the way the little girl grabs Annie's hair and tugs at it, I assume
she's going to be a little whirlwind soon. “Goddess, which one are you?” I grin. They
are fraternal twins but yet they’re so difficult to tell apart. “Oh, she has a tiny mole at
her neck. That’s my girl Aurora!”
Annie carefully hands me the younger of the twins and kisses the top of her head. “Go
to your uncle Finn.”
When she approaches the pack warrior to gather her firstborn daughter, Asteria, the
man looks sad. “I can keep her entertained a bit longer Luna,” he promises.
“Goodness gracious,” she laughs. “Alright. Five more minutes, then we need to head
inside.” She turns to me now, eyeing me curiously. “I noticed yesterday already, but
didn’t want to say anything in front of the others… you got rid of your nose
piercing?”
“You noticed?” I chuckle. In my rebellious phase, I went for quite some piercings and
tattoos. I still like them for the most part, but got rid of one or another piercing
recently. I just didn’t like all of them anymore.
She reaches out her finger, poking the piercing on my eyebrow. “Glad you left that
one.”
I show her a mischievous smile and stretch out my tongue at her, revealing my tongue
piercing. “I also kept that one.”
She laughs. “Good that you didn’t turn into an all serious and boring adult, and
changed everything you are.”
“Never, Annie.”
She smiles warmly before finally luring her daughter away from the warrior and
leading me inside the building. Liam already waits for us in his office. Before even
greeting me properly, my brother, the huge and tall scary Lycan, one of the strongest I
know, fetches his daughter from my hands and kisses her chubby cheek. “Here comes
my princess!” he coos.
“Well thank you,” I joke. “But technically I’m a prince, not a princess.”
He narrows his eyes at me. “Very funny.”
It is, a bit, but I don’t say it out loud. It’s a bit weird to see him like that, considering
who he is. Other packs call him the Silver Alpha because he was able to free himself
from silver ties, making Annie the Silver Luna because she is immune to silver. Most
people don’t know his soft side. I find it endearing though. “How come you can tell
them apart?” I ask curiously. I know for a fact that only Annie can tell them apart for
now. They will start to look different eventually as they are not identical twins, also
their individual scents will get more distinctive.
“I can’t,” he smirks. “But I dressed them today. And my little sunshine is wearing her
favourite yellow onesie. My little sunflower.” He swiftly turns to Annie and
exchanges babies with her. “And my little Alpha heir looks all stylish in her green
outfit.” When he kisses Asteria’s tummy, the girl giggles loudly.
“Okay, I really need to take the girls away or we will never focus on anything else,”
Annie chuckles, before taking the baby from a reluctant Liam and leaving the room. “I
will hand them to their nanny for now. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
For a moment we wait in silence before Liam offers me a seat on the little sofa
arrangement in his office. “You want something to drink? I think it’s too early for the
heavy stuff, but how about coffee?”
“Coffee is fine,” I nod.
“I’ll link the kitchen staff.” He sits down as well, stretching his long legs a bit. “Okay
Finn, I don’t want to sound like the overbearing overprotective older brother, but take
this.” He hands me an old-fashioned phone, no smartphone, but one of these old flip
phones. “No one will be able to track this, as only dad and I know of it. Write me
every 48 hours. If I don’t hear from you, I will know something is off.”
“I’m sure things will go smoothly Liam,” I reassure him but take the phone
nevertheless.
He tilts his head. “You never know. I know you are an adult Finn. You are turning 23
soon, and I know you can watch out for yourself. I also know that you trained a lot
and your Lycan is strong, and you will be with strong allies on your mission, but you
know what they say: better safe than sorry.”
I nod thankfully. “Alright, I will humour you and dad,” I tease, without actually
meaning it. I’m glad they have thought of a way to know if something is off. It’s good
to know that I’m having some backup. “What if it breaks though?”
“It’s one of these ancient phones that were made for eternity,” Liam smirks. “You will
need your Lycan to stomp on it for it to break.”
“Got it,” I laugh.
Liam is quiet for a while before he looks at me seriously. “I’m very proud of you
Finn, and the man you became. I always knew you had it in you, even in your
rebellious teen phase, but you really exceeded my expectations.”
This is rare. Both Liam and my father are more the brooding and stoic type of men. A
word of praise from them means a lot. However, I still feel undeserving of his praise.
“I didn’t do anything special, Liam.”
“You are strong and kind, and you always look out for the weak. People trust you
because you are genuine and honest. These are all great traits.” He leans back a bit.
“You will do great on this mission, and I don’t think there is anyone better for it. This
is not just something Dad handed to you because he took pity on you, or to take your
mind off searching for your mate. He chose you because you are one of the most
capable people around. The group you will lead is going to be difficult, but none of us
has any doubts you will make sure to keep them focused.”
I don’t know what to say. This is the second time in two days that I feel at a loss of
words because someone suddenly told me I’m great the way I am. I don’t lack
confidence or anything, but as one of six siblings I’m by far the most… invisible one
for a lack of a better word. If it weren’t for my edgy appearance I doubt anyone would
notice me. “Thank you, Liam,” I say because I have no idea what else to say. His
words mean more to me than anything else. “I won’t disappoint you.”
He smiles. “I know.”
Before I can say anymore the door opens and Annie appears with a member of the
kitchen staff. With them comes the scent of fresh coffee and some sandwiches and
croissants.
“I figured you might be hungry,” Annie comments dryly. “You Alpha wolves can eat
like there is no tomorrow.”
Her words make us both chuckle. She is right though. We can eat a lot, and we are
both children of an Alpha with Alpha blood running through us. Liam’s aura is far
more distinctive and stronger though, he was born to be a ruling Alpha. I might be a
wolf with Alpha blood too, but I’m not as strong as Liam and I don’t have the same
drive he has.
Still, I’m hungry as fuck.
“Finn,” Annie says into the silence while Liam and I munch on our sandwiches, an
expression of worry on her face. “I have a huge request.”
I feel instantly worried by her expression, hopefully, there is nothing wrong. She is
one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, and I would hate if she were worried about
something. “Anything, Annie”
“You don’t even know what I’m going to ask from you,” she smiles.
“I know that I will do it anyway,” I say with conviction. “So what is it?”
“It’s about my brother.”
“Steve?” I blink.
“I’m very proud of him for being chosen for this mission. He is only 19, and I know
he is going to do well despite his age. He is a really good guy, and he won’t let you
down, I promise. He knows how to follow orders, Finn, although he is a bit reckless
sometimes, and he is...” she pauses. “Sometimes he is scared of asking too many
questions, because he thinks others might deem him as not bright enough. So if he
makes mistakes it’s normally because of that.”
I nod tentatively. That’s good to know. It means I’ll need to encourage him a bit to
speak his mind. “I know he is going to do very well, Annie,” I reassure her. “Celine
vouched for him too, as his Alpha.”
Annie smiles proudly. “He is really training hard for this mission.” She pauses. “Finn,
I won’t ask you for the impossible which is to bring him home completely unharmed.
I also won’t make you give me any promises, but just keep an eye on him, please.”
Liam has reached out his hand meanwhile, resting it against her knee. Now he puts his
arms around her shoulders and kisses the top of her head. “Don’t worry too much,
Annalise,” he mutters.
“I will give my best to protect him,” I promise her. “Steve is also part of my family,
he is like a brother to me, and I won’t let you or him down.”
~~~

After I went through some details with Annie and Liam, I’m getting ready to meet my

team, the group of werewolves and Lycans accompanying me on the mission. I have

met all of them individually up to now, and went through some details with them, we

have also met in smaller groups, but this is the first time we will all meet. I’ve invited

them to my pack, Silverlake. As one of the Alpha’s children, I have the luxury to call

a pretty big apartment in the packhouse my own. All of us have our own place.

What do you think about our mission? I ask my Lycan while Anders drives us back to

Silverlake. Silence. Max? Still silence. Hello? Earth to Maximilian!?

I can see his head pop up in my mind, he looks slightly dishevelled. Oh sorry, didn’t

catch that! What were you talking about?

I can’t believe it! Weren’t you listening at all!?

He yawns loudly. Just had the best sleep ever. You can’t blame me.

Good thing I know you have my back, I huff. My wolf is a giant, and strong, but he is

also the laziest wolf I have ever encountered. He drops to his back now, stretching his

limbs and rubbing his head against the ground. A dignified image, truly. Is this how

you are going to woo our mate once we find her?

He doesn’t even bother to change his position, just turns his head a bit, rubbing his

back against the ground and letting his tongue hang out. Oh, we both know we have a

true weapon in our pants. If that’s not wooing her, I don’t know what is!

To woo her that way we have to get to the part where I lower my pants, I answer

dryly.
That’s your job then. You are the human, wooing the other human is on you, he says

smugly. I will reach out to her wolf.

And if she doesn’t have one? I ask tauntingly.

He stares at me. What does that mean? Why are you saying that?

We could be mated to a Human or another creature, a witch maybe.

For a moment Maximilian looks crestfallen, but he recovers fast. Even then I have full

faith in you and your pants! Then he turns his back to me, stretching a bit and snoring

off.

Awesome. I roll my eyes. Liam ends up with a dignified strong beast, my other

brother Marius has a slightly clumsy but very strong Lycan, my sister has a regal

proud one. And I’m stuck with Mr. Couchpotato.

Anders looks at me amused. “A little argument with your wolf?”

“What can I say?” I chuckle. “It just so happens that my wolf is the laziest of all. Pity

we can’t win any competition by sleeping. If he were a human, he would be your

prime example of a middle-aged man with a beer belly, rubbing it while munching on

crisps and watching his favourite reality TV show.”

Against his normally so stoic appearance, Anders laughs slightly. “That was a very

distinctive image, Lord Finn.” He is a quiet man with short red hair, and quite bulky.

He is half Lycan, but still very strong. Over the last few years, and through my

friendship with Annie, I learned a lot about werewolves and Lycans, being that

strength doesn’t always mean having the biggest wolf. Celine for example is a

werewolf, but she can easily overpower most male wolves of Alpha blood, and also

several Lycans.
“Yeah, he might or might not have gotten on my nerves just now,” I admit. I love the

other part of my soul, my Lycan. He has shortcomings like all of us have, as I have,

and he always has my back – well unless he doesn’t sleep, but sometimes he is just so

fucking annoying. “So, what do I need to do for you to drop the formalities? At least

when we are alone you could call me by my name.”

Anders sighs, his face is serious again. “It just feels wrong,” he admits. “I’m sorry, I

don’t want to upset you.”

“You are not upsetting me,” I say. Well, not anymore. As a teen, I sometimes felt like

he didn’t like me, but then I learned it’s just the way he was raised. And Anders

always had my back, so there is that.

He looks at me for a moment like he wants to say something, but then remains quiet.

“You have a question?” I ask directly.

He sighs. “It’s nothing.”

“Just ask me,” I urge.

“I feel bad not accompanying you to Blood Snow,” he finally admits. “I should come

with you to protect you!”

I sigh slightly. “It’s not possible Anders. You know we are all pretending to be heirs

to either the Beta rank or warriors in training.”

“I know I would look too old,” he admits, begrudgingly so.

It’s just one reason though, the other reason, I can’t tell him. I can’t tell anyone. But

Anders is family, and while my bond to my family is very strong, I feel like this here

is something I need to do on my own.

Chapter 3 Double Trouble

2723 Words

*FINN*

The first one to arrive is Steve. He waves and smiles at me when I let him into my

suite at the packhouse. “It’s so good to see you, Finn,” he beams.

“Good to have you here, man,” I clasp his shoulder and his smile widens.

“I can’t thank you enough for this chance!” he exclaims.

“Steve,” I chuckle. “You already thanked me the last ten times we met.”

“But I mean it,” he emphasises.

“I know, but you are forgetting that I’m taking you along for a reason. I need you to

have my back.”

He gives me the thumbs up. “You can count on me, boss!”

I roll my eyes. “Don’t call me boss. We are friends, and you are Annie’s brother. We

are family.”

“I know,” he stretches a bit like he is ready to get into a fight any second. “I’m just so

motivated.”
“Keep the spirit up,” I chuckle. “Because I doubt everyone will be that excited.”

“Who are you thinking of?” Steve asks, surprised.

“The twins,” I say shortly.

“Which ones?”

Right, I forgot I’ll be travelling with two pairs of them. Kind of a crazy combination

indeed. “Alpha Jace’s sons,” I explain.

Steve rubs over his head a bit. “Yeah, but I guess they’ll come around. I’m sure they

are nice. They are probably just shy.”

Alpha Jace is an old friend of my father and I know his sons well. They’re identical

twins and equal in their strength, which is a rarity in our world, and it means they will

both inherit the Alpha position one day.

Frankly, I would call his sons a lot of things, but shy is definitely not one of the words

I’d use. Not to say I don’t like them, I do, but they are two rebellious and sassy guys.

One of them has an anger problem, the other is a playboy, and they both have troubles

with authority which is why their father asked me to take them with me.

Steve’s slight innocence concerning these matters is truly heart-warming. He grew up

in a loving home, and his two older sisters always had his back and cherished him for

who he was. Their home was comforting and warm. It’s not that my home wasn’t

warm and loving, I have a great relationship with my siblings and parents, but it’s

different to grow up as an Alpha’s child and a Lycan royal. I guess all of us learned to

face reality pretty early on, and learned to take on responsibility fast. It’s really

different to have a strong beast inside you, a beast one needs to control. Every time I

see Steve, it reminds me of how it would have been to grow up in a normal family.
When Annie introduced her family to us, my younger siblings and I immediately hit it

off with Steve, and I’m glad he was suggested for this mission. It will be good to have

someone with me who has a fresh new look at things.

“Oh,” Steve’s head perks up. “Marcel is here too. We arrived together. I completely

forgot to tell you.” He facepalms. “Said he would just exchange a few words with

some of the guards.”

“No problem, Steve, I figured you two came together. You are from the same pack

after all.”

Steve flashes me a bright smile. “True!”

“Are you hungry?” I ask him. “The kitchen staff prepared hot dogs and burgers for us.

I thought you guys would like that.”

“And beer?” Steve asks with a grin.

“Yes, for after work,” I chuckle and hand him a soda instead. I’m strictly following a

no drinks at work policy.

A knock against my door pulls me away from our chatting. I open the door for

Marcel, welcoming him to my place. Marcel is a tall and muscular guy, but he is not

as bulky as Steve. He is one of the elite warriors of their pack, and their Alpha –

Celine – sent him with me to make sure we were protected. My sister says he looks a

bit like a young Denzel Washington. “Hey Finn,” he bows a bit and shakes my hand.

“Thanks for the invitation.”

When he enters, he clasps Steve’s shoulder in a friendly manner, and fist bumps him. I

don’t know Marcel well yet, but I know that everyone seems to like him. Apparently,

he is a laid back, kind and fun guy to have around.

“It’s good to get to know you a bit before we set off,” I admit.
“Hey, you know me a bit by now,” he says, revealing his perfect white teeth in a

bright smile. “I’m easy to be around.”

“That’s good, means I’ll have help to tackle the twins. And I mean both pairs of

them,” I say.

He grins. “I haven’t met them yet, are they that devious?”

“Well, the girls are advisors of my cousin in France, he is a Prince of the Council.

They are very capable and even know a bit of witchcraft, but they are a bit…”

“Creepy?” Steve helps me.

“I was going for interesting, but creepy might fit too,” I chuckle. “And the guys…

well, you heard of them already.”

Marcel frowns in worry. “Alpha Celine told me about them,” he admits. “And asked

me to support you as much as possible. She counts on me, and I won’t let neither you

nor her down, Finn.”

“Oh, come on!” Steve nudges him with his elbows. “They are not going to be that

bad, and you get along with just about everyone.” He looks at me. “Marcel has been

training me during the last few weeks.”

“Yes, Steve is making great progress,” Marcel nods proudly. “His wolf is pretty big

too and a good fighter.”

Steve blushes a bit at the praise. He is obviously ready to prove himself to us and his

pack. I know he is a capable fighter, he is just young, he turned 19 only recently,

which means his skills aren’t as polished as ours, but he is strong and has good

instincts. A gentle giant in a way.

“You’ll see, it’s going to work well with the twins too,” Steve urges. “And it’s good

to have two women around.”

“How come?” Marcel asks curiously.

“Too much testosterone otherwise,” Steve says and sips at his soda.

“Wise words,” Marcel admits.

“Marcel, you need to help keep an eye on Elise and Elodie,” I urge him.

“Why? Are they that much trouble?” he asks, surprised.

“No, but they aren’t 18 yet. Almost, but not quite. They finished school at the age of

17 and started working for Eric soon afterwards.” I pause. “It’s hard to explain, but

they are full-fledged members of the Council already despite their age.”

Marcel nods. “You’re worried about them.”

“I want to make sure nothing bad happens to them,” I emphasise. Eric wouldn’t have

let them join us if they weren’t extremely capable, but still, I want to make sure.

Before we can chat for longer, I can hear loud voices coming from the corridor

leading to my place. A bunch of guys and girls seem to be arguing about something.

“Wow, aren’t we off to a good start already?” I say while I open the door swiftly,

eyeing the troupe in front of me. Two identical male twins are looking at me in

surprise. Two strong and tall guys, it’s obvious they have Alpha blood in them. Their

hair is brown, one of them wears it shorter with an undercut, making him look a bit

tougher, the other a bit longer, medium length giving him a bit of a softer look.

“Anthony and Henry,” I say with a smile, thanking the goddess that they are wearing

different haircuts or it would be impossible to tell them apart. And I really don’t want

to sniff at them all the time to figure out who is who. “Nice to see you guys. Come on

in.” I let them slip past me, finally giving view of the girls right behind them, they’re

identical twins too. Unfortunately, they didn’t go for different haircuts, they even
dress the same. I’m pretty sure they do that to tease everyone around them. As

identical twins their scent is very similar too.

“Fuck, couldn’t you have gone for different looks?” I chuckle.

They both flash me a toothy grin. “Where would be the fun there!?”

I hug them both. Even though they already hate Anthony and Henry I’m glad that they

come along. My cousin Eric visited us a few months ago, and he asked them to stay

behind and help me out. They are not only very capable but they are also a bit of

family, albeit not related. “Nice to see you Finn,” one of them smiles.

The other one gets on her tiptoes to whisper into my ear. “You can tell us apart by the

bracelets we wear. Elodie is wearing one with a cat pendant. I’m the one with the dog

pendant.” She raises her brows. “If you tell anyone though I’ll castrate you, and then

switch bracelets with Elodie.”

“Thank you for the warning, Elise,” I grin. “I won’t tell anyone. They’ll be so

fascinated that I can tell you apart. They will think it’s my gift. So come on in, meet

everyone.”

Actually, my gift indeed would allow me to tell them apart, but using it drains me and

I would never use it just for the fun of it.

Once back inside, I can notice how Anthony has stretched on the sofa, not even

moving an inch for anyone. Elodie doesn’t bat an eye though, just approaches him and

pushes his legs away to sit down.

“If you want to touch me, baby, just say something,” Anthony winks at her.

“No thanks,” she gags. “I don’t want to get any diseases. I know your reputation with

the ladies.”
He glares at her, but she is completely unfazed. Meanwhile, Elise sits down on her lap

and chuckles slightly.

Marcel turns to look at me. “Yeah,” he mutters. “I can see what you were scared of.”

“Of us?” Elise chuckles. “We wouldn’t backstab Finn ever. He is Prince Eric’s cousin,

and we pledged loyalty to Prince Eric, the Council and the royal Lycans. They took us

in when no one else did, and gave us a home.”

“Couldn’t have said it more heartfelt, huh?” Anthony raises his brows.

“At least some of us know how to spell responsibility,” Elodie defends her sister.

“What did you already achieve!?”

“We are only 18,” Anthony shoots back. “Not much time to achieve anything.”

“Steve there is just 19,” Elise says lazily. “Heard he is working his butt off during

training.” When Steve looks at her surprised, she just shrugged. “We did our

homework.”

“You did a background check?” Marcel asks, surprised.

“Of course, on everyone, and you are definitely more our type than those sleazy

twins,” Elodie smirks.

“Yes,” Elise giggles. “He is-“

“-manly and that-“ Elodie concludes

“-smooth skin. I would like to-“

“-take a bite of this chocolaty prince.”

They both look at each other and giggle, while Marcel looks at me with raised brows.

I shrug, told you so, I form with my lips. A bit creepy. “He has a name though,” I

point out, the term chocolate making me cringe a bit. “Marcel.”

“Oh I don’t mind,” Marcel laughs. “As long as I can call you two my pretty Milky

Way bars?”

“Oh, we understand each other,” Elise wiggles her brows and when Marcel shows her

his fist, she bumps against it with hers.

Well at least one twin pair seems to be somewhat getting along with the group, but I

can’t help but feel worried about my troublemaker guys there. It’s weird considering

they are the same age as Steve, but Steve shows so much more maturity and

responsibility.

“What about you guys?” Marcel turns to Anthony. “You are Henry, right?”

“No,” Anthony says while checking Marcel from head to toe. “The one with the sexy

undercut is Henry.”

Henry smacks his shoulder. “This hot guy there is Anthony.”

“Ah sorry,” Marcel’s good-natured character comes forward as he completely ignores

the slight arrogance the twins always display. Celine really chose well when she asked

him to accompany me.

“You are a pack warrior?” Elodie asks.

“Marcel is an elite warrior of Moon Blood,” I explain to her and the others.

“And you?” Anthony finally graces Steve with his attention.

Steve smiles brightly at him. “I don’t have a rank yet, but I’m training to become a

warrior.”

Anthony and Henry exchange a gaze. “So, nothing special, huh?” Henry mutters more

to his brother than to us.

Marcel and I both frown and exchange a gaze. Yeah, what could possibly go wrong?

Hopefully Max will be on alert too.

Did you say something? Max unexpectedly chimes in.

Ah sorry Monsieur, I wasn’t aware you were awake from your 24 hours slumber.

Very funny, Max growls before eyeing me curiously. So, what did I miss? Found our

mate yet?

No, Max, I didn’t find our mate yet. I can’t help but feel amused. However, I finally

got the whole group together.

Yeah, the pair of arrogant twins and the crazy twins might mean trouble, he muses.

But the other two don’t look too bad.

We are definitely on the same page here. Well, once awake, Max normally is a pretty

reasonable wolf. I need to make sure the dynamics don’t spiral in a toxic direction, I

muse.

Yes, but you can do it, Max sounds confident. Finn, we are Alpha by blood. We might

not lead a pack, and maybe we never will, but we have Alpha blood in us, and we are

stronger than the arrogant twins. Just make sure they learn that soon!

That’s actually good advice, I think. How come you are showing so much wisdom?

You think I sleep? No, my human, I meditate. He flashes me a grin, making me

wonder how he will ever swoon a she-wolf with that creepy smile. Hopefully she is

blown away by his other attributes. And I’m going right back to doing that.

So we are calling it meditating now? I grin.

Yep

Well then, good sleep… or rather good mediation.

I turn my attention back to my chaos troupe in front of me, eyeing in worry how

Elodie and Elise glare at Anthony and Henry. Meanwhile, Steve looks a bit insecure.

In a few weeks we will be taking off, and they all need to get their act together, so I
decide to loosen the tension by having some food brought along. Wolves are always

hungry, and expectantly all of them are head over heels for some hamburgers.

Who knows maybe they will bond a bit over their food?

When Elodie takes the last chicken burger though, snagging it away right from Henry,

the latter glares at her. She flashes him a devious grin while biting into the burger with

a moan.

Yeah… maybe not.

Chapter 4 The Goddess-forsaken Pack

2363 Words

*FREYA*

I run through the corridor of the third floor, as silently as possible while throwing

careful glances behind me to make sure no one is following me. Omegas and slaves

are not allowed on this floor of the packhouse, it’s only for higher-ranking wolves and

chosen subordinates of the Alpha. We are only allowed to enter if precisely ordered

so.
“Amaryllis?” I whisper. “Ryllis?”

I try to focus on my wolf senses, trying to take up my friend’s scent. Funnily my

senses as a wolf still work, despite the Alpha forcing us to take wolfsbane on a regular

basis.

I still have my wolf, I still feel her. She talks to me and she is strong – at least

mentally. The wolfsbane has toned our senses down, but didn’t erase them

completely. Unlike the other slaves, I’m tall, almost like a werewolf with Beta rank,

but I could never shift into a wolf, so the Alpha demoted me to an Omega first and to

a slave later.

Sereia, can you feel her anywhere? I ask my wolf. Is Ryllis here? Amaryllis is my

best friend here, and it worries me to no end that I haven’t found her yet. Ever since

one of high-ranking warriors called for her a few hours ago, she hasn’t returned.

Hopefully, they didn’t do anything to her.

Please let her be well.

The sinking feeling in my stomach tells me otherwise though. If she were well, she

would have returned long ago.

Her scent is weak, the soothing and calm voice of my wolf reaches me. But she is

somewhere around here. Let me take over, dear.

Of course. I trust no one as much as my wolf, well aside from Amaryllis. Ryllis is my

best friend, the little sister I never had. She only recently turned 18, and she is the

sweetest person I’ve ever met. She is small and fragile, with large doe eyes that make

her look so innocent and cute. Like a doll. But unfortunately, it also raises attention

from this goddess-forsaken pack of creeps. I swear, if it weren’t for her, I would have

already left this shitty place, even if it would cost my life. For most of the time, the
other slaves and I manage to hide Amaryllis away, and make sure she doesn’t cross

paths with anyone. But if a higher-ranking member calls for her in particular, there is

no way to deny that offer.

I remember this one incident when Ludovcia, the head of the Omegas and slaves, a

fiercely protective older woman, punched Ryllis to send her to the infirmary, just so

that the creeps couldn’t get her. Such a trick only works once or maybe a second time.

We got creative with our excuses and reasons as to why she was not available, but it

doesn’t always work.

Today it didn’t.

I can feel Sereia’s presence getting stronger, closing my eyes to let her take over. It’s

always a weird feeling, like an out-of-body experience, but it’s not a bad feeling.

Sereia hands back control fast. She is close. Two or three doors further from here.

Left side.

Thank you, Sereia.

Don’t mention it. Let’s get that poor girl.

No sounds seem to come from anywhere, so I decide to make a run for it, dashing

forward and towards the direction Sereia pointed me. I’m not scared of this pack or

the assholes who lead it, but I don’t need to run into them here. They’re just waiting

for a reason to get rid of me.

Slaves are prey for everyone in this pack, even lower than the Omegas. I’m the only

exception, and up to now, I don’t know why. I just remember that after I turned 17

and couldn’t shift… and hence was demoted… some warriors and the Alpha’s son

called for me, for some extra services. I don’t remember what happened there, I just

know no one was able to touch me. Ludovica, who keeps watching out for us… or at
least tries to…, told me shards were lying around, the glass of the windows was

broken, and some of these shards had pierced some of the men.

I wish I could remember. Afterwards, the Alpha claimed that it was a coincidence,

some sort of earthquake. I don’t know if that’s true or not, I just know that from that

day on, none of these guys ever tried to touch me again. The maximum I receive is a

punch or slap, and even that the lower-ranking warriors don’t dare to do.

I hear voices coming closer and silently hide behind the thick curtains of the floor-

length windows, keeping my breath as low as possible. I thank the goddess over and

over again that I don’t have the scent of a wolf, and can easily sneak past everyone as

long as I’m not seen.

When I finally reach my destination, I slip into the room silently. Sereia was right,

Amaryllis’ scent is strong here. The room reeks of alcohol and drugs, but I can also

smell her.

“Ryllis,” I whisper, noticing her trembling form next to the bed they have tied her to.

There are bruises on her wrist and face, and my heart breaks for her. They didn’t even

untie her properly. I tug the ties off her body and hug her close. “Sweetheart, it’s

alright, I’m here.”

“You found me,” she whispers.

I brush over her hair softly, reigning my anger and my wrath in. They are monsters,

just monsters. Who would do something like that to another person!? “I’ll always find

you,” I reassure her quietly. “I wish I were faster.”

“You couldn’t have done anything,” her voice trembles, breaking slightly. “...would

have killed you…”

“Let’s get you out of here,” I say softly, brushing a strand of hair out of her face and

carefully touching her cheek to look at the bruises there. Amaryllis was never allowed

to shift aside for the first time when her wolf awakened, which is why her wolf is

weak and can’t heal her. She was orphaned and physically weak, which sealed her fate

to be turned to a slave. “We can’t stay here, it’s not safe.” I pause. “Do you think you

can do that, honey? Come with me?”

She nods.

I gently free her from the remains of her ties, and wrap a cardigan I brought along

over her trembling form. Goddess, she is so small and fragile. I need to think of

something, or they will break her for real. Every day I’m scared she might diminish

into thin air and just fade away. I can’t allow that to happen.

“Let’s go, Ryllis,” I say softly, feeling how she clenches her fingers around my hand.

I wrap my arm around her waist to steady her and lead her away.

Take the other way, Sereia commands when I’m about to head back the same way I

came.

I don’t question her words. She definitely knows best, and her goal is to keep me safe.

“Shhh,” I whisper towards Amaryllis. “We are getting you out of here.”

I’m slower with Amaryllis at my side, and it is a risk for both of us, but I need to get

her away. We make it through the corridor, turn right like Sereia tells me to, and then

walk down a staircase. My heart makes a careful leap of relief when we reach the

second floor without being seen, just to be shattered again.

Right in front of us my eyes make out a tall muscular figure, guarding the exit which

would lead us out of here. He obviously has smelled us already; I can see it in the way

his body stiffens. He has olive skin. One of the very few in this pack who are not
white as a sheet due to the lack of sun, the malnourishment, and the cold weather here,

and I immediately know who he is.

“Shit,” I whisper, pulling Amaryllis behind me. “Don’t move.”

Fuck, I wish I could link her, but the shitface of an Alpha has put every Omega and

slave here under his Alpha command. The wolfsbane dulls our senses and wolves, and

his command further prevents us from communicating with each other through a mind

link. Goddess, I wish I could castrate him and his rotten offspring… and his sick

warriors.

The guard turns around, revealing his perfectly chiselled face. Arman is one of the

elite warriors of the pack. Both he and his sister Leila are very strong and capable, and

hold a certain status here… they are almost treated as if they were royals. He is so

breathtakingly beautiful. I hate this pack and its members, but I have to give credit

where credit is due, and this guy looks good. I curse myself for my thoughts because

I’m sure he won’t look that good anymore when he beats me and Amaryllis almost to

death for sneaking around.

“Lord Arman,” I stutter helplessly, not sure what to do. “We… we… lost our way. Is

that the way to the kitchen? We are on kitchen duty.”

Yeah, wow, smart Freya, really smart. Who the heck is supposed to believe that? The

kitchen is on the ground floor, this here is the second!

Just continue, Sereia says calmly.

WHAT!? I can’t believe what she just said. Arman is a freaking elite warrior. He is

easily the strongest male wolf here…aside from the Alpha. A punch from him might

kill Ryllis.

Trust me. Sereia urges.

I swallow deeply. I trust her, I do. But sometimes I wish I could see her face, to see

her expression. My wolf is just a voice, there is no ball of fur and fluff attached to her

like to Amaryllis’ wolf. Ryllis told me when she connected to her wolf at the

beginning, she was able to see her in her mind… then she got demoted to a slave, and

lost the connection.

Arman stares at us, his eyes have a rare shade of dark brown. He looks at me first,

then his gaze shifts to Amaryllis’ trembling form. Something flashes in his eyes,

something close to anger. Shit’s getting real soon.

I hold my breath, wondering how the hell I’m going to get the both of us out of here

alive, when Arman suddenly turns around again like he didn’t even see us.

I… what…

I take Amaryllis’ hand into mine and shuffle past him. I want to thank him for letting

us pass, for not making our situation worse, but I don’t want to test my luck. Before I

can walk by though, he grabs my arm.

Now it comes… he is going to break it, easily.

“Make sure she gets attended to in the infirmary,” he says without looking at us.

Wait… what? My confusion is growing. What the heck is going on? True, Arman

never participated in any parties the other warriors organized, he never had a slave

sent to his room. The other warriors sometimes even make fun of him for being

boring. They drop snide comments when they think he isn’t listening, too scared to

say anything to his face. I never crossed paths with him before, but this… comes as a

shock.

“That’s impossible,” I stutter. “Because…” My voice trails off, how am I going to

explain to him that she is not safe there right now.

His thick black brows furrow. “Then take her to her room. If anyone asks for her, tell

them I demanded her services.”

My eyes widen. “Are you… are you serious?”

“Tell them whatever you want to. They are not going to ask me about it anyway.”

“Thank you,” I whisper.

He snorts. “Don’t thank me,” he says bitterly. “It’s not like I’m doing anything. Now

go!”

I nod, tugging Amaryllis with me and hurrying downstairs, until we finally reach the

basement. The slaves are living there. We have our rooms here, tiny and without any

comfort, but at least it’s a place to sleep in. The other pack wolves feel too high and

mighty to step so low as to visit us down there, so at least no one bothers us.

“What happened!?” One of the male slaves yells in shock when he sees us. He is new

here, he just turned 18, and immediately got transferred to hell.

“They got Ryllis last night,” I blurt out. “I can’t take her to the infirmary.”

He nods, eyes wide in shock. As a guy, he is safer here than us girls, but it still comes

as a shock to him. “That’s… shit…”

“Emmanuel, get a grip – I need you to look for the boss and tell her what happened!

I’ll take her to her room and attend to her wounds in the meantime,” I explain. He

nods and runs off. Some girls surround us too now. “Cover for us, please.”

“Of course!” Gina, a sweet girl with curly hair nods. “I’ll take Ryllis’ shift.”

“And I'll cover for you,” another girl chimes in.

“Thank you, girls.”

“Of course!” they say with conviction. “If we don’t have each other, we don’t have

anything.”
“The first one who manages to run from this place, needs to make sure to get help and

then free everyone,” Gina mutters.

We sometimes dream of it, of escaping and bringing justice to everyone. But it’s just a

dream, and I doubt it will ever be reality. I’m not even sure how many of us will ever

grow old enough to make it past the age of 30, let alone see any change in the pack.

I doubt it will ever happen.

Chapter 5 Alpha Dickhead's little dingdong

2802 Words

*FREYA*

Some of the other girls brought me washcloths and some hot water to disinfect any

possible wounds Ryllis might be carrying. That’s the only good thing here in this

hell… the other girls and guys who share our fate. We all learned to stick together.

Emmanuel stuck to his word and informed our boss, as we playfully call her. In

reality, the elder woman is more like a mother to us than anything else.

“Freya?” I can hear her voice.

“Ludovica,” I call out, relieved. “In here, in Ryllis’ room.”

I’m so relieved to see her. She is a lot older than all of us, which is rare in itself.

Slaves and Omegas here don’t get particularly old. While Os do have a few more

rights than slaves, they are still quite low in the food-chain. They are not called for

sexual services usually and they live in a shabby building next to the packhouse, but

that's the only difference. Everything else we share. We aren't even considered real

pack members.

It’s a mixture of the incredibly cold weather, the constant snow here, the lack of

proper food and nutrition, and the abuse that sends us under the earth sooner than the

wolves of better rank. Also, we aren’t allowed to have any mates and reproduce.

Some slaves here might be used as sex toys, but everyone is on birth control. The

Alpha doesn’t want any weak blood in his pack babies.

Wolves normally don’t mind the cold, we have thick skin and high body heat, but we

just don’t receive enough food. Our wolves and bodies are weakened. It’s a pity

though because despite the cold weather the place here would be beautiful otherwise.

Blood Snow pack lies amidst two mountains, protected from both sides and opening

towards a huge forest, a stunning ice desert and the rough sea. On sunny days the

snow would sparkle like out of a winter fairy tale.

The place is fine.

It's the fellow wolves who make this place hell.

“Oh, you poor girl,” Ludovica enters the room with a bottle of aspirin in her hand. She

always collects this stuff from the garbage and saves them for emergencies. She

kneels down in front of me and Amaryllis, and carefully touches her face. There are

bruises around her neck, and I can see Ludovica’s eyes darkening.
She looks at me, and I shake my head. Since we can’t mind link, we learned to

communicate with our eyes instead. Ludovica wants to know if Amaryllis told me

anything, but unfortunately, she hasn’t said a word to me yet.

Ludovica squeezes my hand before turning her attention back to Amaryllis. “Don’t

worry, little flower. We’ll make sure you get better. You will rest for the next few

days, and we’ll cover for you.”

I nod eagerly. “I’ll take your shift!”

“You shouldn’t overwork yourself,” Amaryllis whispers, and my heart breaks at how

broken she sounds.

“I’m strong,” I say with conviction and mean it. My body is a bit stronger than the

others. “Oh, and you can have my blanket too.”

“Good,” Ludovica nods at me and kisses the top of my head. “Hurry and bring it

here.”

“But then she’ll be…” Ryllis shivers. “Cold at night…”

“I’ll snuggle up to one of the other girls,” I promise her, before I hurry out of the room

and to mine. The rooms are tiny, and we don’t have many personal possessions, but it

doesn’t matter, at least it’s our own space. I plan on grabbing the thin blanket from my

bed when my eyes fall on a basket placed in the middle of my room. I blink in

confusion. That’s not been here before. Peeking inside I see a first-aid kit… a real

one, not some meds from the trash or something one of the girls stole… there is also a

nice thick blanket. But… how…

There is a note sticking to it. I hope it helps.

Nothing more. I decide not to question it and hurry back to Ludovica. Amaryllis

comes first, everything else comes second. I hand Ludovica the items, noticing how
her eyes widen. I know what she wants to ask… she wants to know if I stole them. I

shake my head, I would never… it would pose too much of a risk. When I show her

the note, she looks at me confused but nods.

I help her attend to Amaryllis. There is a nasty bruise on her hips, probably a broken

rib too. We put a bandage around her middle, with actual medical supply this is so

much easier. There is also some medication in the box, to help against fever and pain.

Once Ludovica is done and Ryllis lies down, we cover her with the warm blanket.

“Ludovica,” I finally say, remembering what has happened before. “When I fetched

Ryllis… we bumped into Lord Arman.”

She looks at me questioningly. “He let you go?”

“Not only that, but he also told me to say he demands Ryllis’ services exclusively…

to cover for her.” I look at her nervously. “You think he is up to no good?”

“I don’t know,” she muses and looks at the box I brought to the room. “What did your

instincts tell you?”

“Sereia sent me his way actually,” I admit. She and Ryllis are the only ones who know

I still have my connection to my wolf.

She nods tentatively. “Arman and his sister Leila… you were still a baby when they

arrived here back then. They came by ship. There was an accident, and it wrecked. I

remember it…normally it would meant for them to be enslaved, but they were both of

Alpha blood, clearly, and even back then Leila was of incredible beauty. I have never

seen a child as beautiful as her. The Alpha immediately took a liking to both of them,

so his Beta took them in.”

“I know that,” I muse. “Why are you telling me this again?”

“It’s in their eyes,” she says tentatively. “The look of disgust in Arman’s eyes when

he looks at his fellow warriors. And the way Leila keeps everyone at arm’s length.

They never talk to anyone.”

“You mean to say they think this fucking pack is as shit as we think it is?” I ask

bluntly.

She smacks my leg softly. “We talked about all your cursing, didn’t we?” I grin at her,

making her pinch her nose. “I think he and Leila are stuck here, and try to hang on

until they find a way out of it,” she says simply. “So, in a way, they might be stuck

here the same way we are stuck here. Well, not exactly the same.”

“Yeah,” I say dryly. “They live in luxury.”

“Leila is a very beautiful woman though,” Ludovica muses. “I wonder how she makes

sure the sleazy warriors don’t touch her.”

“Her brother is probably scary enough,” I say. “And she is the oracle for a reason.”

Ever since her gift surfaced, she is treated like an actual princess and priestess. It's the

reason the pack started to address her and Arman so formally. From what I heard she

can receive visions.

“She sometimes gives me food,” Ludovica admits. “Stuff I then hand to you guys.

The extra potatoes from last week… she gave them to me.”

My eyes widen. “You never said anything!”

“Because news travels fast,” Ludovica says. “I tell you because I trust you, but you

can’t tell anyone else. She is probably endangering her life too.”

That’s interesting news, and it’s good to know that at least a very few other people

aren’t happy with what’s going on here. Leila and Arman are powerful and important
for this pack, though I have no doubt the Alpha would get rid of them if he knew. But

sometimes only a spark is needed to ignite a fire.

When I want to leave, Amaryllis grabs my hand. “Stay with me?” she begs.

I look at Ludovica, and she nods. “Stay an hour, Freya. We can cover for you that

long.”

I smile in relief, crawling into the bed next to Amaryllis and pulling her close. “Don’t

worry, sweetheart. You are my family, the little sister I never had. I will protect you,”

I mutter into her hair. The medicine and the warmth of the blanket work miracles and

I can feel her dozing off eventually. When it’s time for me to leave, I plant a soft kiss

to her forehead and tuck her into the blanket properly before sneaking out of the

room.

I’m taking over one of Ryllis’ shifts, and she is supposed to be on kitchen duty. It’s a

job I actually like doing as it means working with some other slaves, and Ludovica is

there too. Unless we aren’t harassed by pack members, it’s the best job. I quietly

sneak upstairs and into the huge kitchen. Ludovica sees me entering and gestures

towards a bowl of vegetables. I give her a curt nod and a smile before grabbing the

bowl and going to work, like I was there all the time for the whole shift.

“So,” Emmanuel finishes peeling the potatoes. “Today all the warriors were in

training. So, who else thinks leftovers will be like three steamed carrots for us?”

We all giggle.

“And half of a potato,” Gina adds.

“Oh goddess, don’t go overboard,” Emmanuel gasps. “I need to watch my weight.”

We all giggle again.

“Shhh,” Ludovica makes, she looks both amused and sad. “Don’t let them hear you.

I’ll make sure you get something to eat later.” She looks at us. “When the warriors

come and we serve them, I want all girls below the age of 22 down in the basement.

Freya can stay, Emmanuel too. Send some of the older girls and guys upstairs.”

We all nod in unison. No one wants to cross the warrior's’ path here and become their

prey. The more innocent and younger they are, the more the men are interested in

them. It’s truly gross. We all continue to work in silence before Ludovica starts to

send some girls downstairs and others appear to take over. She always says: better

safe than sorry.

“Finished,” I exclaim. “I can start preparing the plates.”

“Just in time,” Ludovica praises me. “The Alpha eats in his suite today. I’ll bring him

his food. But his son is here.”

The young Alpha, Dickhead as I call him, though his real name is Benjamin, is a

spoiled man-child, a rotten piece of trash. No surprise though, considering how his

father raised him to believe he was the goddess’s gift to any woman, and superior to

all other beings.

Everyone looks at each other nervously, and I sigh. “I can serve him. He is still scared

of me, and I don’t even know why.”

“Oh, I know…” Emmanuel grins. “Heard the windows burst and one of the shards got

stuck very close to his little dingdong.”

I press my hand to my mouth not to giggle too loud.

“How did you even do that?” one of the girls whispers.

“I still don’t think it was me,” I admit. “You know I can’t shift and don’t have any

gifts.”
“Yeah but…” they look at each other sceptically before Ludovica interrupts them.

“Let’s leave it at that,” she commands. I know why she does it, she doesn’t want too

much attention on me and on what happened back there. I’m surprised the Alpha

didn’t kill me back then, when he found out what happened. He just punched me into

the infirmary, but other than that claimed it was a coincidence.

Maybe he is just too arrogant to believe he could have been wrong about his decision

when demoting me to a slave. Ludovica strongly believes his ignorance is a gift in this

case and we should lay low. Dickhead however will have his birthday in a few days

and turn 18, which will give him even more power in this pack. Exactly what we

need, a sociopath leading alongside his sociopath father.

“I’m not his type anyway,” I interrupt the others who are still discussing the issue,

while taking the biggest plate in my hands and another one for his insufferable best

friend. “Anyone wants to spit on it?” I ask.

Emmanuel grins while the other giggles. Ludovica shakes her head and smiles at us.

“Now get moving, my sweeties.”

We all nod, the others take their plates too and we start to shuffle into the huge dining

room. Dickhead glares at me when I approach him, so does his future Beta with his

pea-sized brain. I put on my usual poker face though, not showing them an ounce of

fear or emotion.

“The psycho bitch,” one of Dickhead’s warrior friends snarls at me. “Why do we

always end up with her!?”

I ignore him completely, just flash him a smile and put his plate in front of him. My

smile apparently seemed to scare him more than anything else.

Goddess, I wish I remembered what happened that day when they wanted to force

themselves on me!

Sereia, can’t you remember?

She remains suspiciously quiet.

You can!?

Not really, she finally answers. Freya, if I had actual answers, I would give them to

you, but while I might remember what happened that day, I don’t know why it did.

When everyone has their plates in front of them, Dickhead glares at me. “Get lost

now!”

“I don’t know why your father hasn’t killed her, Benji,” one of the guys says.

“Maybe she is a witch,” another snarls. “She has green eyes after all!”

Wow… Sereia’s voice trails off, even she seems to be speechless by that much

ideocracy.

Probably read it in one of his old children’s books, I tell her.

I doubt he even read it, she concludes dryly. Probably just looked at the pictures.

It’s true that I have green eyes, and while my hair is not fiery red, it’s clearly a

mixture between blonde and red, other than that I’m pale like a sheet and have the

freaking complexion of a ghost. Also, I wouldn’t say I’m blessed with luscious

curves. I don’t even remotely fit into the cliché image of a witch. So, unfortunately,

I’m not a witch, or I would have enchanted them to make sure they would never be

able to raise their dingdongs again.

“Yeah,” another dude chimes in. “Maybe that’s why the Alpha let her off so easily.”

“I’m honoured,” I say with a warm voice.

Dickhead and his following stare at me, like I lost my mind. “What did you just say?”

he spats out.

“But Alpha Benjamin,” I smile sweetly at him. “Your friend just claimed I might be

powerful enough to have enchanted your father! Our powerful and strong Alpha.” I

clasp my cheeks in mock embarrassment. “I don’t know how I deserve such praise.

Enchanting the Alpha…”

Dickhead is so stupid, he completely forgets it’s me who he is talking to and instead

shifts his attention to his insufferable friend. “How dare you hint that my father would

be manipulated by a witch!”

I carefully sneak away while I can watch a fight breaking out at the Alpha’s table.

Some other warriors jump up from their places to pull the guys apart. When I come

back to the kitchen, Emmanuel stares at me, impressed. “Wow!” he says.

“How do you even do that?” one of the girls whispers in awe.

“She isn’t afraid of them,” Ludovica explains quietly. “And that’s what scares these

guys the most. Take a break now, everyone, I’ve got some bread left from this

morning. Go and eat it, before we need to collect the plates.”

Chapter 6 Road Trip
3081 Words

*FINN*

My father and I chose a car that would make it through a snowy path easily, so at least

we should arrive at Blood Snow without any troubles. The way to the north is long,

and travelling by car makes it longer than usual. The better and faster way would be to

arrive by ship, but it’s too risky of a choice for us. Besides, taking the car will give us
time to bond further during this road trip.

Soon I realize, the shitty weather, the awful snowy road, and the icy surface aren’t the

problem. The problem is the kindergarteners I’m driving around!

The plan was to have Marcel sit next to me as he is the only one aside from myself

who can read a map properly. To be safe we switched off our cell phones, so that we

won’t be able to be tracked, and rely on the old-fashioned method of finding our way

with an actual map.

However, one hour into our drive the two sets of twins are still arguing, so I had to

separate them. I asked Marcel to sit behind me with the map, Steve and Elise next to

him, while Elodie took the passenger seat. Anthony and Henry remain in the second

row of seats.

This is like primary school, for real. The pups in our nursery are more mature than

them! I’m just lucky that neither Steve nor Marcel emit an overly dominant attitude,

or we would be in real trouble. Both of them are rather striving for harmony and try to

avoid too many conflicts, which is why we make the next few hours of our drive in

relative peace.
Before we left, my mother provided us with a potion she got from an entrusted witch.

It’ll give us the ability to mind link each other. She further handed Henry, Anthony

and me a potion that would dim our aura a bit, so that no one could feel our Alpha

status. Honestly, of all the preparations and help I received during the last months, this

was probably the greatest thing my family came up with.

Marcel, I link my kind-hearted navigator. Are you alright?

Just fantastic, he snorts. But if we stop to pee, and I accidentally forget one of the

twins, don’t blame me.

That would be a fantastic plan. I grin. How are we going to do it?

Stop for gas? He offers. And then send one pair inside to buy some snacks. If it’s on

me I'd rather keep the girls, they seem to have some useful gifts and are cute. But at

this point, I honestly don’t mind.

I grin to myself at his words. I try to believe everyone will try their hardest once we

reach our destination, but I need to make sure we stop beforehand to tell them once

more that I can’t accept any slip-ups.

A single mistake might cost our lives, or worse, the lives of innocent pack members.

We have been driving for a few hours, the scenery changing constantly until more and

more green is replaced with the white of the snow. Eventually we take a break and

stay the night in a little motel. Fortunately everyone, including my insolent twins, is

too tired to complain about the lack of luxury. Marcel and I plan on driving the whole

next day and probably stay overnight at one more place before we will reach Blood

Snow. Though I honestly hope we'll make it there in one day. I don't want to waste

anymore time.
The linear distance to Blood Snow isn’t that far away, but unfortunately we have to

drive around a few mountains which makes our way longer than it would be with a

helicopter or even with ship.

The next day starts like the previous one with quite some bickering and complaints.

At least Steve seems to be in a good mood. “Would you show me how to read a

map?” he asks Marcel when we all meet for breakfast. “How can you and Finn so

easily calculate the distances?”

“I will show you,” Marcel smiles.

“I’d be interested too,” Elise points out to my surprise. “Would you mind Chocolate

Prince?”

“Not at all Milky Way Princess,” Marcel grins, and soon she and Steve bend their

heads over the map while Marcel explains to them how to read it properly.

As usual my two problem children aren’t interested in anything. Elodie however

seems to do her own research and types something on her phone. “I want to get one

message to Prince Eric,” she tells me. “As long as we still can. Would that be okay,

Finn?”

“Of course,” I nod. “Go ahead. Once you’re done, switch your phone off again

though.”

She nods, a frown on her face as she swiftly types something. Once she is done, she

switches it off and puts it back into her pocket. Then she continues to sip at her coffee.

“Not a morning person,” she mutters towards me.

I snort. “I can sympathize.”

“Me too,” Anthony yawns. “I just hate getting up.”

Elodie frowns a bit. It seems like she is annoyed that they share something, but to my

relief she doesn’t provoke him. It’s the first somewhat normal conversation one of the

twins had with the others. Maybe there is hope.

Once we wrap up our breakfast, I make sure to get them all going. “We have a long

way ahead of us,” I tell them once we step outside and everyone climbs into the car.

The air is fresh and much colder already, the climate here obviously different to the

one at home.

For the first time the severity of my mission feels real. I’m truly going to do this. So

many people are relying on me and trusting me with this. I grab the necklace my

friends gifted me with, and take a deep breath. It’s not a matter of can or want

anymore. Max and I need to do this right. Failure is not an option.

“Are you ready?” Marcel peeks out of the car.

“Sure,” I smile and sit down behind the wheel. “Just enjoyed the fresh air.”

“You enjoy the freezing temperatures?” Henry asks in disbelief.

I shrug. “I don’t mind. I’m training a lot, it helps to keep me warm.” I couldn’t help

the little jab at the twins, well aware that they are quite lazy about their training.

Nice one, Marcel links me with a grin.

Once I drive off and we are back on the road, I link Marcel again, asking him to talk

with the others to loosen the slightly strained atmosphere. Soon he, Elise and Steve

talk about their favorite movies.

“I like action movies,” Steve tells us. “I know, I know,” he grins. “Cliché.”

“I like them too,” Marcel agrees, turning a bit to eye the boys. “And you?”

To my surprise Anthony indeed answers. “I like SciFi,” he admits. “Oh, and fantasy

movies, but action is fine too.”

“Have you seen the last MCU movie?” Steve asks him.

Anthony grins. “Of course! I’ve seen them all.”

“Who’s your favorite?” Steve wants to know.

“Tony Stark,” he says. “Oh, and I love the guardians.”

“Great choice,” Steve grins. “Deadpool is pretty cool too.”

I listen to them, feeling relieved that they seem to share a common interest. Henry

however remains awfully quiet, and just glares a bit at his brother. Eventually Steve’s

and Anthony’s talk dies down, and Marcel skilfully shifts the topic to something else.

When I look into my rearview mirror, I notice Henry’s and Anthony’s eyes glossing

over, and soon Anthony’s stance gets tensed up more. He stops participating in the

conversation of the others and instead keeps staring out of the window again.

Awesome. He was just starting to warm up. What the heck did Henry tell him now?

At least we manage to pass the next few hours without any arguments.

“At the next junction, we need to drive left,” Marcel tells me while opening the map

fully. Steve helps him by spreading it further across his body and holding it up.

I frown when I check the road in front of us. If we turn left, we need to drive over the

tiniest road I’ve ever seen, directly towards a mountain. “You sure?”

“Absolutely,” Marcel nods. “There is no other path. If we don’t drive this way, we

need to drive to the harbour and take a boat instead.”

I nod. “Alright. We’ll stop at that small diner a bit further down the road, eat

something and gather our strengths, then we’ll continue.”

“Stopping for gas too?” Marcel asks sweetly.

I grin. “You bet.”

The diner is nothing special, but it’s cosy and emits a nice atmosphere. The owner is a

middle-aged couple who are used to serving passerbys, who aren’t used to the cold.

They have a fitting menu for those who need to warm up a bit. I thank the goddess for

our werewolf abilities, which makes it easier for us not to feel cold, but still… even

with our warm-blooded bodies, it’s obvious how chilling the air is.

“Does the sun ever come out here?” I ask the old lady curiously. I was on my best

behaviour when I introduced myself to her, being overly polite. I know that my looks

can scare people off, especially humans. Tattoos and piercings are something not

everyone likes to see. I’m aware of that, but wouldn’t change my look nevertheless.

She laughs. “Of course it does, silly,” she says warmly, obviously not minding my

little rocker look. “Last week the weather was awful with more snowfall than usual,

but when the sun comes out, you’ll be rewarded with the most beautiful landscape

ever,” she promises.

“But the snow always remains?” Steve asks curiously. He never travelled far, and I

realize being in a completely new climate might be new and interesting for him.

“Yes, sweetheart,” she chuckles. “We do have days in summer when the snow is

mostly gone though.”

“But how do you grow vegetables?” he continues to ask.

Anthony and Henry look at each other and roll their eyes. “Ever heard of greenhouses,

Steven!?” Henry taunts him while emphasizing his name to ridicule him.

I can notice Marcel’s frown, while Steve himself blushes. “Sorry,” he stutters. “That

was a stupid question.”

“Not at all,” the old lady smiles at him. “You are a curious young man, that’s very

commendable. And we don’t only use greenhouses here,” she explains. “But we have
cultivated a certain number of vegetables that can grow in winter. Potatoes for

example.”

Steve looks relieved at her words, and smiles while she explains to him how it’s

done.

“Can’t we finally eat!?” Henry complains.

Elodie – thank goddess for the dog and cat pendants or I would never be able to tell

them apart – glares at him. “Why? Are you scared we forgot about you?”

Elise giggles. “Believe me, we will never forget you.”

Anthony wiggles his eyebrows at her. “Oh, is that so?”

“That’s good to know,” Henry says.

“It’s not meant as a compliment, dumbass,” Elodie huffs.

Before Elise can join her, I link both girls. Please, don’t.

They are- one of the girls starts, and in my mind, it’s impossible to tell them apart.

-insufferable!

I know, I agree. And I will talk to them about it. But we can’t start ripping each other

apart a day into our journey.

You are the boss Finn, both girls say, surprisingly serious. You can count on us. We

won’t embarrass you or disappoint you. But these idiots apparently think they are on

a school trip.

I frown, she is right. We all prepared months for this trip and mission, and I made sure

everyone involved had all the details and intel. I know that Steve and Marcel read

through all the information – one of their pack members, their Gamma’s mate, was

originally from Blood Snow pack, an orphan who managed to rise through the ranks

through a competition, and eventually was able to leave once he found his mate. I’m
well aware that both men talked to him as much as possible to gather their own

information.

Elodie and Elise visited me plenty of times beforehand. Despite their silly attitude

sometimes, they are professionals. My cousin Eric is a Lycan Prince of the Council,

and these two are his advisors. Eric would never choose a bunch of idiots for such a

job. He trusts them.

But with Anthony and Henry I’m starting to wonder if they even read the folder I

handed them, or listened to one single word I said.

I look at the girls insistently, and nod towards them. I understand where you are

coming from. But I need you to stop provoking them when we are there. I need your

help to keep them under control.

Don’t worry, we’ll have your back. One of them says. What if they act out though or

sabotage the mission?

Then I’ll send them back home, I say evenly.

You would do that?

Absolutely! Too many lives are at risk – I need them to keep in line or they can go

home. I won’t accept any failure!

The twins exchange a gaze and nod at me contently.

Meanwhile, the old lady started to tell us what she can serve us today. They have quite

some stews and hot pots.

“Are we on a very tight schedule?” Elise asks. “If we only have like twenty minutes, I

would go for something that’s ready fast, but if not…

“I want everyone to regain their strength, because our second part of the drive will be

long and we don’t even know if we can drive the whole way. We might even stay the

night here, if that's possible.” I look at the old lady, who nods eagerly.

"If you want to stay, we have a few rooms for spontaneous guests."

I smile thankfully before turning my attention back to Elise. “See. Order whatever you

want!”

The girls look at each other excitedly. “The hot pot-“ Elise starts.

“-for us, please,” Elodie continued.

“With extra potatoes,” they add in unison.

“I can also make it a bit spicier,” the lady smiles. “It will warm you up further. How

about the curry hot pot?”

“Yes!” they both beam.

Steve and I both go for stew with a lot of meat in it, while Marcel goes for the fish hot

pot, also spicy.

My two problem children grimace a bit at his choice. “Don’t you have any burgers?”

Henry grumbles with distaste.

“No, honey,” the lady says. “We adapted our menu to what our customers ordered the

most, for it to fit the cold.”

Henry glares, obviously ready to throw a hissy fit over not getting his burgers. Before

he can do so I interrupt him, looking at him sharply. “We are happy with everything

you have!”

Don’t piss me off further, and just order, I tell him, annoyed.

For the first time Henry looks a bit unsure.

“We’ll take the creamy chicken stew with rice,” Anthony finally orders for the both of

them.

I can see how Elodie is about to say something to Henry, but to my surprise, she

tenses her fingers instead, takes a deep breath and says nothing. I’m glad to know that

they indeed stick to what they just told me. One problem less to worry about.

The old lady seems to have taken a liking to Steve, as his stew looks particularly rich

and tasty, and she serves extra rice for him too.

“Are you playing favourites?” Marcel asks with a grin.

For a split second, I’m scared of another conflict. To my surprise, the lady just

chuckles. “My,” she says. “Another hungry young man.” She winks. “I might have

some extra bread for your fish stew too.”

“I’m so close to starting to call you mom,” Marcel beams.

She snorts. “You bunch are the funniest guests I ever had. I’ll make sure to remember

you.”

“We like you too,” I point out with a smile, and mean it. She has been so nice to us.

“Are you all flirting with my wife?” the old man, obviously her husband, hollers from

the back of the kitchen.

“Ah, you,” she laughs. “Allow your old woman some fun with these young

gentlemen.”

I watch them interact for a while, noticing that for a split second I feel this anxiety in

me again, this sad feeling of maybe never finding my soulmate, of always being

alone, and never having my mate at my side. I wish to have what they have… grow

old with my mate, love her to the best of my ability.

To my surprise, Max uses this moment to trot into my mind. He was asleep for most

of the drive to the diner, but now he seems to be awake. We’ll find her, he promises.

The goddess has a plan for us too. She is definitely not leaving me without a mate to

cuddle with. He stretches and yawns a bit.

I’m amused that the first thought he has is to cuddle his mate in his sleep, my lazy

Lycan, but what he said indeed motivates me a bit and pulls me out of my self-

destructive thoughts. He is right, the goddess has a plan for us, we just don’t know yet

what it’ll entail.

Chapter 7 Carnival
4730 Words

*FINN*

Equipped with some snacks for the way, a bunch of sandwiches the old couple

prepared for us, tea and coffee we get going again the next morning. This time we
indeed take the road Marcel told me to take, it leads us over a very bumpy snowy

road, and I thank the goddess for having four-wheel drive and snow chains.

“If we die here, no one will ever find us,” Anthony deadpans.

And for once I agree with him. “Yeah,” I mutter, while carefully manoeuvring the car

over the narrow passage. To my left there is a mountain, like a wall between us and

the rest of the world, to my right there is a steep slope leading down to an icy lake.

“We should definitely not land there.”

“According to the map, this is the worst passage though,” Marcel points out. “We

should reach a better road soon. It will lead us to a forest.”

I carefully drive past a cliff, noting how slippery the road is. “Not like we can turn

around anyway,” I mutter. The only good thing is that everyone is so nervous that

they forget to quarrel with each other. There is an upside to everything.

True to Marcel’s words we eventually make it past the nerve-wracking passage and

indeed reach a mountain ridge, leading us downwards again and through a forest.

Better, much better, I think with a major sigh of relief.

“In around half an hour we should reach a clearing. There is supposed to be more

space there,” Marcel concludes.

“We can take a break there,” I point out. “I think we can all do with one after that hell

of a ride up here.”

“Yeah,” Henry says. “Not exactly the type of ride I prefer.”

Elodie rolls her eyes at his dirty comment but remains quiet nevertheless.

I drive slowly, giving us all the time to check our surroundings. We just passed the

steep mountain path, leaving it behind us. The whole area is covered in thick snow.

Whatever the old lady in the diner told us about the snow melting in summer, I
wonder if this also goes for this place… I’m sure the snow here in the forest at least is

permanent.

However, the weather cleared up a bit, revealing a beautiful landscape in front of us.

The snow covers most of it, but it does look breath-taking in its own way. I’ve never

been a fan of summers, so I’m kind of glad that our mission led us to the north.

Going by our estimated time and the fact that we drive slowly and take breaks, it’s

going to be two hours more until we reach Blood Snow pack.

Time to call out to my wolf.

Max? I think we are going to be close soon. I need you to be on alert.

My wolf growls, grunts and snorts, like I just woke him up from the deepest slumber.

The image of him lying on his back pops up in my mind, all legs stretched away from

him, his feet moving slightly, while he looks around distraught for being woken up.

There is drool running out his mouth.

Are you really just drooling in my mind? I deadpan.

He looks slightly embarrassed. I just hunted for that deer in my mind, and it was d-e-

l-i-c-i-o-u-s! And human, you are not supposed to disturb me in these private

moments! I don’t watch you either when you take a dump or do whatever you do in

your shower!

To watch me it would require you to be awake, I state dryly. So, are you done playing

Sleeping Beauty?

I am, he stretches, showing me his silly grin. I’m starting to feel a bit giddy.

That’s new. My fun and nice but lazy-ass wolf is normally not motivated by anything.

What for?
Not sure, but there is something in the air. He stretches his snout upwards. Something

exciting is going to happen!

I hope it’s not going to be a fight, I mutter. The last thing we need is to get into a trap

and need to defend ourselves against a whole pack.

Don’t worry, I’m strong, he says with confidence.

Despite his lazy attitude, he is indeed right. He might be my own personal couch-

potato wolf, but he and I trained a lot, and my father helped me to connect with him

on a deeper level. He has never not had my back – and he is a great fighter. He just

sometimes needs me to poke him a bit to wake up.

Thanks, I say. Just don’t go to sleep for now.

I won’t. He looks excited. Can’t sleep now anyway.

True to Marcel’s previous words we reach a clearing soon, it looks well used,

apparently, the pack members use it to take breaks here too when they drive up here.

The moment I halt, the others scramble out of the car, relieved to be able to stretch

their limbs after the last hours of driving through that path of horror.

“Using a ship doesn’t sound too bad, looking back at it now,” Elodie mutters.

“I think it’s a matter of habit,” Marcel muses. “The more often you drive this path, the

easier it gets. You’ll just get used to it.”

“There is no way I’ll ever want to drive here again,” Elodie says, turning her head

slightly to look at her twin sister. “What’s wrong? You are so quiet?”

“It’s nothing, just… it’s really freezing,” Elise shakes her head a bit. “Stupid me for

leaving my scarf at the bottom of my bag.”

Steve looks at her in worry, taking his scarf off and handing it to her. “You can have

mine meanwhile. I’m not feeling cold.”

Elise looks genuinely surprised. “You might need it too.”

“No, I’m okay.”

She smiles. “Thank you.”

He beams at her and wraps the scarf around her. Due to their difference in size and

height, his scarf is pretty big too, covering half of Elise’s upper body. “Thank you,

Steve,” she repeats and sounds genuine. “That was very nice!”

“Good thing you have so many muscles and are so strong,” Elodie jumps in, clearly

pleased that he just helped her sister out. “Keeps you warm.” She clearly talks to his

ego now, to boost his confidence, and it works, because Steve indeed blushes a bit and

looks a bit proud.

“I’m just a normal guy,” he stutters.

Elodie chuckles. “With these muscles? Steve, you are strong!”

“Why are you so shy?” Elise smiles. “You could easily be a lady’s killer.”

Steve looks flustered. “I just don’t want to be a jerk,” he admits. “I have two sisters

and would hate it if any of them ended up with a Casanova.”

Elodie and Elise exchange a gaze, clearly liking what they hear. “Don’t worry Steve,”

Elodie smirks. “We’ll introduce you to some girls!”

“Yes,” Elise beams. “Plenty of girls are into nice, hot guys!”

They compliment him a bit more, and it’s so cute to watch. Steve has zero experience

with girls, it’s just so obvious, but he is natural and genuine, and a lot of girls really

like that about a guy. Out of the corner of my eyes, I can see the twins looking

annoyed though.

Obviously so.

Elodie and Elise would probably rather drop dead than compliment them on anything.
I let everyone attend their own businesses for a few more minutes while scanning the

area. This time I use my gift, allowing my eyes to roam over everything to take up any

aura of a living being that might be close enough. All I can feel though are a few deer

and snow rabbits.

I let out a sigh of relief and call my team. “This is probably the last time we can talk

freely. Once we leave from here, we’ll need to use our mind links,” I point out,

signalling for Marcel to spread the map for us all to look at.

He explains the whole area to us, the exact location of the pack, how we’ll arrive and

other information he managed to gather.

“From what we heard Blood Snow is a very rough and dangerous pack,” I point out

earnestly. “I told you already that we believe they are enslaving their pack members.

We’ve heard of how bad orphans are treated. Officially we are all young warriors or

heirs to a ranked pack member, coming to visit and learn more about other packs.

Recently an exchange program was established for young warriors and heirs to a rank

to take a look at different packs and train with their allies. This will be our cover too.

Don’t forget, they think we are all from the same pack. Alpha Jace, who is Anthony’s

and Henry’s father, will cover for us. He has never had any direct meetings with

Blood Snow, so they don’t know a thing about him. So officially we are all from

Emerald Moon.” I look at the twins in particular. “We are not heirs to an Alpha

though! We are solely connected to a strong Beta family.”

“Will they believe this?” Elise wants to know. “You are pretty strong and tall, Finn.

You look like an Alpha.”

Elodie throws the twins a dirty gaze. “And they scream Alpha too, particularly due to

their attitude.”
“That’s why we had the potion my mother gave us. It will tone down our auras to

others,” I point out. “We need to stick to being Betas, officially. I made up a story that

my father is the current Beta, and I’m half Lycan. This pack does not have many

connections to the outside, so they have no idea what a Lycan truly looks like and

what aura we have.” I turn to the twins. “Did you think of a story too?”

Henry just shrugs, while Anthony at least has the decency to look embarrassed. I’m

starting to feel annoyed by them. This is not a school trip we are on! “We are here to

save lives,” I emphasize. “You’ll both be elite warriors. You are young, and strong.

This should work.” I turn to look at the others. “Marcel?”

“Warrior,” he says. “It’s the easiest. You are right, our contacts told us they don’t

know much about outsiders. If a guy like you pretends to be a Beta, and Anthony and

Henry are supposed to be elite warriors, I need to pretend to be of lower rank, or it

won’t be believable. I’ll tell them I’m currently polishing my skills as a tracker.”

“Good,” I nod contently. “Steve?”

“Gamma’s heir,” he points out. “I talked to my sisters about it. It was their idea.”

“Fantastic! You have that nice aura about you, yet you are strong.” I turn to the girls.

“And you?”

“We are going to lay it low,” Elise says seriously. “I heard things about this pack, and

they don’t hold women in high regard. Elodie and I will pretend to be your cousins,

Finn. You’ll claim to be the Beta’s son, making you a high-ranking pack member, so

we’ll be your assistants, servants if you want to.”

Elodie nods. “If anyone asks what we do for a living… we are no warriors, we are

nurses.”
“This will give you the chance to take a look at the infirmary,” I say, impressed. They

will be able to snoop at places we guys won’t easily get to.

“Can we repeat all of that?” Steve asks, rubbing over his head a bit. “I… I want to

make sure not to mess up. I’m not sure if I caught every detail now.”

Before I can even say anything, Henry smirks. “For real? Okay, Steve… we’ll talk

very slowly so that you can understand it too.”

Anthony laughs at his words.

This was a low blow, and they are well aware of it. Stevie pretends he hasn’t heard

anything, but I can see the hurt in his eyes. Marcel glances at me, he looks angry.

Elise stares at them in sheer disbelief. “Oh really,” she frowns. “You think you guys

are in a place to judge someone?”

“You apparently think we are on a school trip,” Elodie adds, sounding completely fed

up. “Are you aware that people in this pack might be dying? Girls are getting raped,

children abused, slaves beaten! You are-”

“Elodie, Elise,” I interrupt them before they can say anything else. “We are short on

time. Could you two call home and tell everyone we’ll arrive at our destination

shortly. I don’t know if we can talk with my father anytime soon.”

Elodie catches the hint. “Sure,” she says, taking her sister’s hand. “Come Elise.”

“Marcel and Steve, please scout the area to make sure no one is watching us.”

I know no one is watching us, but it doesn’t matter. I just need everyone to get away

for now. Marcel catches on immediately and nods. “Sure Finn.” He waves at Steve,

signalling him to come along.

I know some of the younger guys in Moon Blood say that Steve isn’t the smartest guy,

I also know he had a few troubles keeping up in school, but he is kind, loyal and
empathic, and he is not stupid! I’m beyond thankful to have him with me on this

journey, because he is reliable and a good friend. He makes a real effort to be of use

on this mission, he listens well and makes sure not to blow our cover, he actually did

his homework, unlike the other two idiots!

I wait for the other four to be away before I turn to the twins.

“What!?” Henry grumbles. “You know he isn’t the brightest bulb.”

I frown. “And you can tell that after the two minutes you spent actually talking to

him?”

“Come one, it’s obvious he is a bit slower,” Anthony points out.

“You know what…” I furrow my brows at them, feeling my wolf stirring inside me.

I’m normally very controlled, but now I’m pissed. “The only reason I let your

disrespectful words towards Steve slide before was because I didn’t want him to feel

even more humiliated by making a scene out of it. But if I hear another word from one

of you towards him, I’ll send you straight back home.”

They stare at me in surprise.

“Do you think Steve is below you?” I huff. “Because as of now I can rely on him far

more than on either of you!”

“How can you talk to us like that,” Henry hisses. “We are the future Alphas of-“

“Like I give a shit,” I growl. “I’m also an Alpha’s son, and I’m as much of a Lycan as

you are, and you have been wasting so much potential during the last years, that you

are no match for me, even though you are firstborn children to a Lycan and I’m not. I

don’t give a shit about who your father is and what kind of position he holds. If I call

him now and tell him you guys act out and sabotage us, what do you think he’ll do!?”
Alpha Jace is an old friend of my father, and I've known him since I was a baby. I

know for a fact that he would be pissed beyond the moon if he knew how his sons

acted. Henry and Anthony seem to think the same because they retreat slightly.

“And because rank matters so much to you,” I tell them, ready to give them the final

blow. “Steve happens to come from a very powerful Beta family. His father is an elite

warrior. One of his sisters is the Beta of Moon Blood, his other sister is a Luna… she

is Liam’s mate. Remember, my brother?”

Anthony stares at me, eyes wide. “Wait… Luna Annalise is his sister!?” He looks at

Henry who just glares at him and turns away a bit.

Well, seems like I at least managed to get through to one of them… at least a bit.

Anthony was always a bit more… mellow in comparison to Henry. I have no idea

where Henry’s hardness comes from, but I have no time now to dive into the reasons

for his attitude. He either sucks it up or leaves.

I grab the map to fold it, glaring at them. “So, either try to do something useful for

once and check if our car is set to go through the snow again, or just step aside and

don’t disturb anyone in our team!”

Anthony seems to feel torn, while Henry puts his stubborn face back on. I leave them

alone for now, not wanting to deal with them, but out of the corner of my eye I can

see how Anthony begrudgingly walks towards the car. Henry turns away from him

and walks in the other direction, sitting down at one of the benches and sulking.

I swear. If I find my mate now, we can have children in an instant. I’m ready! Can’t

be any worse than these two!

I ignore them for now and hurry to find Steve and Marcel. They didn’t get far,

because Marcel was obviously aware I just wanted a moment with the insolent twins.
“Don’t say anything Finn,” Steve sighs, looking depressed. “I know they are right.

I’m not intelligent.”

“Don’t let these two jealous losers get to you,” Marcel growls.

“Why should they be jealous?” Steve blinks.

“Because Elodie and Elise talked to you and took a liking to you,” I explain. “You and

Anthony and Henry are of similar age. They feel threatened by you.”

“But still… I know I don’t bring much to the table,” Steve admits. “I have the least

experience here and I have no special rank.”

“Steve,” Marcel interrupts him. “You were chosen for this journey because Alpha

Celine believes in you, hell, everyone believes in you! Alpha Celine wanted Finn to

have a reliable ally. They are not sending just any idiot on the trip, Steve, and damn it,

if you hadn’t asked to go through the details of everyone’s covers again, I would have.

You and I were handpicked to join this mission. Elodie and Elise were sent by the

freaking Council itself to support us. The twins however were chosen because –

capable or not – they need an attitude adjustment!”

His words seem to have raised Steve’s spirit. “Is that true?” He looks at Marcel first,

then at me.

I nod. “You and Marcel were the first ones to be picked for this,” I tell him. “Celine

said you are ambitious and strong, and ready to prove yourself. She has faith in you.

And when she told me about her choice, I felt relieved. I’m glad to have someone

around I can rely on.”

“You prepared well for this trip,” Marcel adds.

“Yeah, but the story I came up with… the one about being a Gamma’s heir, I only

was able to do it with my sisters’ help and-“

Marcel and I chuckle. “And you think we didn’t talk to anyone?”

“I discussed my cover for weeks,” I say. “With my father, with my brothers, with my

closest friends.”

“Same,” Marcel admits.

“You have nothing to feel inferior about,” I tell him earnestly. “Take it from your

brother-in-law. You know I would tell you if you messed up in any way. So, rest

reassured: You didn’t. You’re doing very well!”

Steve takes a deep breath, smiling at us. “Thanks, you two.”

“Now let’s get going,” I stretch a bit. “Ready or not, we need to get going.”

When we all return to the car, I’m surprised to see that Anthony just wrapped up

checking the wheels. Elise even helps him and holds some of the screws. I look at

Elodie, raising my brows, as she approaches us. She shrugs a bit. “You know what

they say: Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.”

When I look at her in confusion she shrugs. “Anthony seems to be into cars, he works

on them regularly. Nothing special – everyone has some sort of hobby or hidden

talent.” She pauses. “My sister likes motorcycles.”

“Cool,” Steve states. He is so nice and forgiving, it sometimes breaks my heart. “I

didn’t know that Anthony and Elise know so much about cars.”

Elodie sighs slightly but doesn’t say anything else. She really took the twins’ words

towards Steve personally, it seems, probably because he handed her sister his scarf

like a gentleman without ulterior motives.

“Alright,” I holler towards everyone. “Let’s get moving.”

Henry joins his brother at the car, waiting for us to approach. Marcel hands us all a

chocolate bar, ignoring our jokes about how it really feels like a school trip suddenly.
The atmosphere gets lighter thanks to him though. While Marcel chats a bit with the

girls, I notice how Henry goes through the tools Anthony and Elise just used, cleans

them and puts them into the box again, then scratches his head, and rearranges them

once more.

What’s he doing there? His actions make me blink. He proceeds to take the tools out

again and clean them once more, seemingly getting more frustrated. When he notices

my gaze, he looks momentarily flustered, before his lips press into a thin line. He

closes the box again and puts it aside, his hands clenching into fists though as if he is

holding back to check it again.

What was…that?

I decide not to comment on it. I might want to kick his ass, but I’m taking no pleasure

out of embarrassing him out of malice. I turn my attention to the rest of the group. To

my surprise Anthony asks Steve about his new fancy backpack and where he bought it

from – a very awkward interaction from his side – but at least he tries.

It’s when we are about to get into the car again that a huge… insect of some sort

suddenly flies past us, circles us for a moment and then flies around the car.

“Am I the only one who just saw that?” I want to know.

“No,” Marcel states dumbfounded.

The insect is back, circling Steve now. He swats the air slightly. “What the heck is

flying around here? A mosquito?”

“Isn’t it too cold for them?” Elodie muses. “Besides, it looks bigger than them.”

“A dragonfly maybe?” Elise mutters. “Judging by its size…”

“Or a bumblebee?” Marcel asks.

“Again… too cold for a dragonfly or bumblebee-“

“Excuse me!” A chirpy voice can be heard. “Who are you calling a bumblebee,

Mister!? Do I look fat to you?”

The fake dragonfly buzzes in front of us. Now that we are all aware of it being here,

it’s easier to track it with our eyes. Elise is right, it’s the size of a rather big dragonfly.

Anthony’s mouth drops open. “Please tell me I’m not hearing voices.”

“No, I heard it too,” Henry mutters. Both of them are obviously so engrossed in

what’s going on that they forgot to be hostile or sassy towards anyone.

Steve opens the palm of his hand, allowing the fake dragonfly to land there.

“Hello!” The small sparkling being waves at us and flutters around in Steve’s hand

before sitting down there, dangling her feet. Steve lifts his hand upwards a bit, so that

we are all on eye level with the little being. She is tiny, quite literally. She does look a

bit like a dragonfly, just that her body looks like a human’s. “I am Trixie!”

“Trixie…” I stare at her, eyes wide. She looks like a freaking fairy… not that I ever

saw one, but this is how I would have imagined them. Her wings sparkle in the sun,

and she is clad in a tiny blue dress with the tiniest flowers attached to her hair.

“You must be Finn,” she beams. “I was told you look a bit like a rough guy, with your

piercings and so.” She giggles.

“And you are here because?” I ask curiously.

“Oh, I was there all along, sleeping a bit. Just woke up.” She jumps up, walking over

Steve’s palm and towards my direction. “A friend asked me to accompany you guys,

she said you might need my wisdom and guidance.” The little fairy thingy giggles.

“And who’s your friend?” Elodie wants to know, completely dumbfounded.

“Oh, that’s Flora!”

Mom? I groan slightly. Why am I not surprised?

Elodie and Elise exchange a surprised gaze. “Your mother, Luna Flora, has contacts

with the fairy world?”

“Yeah, it seems,” I mutter. Truth to be told none of us really knows what my mother

can communicate with. Dad knows the details, but we others just know some smaller

portion of it. She can see things sometimes, but that’s all I can tell.

“And you are coming along now?” Henry asks in disbelief.

Trixie spreads her little wings again, fluttering upwards towards Henry and stooping

his nose. “Of course, I am!”

“Okay, I know this comes unexpected,” Anthony mutters. “But I don’t know what to

say.”

“Same here,” Elodie points out.

“Yep,” Steve nods. “I’m out of words.”

“I’ll be of great help,” Trixie promises, flying away from Henry again and settling on

Steve’s shoulder. “What are we waiting for. Let’s get going!”

“There is nothing else to add to that,” I point out. I really need to tell my mother that

she shouldn’t surprise me out of the blue like that. Next time she sends a fairy after

my ass, she will hopefully tell me. “Whoever is sent by my mother is here for a

reason,” I say. “Also, now that I think about it Trixie is very small, she can be of

help.”

“Hey,” she pouts. “I’m on the taller side for a fairy.”

“I apologize,” I say dryly. “It’s more in comparison to us that you are… small.”

“Apology accepted,” she giggles.

We all exchange a short gaze, before giving in to this new reality. We have a fairy

accompanying us now. Hopefully, my father doesn’t have a similar great idea and

sends goddess knows what to protect us as well.

“Fantastic,” Marcel grins. “Three single warriors, a pair of crazy twins, a pair of

spoiled twins and a fairy. It sounds like we are a carnival, not a secret mission. What

can possibly go wrong?”

Chapter 8 The goddess’s wicked plan
3172 Words

*FREYA*

FASTER, Sereia barks in my mind, and I take it as the final push I need, running as

fast as I can, up the stairs and outside. It feels like all I’m doing is running recently.

Running and searching for my friends. During the last few days, we managed to keep

Amaryllis away from everyone, officially being Arman’s exclusive definitely held

some value. I don’t like his name to be tarnished, but honestly, tough times need

tough measurements, and he did offer himself willingly for this ploy.

Now however I have a new worry child.

Once I step outside, I can hear screams, some people yell and cry. The first one I

stumble over is my friend Gina, she is clinging to one of the warrior’s arms, who

pushes her away with full force. I catch her before she drops down to the ground. “Go

to Ludovica,” I whisper to her.

She blinks up at me. “Freya…”

“Just leave, take everyone else with you.”

The warrior who attacked Gina takes a step towards me now, but I just keep glaring at

him, holding my position. I can see the uncertainty in his eyes. Asshole! He can push

around some helpless slaves, but the moment he faces the tiniest challenge, he runs

with his tail between his legs. Coward.

I want to castrate them, Sereia growls unusually bloodthirsty.

The moment we can shift, I promise. You can do as you please!

There are bottles of beer lying all around. The warriors were on a hunt yesterday

night, and it was a pretty successful one. They called for drinks once they returned to

celebrate, and asked for girls to dance for them. Seems it was worse than usual

though, judging by the several slaves I pass who are sporting bruises and are just

trying to stay out of harm’s way.

The worst thing however is that one of the guards is waving around with the first-aid

kit, the one Arman gave us for Ryllis.

How the fuck did they even find it?

Emmanuel has taken the blow, pretending he was the one responsible for us having it.

Bless his heart, but now they have tied him up, chains cuffed around his wrist and

further attached to a pole to keep him in an upright position. His head has dropped to

the side, eyes half-closed. One of the warriors is wielding a whip, hitting him and

laughing.

Shit, shit, shit!

They are going to kill him.

My heart clenches when I see the whip hitting him over and over again, ripping open

his already bloodied back.

What am I going to do? Sereia, what… I pause. I could… it might be an option,

maybe, or it will make everything worse. Sereia, can you sniff out Arman?

Yes, she says. Turn back, run around the pack house, he is further away on guard.

Goddess, please don’t make this a horrible idea. I don’t know why he helped us the

first time, maybe he was bored, maybe he had his five minutes of humanity, but it’s

worth a try. Emmanuel is going to die if they continue like that.

The whip cuts through the air and hits him again, making him scream in pain.
I turn around and run as fast as I can, the snow piercing my feet, but I couldn’t care

less. Once I approach one of the observation towers, I can instantly notice Arman’s

regal posture. He is like an Egyptian god, standing there and watching the forest in

front of us. There is another person next to him, one of ethereal beauty… I didn’t

expect her to be here, and I am worried that this might be a bad sign, that she will

jeopardize my plan to ask him for help.

Arman turns to me before I have even reached him. Unlike me his wolf senses work

perfectly. “You…” he says, frowning his brows.

He looks stern, but he always does. I take a deep breath. “I’m sorry, Lord Arman,” I

blurt out. “I… there is…” I point towards the direction of the pack house.

The person next to him stirs a bit, eyeing me in surprise before her gaze shifts to my

feet. “Darling, where are your shoes?” she asks. “You are going to get sick that way.”

“I,” I blush a bit. “I don’t have any shoes, Lady Leila.”

Arman’s frown grows. “What’s going on?”

“They had a party yesterday, Alpha Dick-… Alpha Benjamin, it was his birthday, and

they went to hunt,” I blurt out, grasping my sides a bit. I have run so fast that my

heartbeat doesn’t seem to calm down. “And then they partied, and they found the first-

aid kit. And now they are about to kill one of us, and-“

“What?” Leila looks equally confused and worried. She exchanges a gaze with

Arman, her eyes glossing over and she is linking him obviously.

He nods. “Stay here,” he commands her. “You…” he looks at me, pausing. “What’s

your name, girl?”

“Freya,” I stutter.

“Freya, go back to the pack house. I don’t want to see you outside. I’ll handle it.”
“But-“

“No, get out of their sight! The less there are around, the better,” he furrows his

brows. “That’s an order. Follow it. I’ll make sure to get to the group and kick their

butts.”

All my instincts scream against his orders, mainly because I’m not used to trusting

anyone, especially not any of the higher-ranking wolves in this pack. Arman jumps

down from his observation tower and squeezes my shoulder. “It’s going to be more

believable if I’m doing it alone,” he says simply.

I take a deep breath. So, either I’m going to be betrayed like never before or he is

indeed going to help. In a few minutes, I’ll know. “Yes, Lord Arman,” I say before I

turn on my heels and hurry back. Just like I promised him I go right to the packhouse,

noting the relief in Ludovica’s eyes the moment she sees me.

“Where are the others?” I whisper.

“I have someone attending to them,” she mutters, her eyes wide with worry. “What

about Emmanuel?”

Before I can answer her, we can hear a loud voice roaring outside. That’s Arman, I

realize. “What the hell is going on here!?” he yells, and the tone in his voice sends

shivers down my spine. I know he said that he will play his part, but his anger sounds

freaking real. “You are supposed to be on guard and training!”

I carefully scoot closer towards the window, peeking outside.

The warrior who was whipping Emmanuel approaches Arman. “But Lord Arm-“

The guy can’t even finish his sentence before Arman grabs him by his throat. “I have

been on patrol for hours. I had to leave my sister in my spot to come here and see with

my own eyes that you idiots are slacking off.”

“But the first-aid kit, they stole it-“

“That’s my sister’s,” he growls. “It’s gotten too old for her taste, and she gave it to the

Omegas. Or are you implying my sister would be stealing anything!?”

The guys are clearly shocked, Leila is like the pack’s personal sanctum. Even insisting

she would do something shady might mean being killed by Arman or the Alpha on

spot.

Arman rips the whip out of his hands. “I will count until ten. If by then you are not in

your destined positions, I’m going to personally chain you up and whip you myself!”

His threat works miracles. Within seconds the place is deserted, minus Emmanuel and

a few other Omegas and slaves that couldn’t get away in time. Arman looks in my

direction, catching my frame at the window. He nods at me before retreating. I wait

for a few more seconds until I’m sure everyone is gone before I hurry outside once

more. Within seconds I am at Emmanuel’s side, freeing him from his restraints.

Amaryllis joins me and helps.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I whisper.

“I can’t hide forever.” She looks at me through her big eyes, looking sad and tired. “I

want to help.”

For a moment I feel torn, she is like a little sister to me, and I want to protect her as

much as possible, but at the same time, I can understand her desperate need to help.

Besides, it’s better to work fast here and help Emmanuel instead of arguing right here.

“Alright,” I whisper, smiling a bit when her eyes light up.

“Take his arm around your shoulder.” I carefully wrap one of his arms around her

shoulder and one around mine.

“Freya…” Emmanuel mutters, his voice broken and strained.

“Don’t talk,” I whisper. “Keep your strength.”

“Thanks…” his voice trails off, he seems to be losing his consciousness soon, so

Ryllis and I pick up our pace and try to get him inside faster. Once we reach the door

a lot of helpful hands greet us, making sure to help us get him downstairs into the

safety of the basement.

“Fetch the first-aid kit,” Ludovica tells one of the younger guys who instantly hurries

outside to find said item. He is back fast – that’s the thing we all learn here first: The

faster you are the less likely it is that someone sees you or catches you.

During the next couple of minutes, Ludovica orders us around to fetch several things

from the kitchen. Even while worried for Emmanuel she still thinks of us too, making

sure to only send the slaves and Omegas up there on their own, who were not hurt

right now. The fact that we can’t mind link always means we are at a major

disadvantage and need to be extra-cautious.

“Ryllis, go and get some water from the kitchen. Freya… I need some herbs. The

first-aid kit is only getting us that far.”

I nod. “Where to get them?”

“You have to collect them outside,” she explains, giving me a whole list of things to

collect. “If someone asks you, you are collecting them for me for dinner. We expect

guests tomorrow night – they won’t ask too many questions.”

“Guests?” I’m surprised. No one ever visits Blood Snow. It’s hard to reach, and a

shitty pack altogether. No one ever comes here, the only one who has ever had contact

with outsiders is the Alpha and the chosen team he takes with him to summits and

meetings.
“I don’t know much either,” she admits. “A bunch of young warriors, and the sons of

a Gamma and Beta, as far as I’m concerned. But now go.”

Ryllis and I walk down the narrow corridor in silence. Before I can hurry up the

staircase, Ryllis grabs my hand. “Freya,” she looks at me with so much sadness and

pain that my heart clenches. “If you ever… leave, take me with you.”

“Why would you say that?” I mutter.

“Just promise it,” she whispers. “I know you are going to one way or another. Don’t

leave me behind here. I’ll die.”

“You are strong, Ryllis,” I mutter, brushing over her hair softly.

The look in her beautiful big eyes is sad now. “No, I’m broken, I’m so broken… I

don’t think I’ll survive it a second time.”

I know instantly what she is talking about. The last time the warriors got her and had

their fun with her. Bile rises in my mouth at the thought of what she probably

experienced there. She doesn’t talk about it, and I don’t want to push her when she

isn’t ready. That night… something broke in her.

I turn to face her, she needs to hear this to set her mind at peace. “I’d never go

anywhere without you. You are my sister!”

Tears fill her eyes when she hugs me. “Thank you.”

I brush over her hair. “Now let’s go and help Emmanuel,” I say.

Once upstairs, I halt. I take a careful sniff… the air is filled with something. It smells

so… nice. Noticing the questioning glances from Ryllis, I shrug a bit. “Just…

something in the air,” I mutter. “I’ll check this out. You go and look for what

Ludovica needs in the kitchen. My task will take longer anyway.”

Ryllis nods, confused, but does as I tell her to. Meanwhile, I step outside, following

the strong scent. It leads me away from the packhouse and to a little barn. Someone

seems to be chopping wood. When I peek inside, I can notice Dickhead, a grin spreads

over my lips. Oh, seems his daddy found out about the crazy party yesterday, and

wasn’t too happy with his son and warriors. The poor little pup has to work for the

first time in his life. My heart breaks for so much misery… or maybe not.

To my shock though Dickhead notices my presence, spinning around to face me, his

eyes widening. I’m not sure how to act now, it was stupid to come so close to him.

We never cross his path normally… it’s just the scent that brought me here… stupid

me. Something flashes in his eyes, something dark, but it’s not the disdain I normally

see. It’s something hungry, desperate, lustful… but it’s gone fast, and he is back to

looking like the ass he is.

“Mate!” his voice breaths out, he sounds raspy and hoarse. It’s his wolf on the

surface.

Ah right, so that’s it. We are-

Wait, what!?

I can only stand there dumbfounded. I’m Dickhead’s mate? Benjamin, the Alpha’s

shitty heir, who has no talents, a brain the size of a pea and only thinks with his little

dingdong down there. I’ve seen him naked once, and I can vouch that not even his

size is amazing. And going by his huge ego I know he is all talk. No way he knows

how to skilfully float that boat.

He looks me over, disgust clear in his eyes now, his expression one of hatred. I keep

rooted to my place, too shocked to even do or say anything.

No way Jose! I would rather die old and lonely before I mate with him. Even the

thought makes me gag. Where is the monastery to sign me up for? Nun Freya is

coming! Another thing bothers me too though. Sereia, he says I am his mate, why

can’t I feel the bond?

No idea. It’s weird because it’s extremely weak. Sereia says dryly. I don’t know for

you, but I definitely don’t want this idiot. His wolf might not be as awful as he is, but

he has a major superior complex and thinks he is entitled to treat those below him like

dirt. No thank you. We are better than that.

Sereia, I say with all the love and gratitude I feel right now. I love you!

Benjamin recovered from his shock too, it seems because he takes a step towards me,

glaring. “I don’t want to have a pathetic little slave as my mate,” he spats. “An orphan

on top of that. Besides, the Oracle told me loud and clear!”

“What did she tell you?” I dare to ask.

“That I will be fated to someone who I haven’t expected, and that my worth will be

reflected by my following actions!”

Wow, what an idiot, thank goddess he can’t read between the lines, thank goddess he

doesn’t want me.

He looks at me, grinning dirtily. “I, Benjamin Morris, reject you, Freya without a

surname, as my mate and Luna.”

I figure it’s inappropriate to pump my fist into the air now and make a victory dance?

For goddess’ sake, try to look sad, Sereia chimes in.

I pull myself together, looking at the ground sadly as if something just broke in me.

Then I whisper out the words, proud of myself at how real my sadness sounds. “I

Freya, accept your rejection.”

I can feel a little tug inside me as our bond breaks, but I don’t even feel any pain.

Awesome. For once I got lucky!

Pretend, my wolf’s voice orders. I react instantly, clasping my chest and pretending to

be in pain from the rejection while I move away from him. Benjamin himself doesn’t

pay attention anymore, he doubles over in pain, little gasps leaving his mouth.

“Leave,” he yells. “Leave me alone! And don’t dare to tell anyone or you are dead,

bitch!”

Like I wanted to stay here, I think happily. I play my role for a bit longer, making sure

to drag myself out of the barn. Only when I’m out of sight do I run and even hop

shortly. Now that we handled that and I’m thankfully still mateless, it’s time for the

really important things. Gathering the herbs.

Sereia you were awesome!

You too, she says proudly. You didn’t falter once.

Why would I? I don’t want a man like Benjamin. I’d rather end up alone.

You won’t be alone, she promises. I have a good feeling about this, Freya. And I trust

the goddess in her plan. She knew this pathetic excuse of an Alpha’s heir would never

accept us as their mate. Probably just wanted to pay him a lesson, which is why we

didn’t feel the mate bond.

And we are free, I say with a smile. I wish I could see you, Sereia, at least in my mind.

You will, she promises. It’s just that they weakened us so much here that you can’t see

me. But I do exist, and I am a wolf.

Amaryllis’ words start ringing in my ears again, about me leaving. While I start

collecting the herbs Ludovica needs, my thoughts wander further. I’m still strong,

weakened, but my body is strong. I should start to think about how to get away from
here. I can’t stay here much longer or Ryllis will fade away for real. Also, I need to

think of a way to save my fellow slaves and Omegas… they don’t deserve to live in

this misery. By staying here I won’t be able to save them. Maybe when I run, I can get

help?

Chapter 9 The Oracle

*FREYA*

“Here, have some tea.” I help Emmanuel in a sitting position while Ryllis hands him

the tea. His back is still healing, but at least Ludovica was able to make the blood

stop.

“How are you doing?” I mutter.

“Felt better,” he admits, his voice hoarse. “Fuck, I thought they would kill me.”

“You shouldn’t have taken the blame,” Ryllis whispers. “The kit was there because of

me and I-“

“No,” Emmanuel answers sharply. “They would have done even worse things to

you!”
Ryllis pales and tugs at the hem of her shirt.

I exchange a gaze with Emmanuel, shaking my head a bit.

“They just whipped me, Amaryllis,” Emmanuel says, his voice softer now. “I took the

blame because I know I could take it… or let’s say, the chance of me being able to

take it was higher than for the others. Okay?”

“He is right,” I say softly. “We stick together, right?”

She looks at us with tears in her eyes. “Right.”

“Do you want another tea?” I ask Emmanuel, looking at him in what I hope is a

meaningful gaze.

Thankfully he understands and nods. Ryllis scurries to her feet. “I’ll get it.”

Once she is gone, Emmanuel lets out a sigh. “I wonder how long until they lay their

hands on her again,” he mutters. “Fuck, Freya, we have to think of something. Every

time they see her, there is something in their eyes. It’s like she is their prey.”

“She is so pretty and sweet,” I say quietly. “That’s the problem. She is easily the

prettiest here, and she looks young. Feeds their creepy tendencies.”

It’s silent between us. “We need to get her out of here,” he says nervously.

“I know.” I put my finger on my lips. “We can never talk about it.”

He nods. “Our codeword will be to go and collect herbs.”

“Good.” I sigh. “I’m planning to… collect herbs, but I need a bit more time to plan

everything.”

“If anyone can do it, it’s you,” he admits. “Your body is strong, even with your wolf

weakend. You would be the best to collect herbs and get help.”

“Should I tell Ludovica about it?” I ask.

“The less know about it the better,” he whispers. “Ludovica will always be on our

side, but you never know what the Alpha makes her do, if he… you know…”

“You think, they are…”

“It’s just a wild guess,” he shakes his head. “What a monster. Who treats their mate

that way?”

“She remained strong, for us,” I say.

He nods. “We shouldn’t give her more troubles than necessary.”

“Right. Then I won’t tell you anymore either,” I say with conviction. “One day you’ll

wake up and Ryllis and I will be… gon- collecting herbs. And you won’t know

anything.”

“If you need help, tell me,” he says.

“Alright, I will, and now rest.” I look him over for a moment, sad that healing takes so

long for him, but with our wolves so weak, it can’t be helped. “I’ll take over your

kitchen shift,” I tell him with a smile.

He squeezes my hand. “You are the light,” he mutters. “And the hope.”

I don’t know how to comment on his last words. He gives me way more credit than I

deserve. Instead of answering I grab my things and make sure to get to his shift in

time. Ludovica expects me already, showing me a warm and welcoming smile. “There

is a lot to do,” she tells me and the others. “We expect guests tomorrow and there are

a lot of things we need to prepare.”

“And we are short on staff,” I say in a matter-of-fact tone.

She sighs. “That too.”

“Thanks to a certain someone throwing a party…”

“Freya,” she warns me. “Don’t talk about it here.”

I sigh. “Alright, I don’t want you to face any problems.”

“I don’t care for myself,” she mutters. “I don’t want you to face any problems.”

I don’t argue with her further, Ludovica has always been so good to us, and I truly

don’t want her to have to face off against the warriors for any of us again. I decide to

be obedient for once. “What should I do?”

“We are going to prepare the desserts today.”

“Dessert?” I beam. We hardly have anything sweet here, and it means that we can

secretly try a bit of the special stuff we make.

We are in the middle of preparing everything for tomorrow when I can hear noises

coming closer. I halt, frowning. It’s the loud voices of the warriors, accompanied by a

scent I know and fortunately am not in any way affected by. Benjamin isn’t my mate

anymore, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Nick, one of the head warriors, marches into the kitchen and grabs a bowl of fruit

crème we were just preparing. He grins slyly, groping one of the girls who stands

close to him. She squeals in surprise and fear, but it only spurs him on further. “What

is it, kitten?” he sneers. He puts the bowl aside again, grabbing her with both his

hands and pulling her closer to him. Some more warriors are dropping by, watching

him and cheering him on.

Dickhead, aka my former mate, leans against the door and just watches. Goddess, I

hate these guys so much.

“It’ll be easier if you don’t struggle too much,” Nick sneers. “Or do you want to

challenge me?”

The girl stills completely in fear, eyeing us nervously. I exchange a gaze with

Ludovica, both of us trying to come up with something to get rid of the guys, until her
eyes light up a bit in careful hope. “Lord Arman,” she calls out. “How can we help

you?”

My head perks up, only then noticing that indeed Arman has joined the scene too. His

face doesn’t give away anything, he is stoic as usual, but I swear I saw something

flash in his eyes. Something angry.

“Don’t you want to have some fun too?” Benjamin asks him.

“No,” Arman says shortly. “We have guests coming tomorrow, there is no time for

fun.”

“You never have fun,” Nick complains. “Just sometimes with Amaryllis.”

Good, they truly bought our bullshit story.

“That’s because I think of my future mate and how I would disgrace her by not being

able to control myself.”

“Man,” Dickhead laughs nervously and clasps his shoulder. His bravado is just for

show though, he clearly looks uncomfortable with Arman being around. “Loosen up

for once.”

“My sister will drop by soon,” Arman says coolly.

By the mention of Leila, Nick lets go of his prey, and takes a step back. Either he has

the hots for her or he is scared of her… or maybe both. Everyone here is quite

superstitious. And Leila, as the oracle is untouchable. There is a rumour her

premonitions are going to be bad if she is upset.

Arman and Leila are both of Alpha blood, and also tested Alpha. In Blood Snow it is

incredibly rare for a female to test so high, normally women weren’t held in high

regard here. Leila is the major exception due to her rank, and obviously, everyone has
the hots for her. She and Arman normally keep to themselves, they hardly interact

with anyone.

True to Arman’s words we can soon hear Leila’s light footsteps approaching us, her

unique scent accompanying her. Every time I see her, I can only revel in her beauty.

“Arman,” she smiles at her brother, before looking at us. “Ladies.”

She ignores the guys completely, making their discomfort grow. Instead of engaging

with them, she grabs some plates. “Where do you need these, Ludovica?”

Ludovica smiles at her, relief washing over her face. “You don’t need to help.”

“Lady Leila,” the guard with her seems to be close to fainting in shock. “You can’t

possibly sully your hands…”

“Oh, but I have to,” she says, her tone cold as ice. “Because I know for a fact that

there was a birthday party happening last night,” She throws a gaze towards

Benjamin, making him lower his eyes nervously. “And then you, Nick, and your

fellow guards couldn’t keep it to themselves and just had to prove they don’t know

how to treat a woman, which further sent five girls and one boy of the kitchen staff to

the infirmary. So, we are short on staff.”

“But I would never… I would never treat you or one of your friends-“ Nick brabbles.

“A woman is a woman,” Leila states shortly.

We should print that on a t-shirt, Sereia says thoughtfully.

“You know you could take a chosen mate and-“ Benjamin chimes in with what he

probably thinks is a seducing and graceful smile. He looks like an idiot instead.

“Oh Benjamin,” Leila smiles sweetly like she is talking to a toddler. “You know as

the oracle I can only take my fated mate!”

I can swear that for a split second Arman’s lips tug slightly like he is suppressing a

grin.

“There is still hope for you to find your mate,” Nick tries to raise Dickhead’s mood,

much to his anger and to my joy. I pretend not to notice or hear anything, making sure

I keep my eyes to the floor in case Dickhead looks at me.

“He is right,” Arman says seriously. “As the Alpha’s heir, you’ll find your fated mate

for sure.”

Benjamin forces a smile to his lips. “You are right,” he says, trying to look dignified.

“I’m going to be fated to a kickass beautiful female,” He sneers. “At least it’s not one

of these scarecrows here,” he gestures towards us, and his men burst into laughter.

Arman ignores him completely and instead turns around. “I have training to attend

to,” he says shortly.

I bet he is as strong as he is, because he trains all the time so that he doesn’t need to

mingle with these assholes.

“And I’m needed here,” Leila says shortly. “Please leave us alone for now. You know,

I don’t like being surrounded by men."

“Right,” Benjamin nods, looking at her dreamily. “We always forget. See you later,

Leila.”

She smiles gracefully at him, keeping up the pretence until the guys have left, then she

turns around and rolls her eyes. She grabs one of the kitchen knives. “Please tell me

there is something to slice open here.”

“You can have the pineapple,” I offer.

“Fantastic.” She grabs the fruit and slams the knife into it.
We all work in silence, but it’s a peaceful kind of silence. Having Leila here with us

means that no one else dares to approach us. Soon the atmosphere gets more relaxed,

and some of the girls start chatting again. When everyone else is busy, Leila turns to

me. “Freya,” she says quietly. “I wonder if I could talk to you for a moment?”

I’m surprised. She wants to talk to me? Why? There is nothing special about me… I

look around helplessly. Fortunately, Ludovica helps me, something close to hope

flashing in her eyes. “Why… why don’t you take Lady Leila down to the storage

room and show her around a bit,” she offers for everyone to hear.

“Oh, that would be so interesting!” Leila exclaims. “I want to see where you keep the

supplies!”

I take the bait thankfully. “Of course, please follow me, Lady Leila.”

We walk the way from the kitchen and through the corridor in silence. It was a smart

decision from Ludovica to send us to this place – not even the warriors go there as the

Alpha strictly prohibited them from going through the supplies. Everything here is

well calculated as it has to be in such cold weather.

We both keep the pretence up for a while, and I explain to her how everything is

organised, where we get our ingredients from, things none of us are even remotely

interested in right now. When we reach the room furthest away from everything else,

Leila grabs my arm and pulls me into it, closing it.

“No one is around,” she says. “Let’s be fast.”

I nod, confused as to why she even wants to talk to me.

“I had a vision,” she whispers. “Or... no, not a vision. A prophecy, concerning you. I

was looking everywhere for you that day when the warriors beat Emmanuel.”
I'm surprised, both at her knowing Emmanuel's name, which makes my heart swell in

joy, and because I'm part of a prophecy. “But… I’m of no relevance, how come-“

She puts her index finger on my lips. “Let’s not waste any unnecessary time with

questioning the goddess or being unnecessarily humble.”

Sereia stirs in my mind again. I like her. The second t-shirt-worthy thing she said

today.

I take a deep breath, she is right. Of course, we could go back and forth by exchanging

humble polite words of disbelief and reassurances, but who the fuck even cares? We

have no time to waste. “Thank you,” I whisper.

“For what? It’s your prophecy, you have the right to know it.”

I shake my head and smile, thinking about Alpha dumbass Benjamin. “It’s more…

how you talk to me, in comparison to how you tell your premonitions to others.”

Her eyes glint slightly. “Where would the fun be if I told everyone in clear words.”

She looks at me. “Are you ready?”

I nod.

She takes a deep breath, before she starts to recite:

A child born in darkness

A prince as her guidance

On the night of the blue moon

With the light to her left

And the darkness to her right

A decision has to be made.

Chapter 10 Dress-up
3053 Words

*FREYA*

I had to swear to Leila not to tell anyone of the prophecy. In a very few words, she

explained to me that there is a difference between a mere vision and an actual

prophecy. Apparently, a prophecy is like a whisper from the goddess, words Leila

hears, but she can’t tell me what they mean.

Sereia, I couldn’t talk to Lady Leila much more, as we ran out of time, but how

exactly does a prophecy work?

I don’t know for sure, Sereia admits. They are hints. A vision is much clearer, but a

prophecy is just a hint for something big that’s supposed to happen. The oracle told

you the truth for sure, I can feel it.

But what are her words supposed to mean? I want to know. I was not born in

darkness, was I? And who is the prince? Arman?

I don’t think we should take it literally, Sereia muses. A prophecy is often vague,

because it might be dangerous for those involved to know too much about it.
At least the night of the blue moon should be an obvious hint, I frown. It’s in a few

weeks. I pause. Sereia, will we need to decide between a path of light and darkness?

My stomach churns a bit at the thought. It sounds so… foreboding. How will I know

what’s going to be right and wrong?

Let’s not overthink it for now, she soothes me. The night of the blue moon is still

weeks from today. We’ll have more time to think about it. I think we should continue

with your plan. One problem after another.

Do you mean the nonexistent plan to get away from here? I want to know.

We need to get away, she emphasizes. Freya, this place is dangerous for us, we don’t

know how long we can keep the warriors off us, what if they kill us one day? What

about everyone else here? We need to find a way to save them, and we can’t do that

by staying here.

You are right, I say.

I want to say more, but one of the guards approaches me all of a sudden. This is rare

and unusual, and gives me a bad feeling instantly.

Bow your head slightly, Sereia orders. Act meeker.

I’m so glad for her guidance. I get through these situations most of the time because

she is there and helps me play along. If it weren’t for her help, they would already

know that wolfsbane doesn’t affect me as much as the others. I do as she says, looking

down on the ground to show I’m ready to submit. Fortunately, the guard doesn’t seem

to care much for me.

“The Alpha wants to see you in his office,” he says shortly. “You have five minutes!”

The blood freezes in my veins. He is the man I normally make sure never to cross

paths with, it always ends badly otherwise. Just fantastic. But I can’t defy an order
from him. Five minutes is not much to overthink it either, so I just make sure to run to

his office, barely making it in time.

Before I can even knock, he calls me in. “Come in!” he says, his voice rough and void

of any empathy or sympathy for me.

I take a deep breath, willing my fear down and stepping inside. Alphas like

submissive wolves, but they don’t like blatant fear. I can’t appear too weak in front of

him. I bow my head towards him. “Good evening, Alpha.”

“Come closer,” he commands.

Goddess, lend me strength.

I take a tentative step forward, tensing up slightly when he gets up all of a sudden.

Suddenly his broad chest is in front of me, and he grabs my face with one hand,

forcing me to look up at him. His eyes are dark and full of malice. “I have heard you

have been sneaking around my son.”

What!? That’s the last thing I would ever do…

Don’t deny it, don’t agree, Sereia chimes in, her voice tensed.

“It was just a coincidence Alpha,” I say meekly.

“Is that so?” he huffs, his dark eyes glancing over at me. “I know, you are a vile little

witch. My son might have been weak, but I beat the weakness out of him.”

I hate Benjamin with a passion, but a tiny part of my heart clenches with sadness for

him for constantly facing the abuse of his father. He was an innocent child once

before he turned into a monster.

“Say it!” he demands. “That you will never bewitch him and seduce him! I’ll know if

you lie!”
Now that’s a fairly easy promise. I take a deep breath. “I promise, Alpha. I will not in

any way get close to Alpha Benjamin.”

“Good,” his frown grows, and his grip on my face tightens. “We’ll be having guests

tomorrow. Warriors from an important pack, they are here to exchange a few

formalities and learn more about the packs of the north.”

I wonder why he even tells me all that. All I can do is nod.

“Even though you are a little malicious witch, you are pleasant on the eyes,” he

growls. “You will be serving the guests tomorrow. You and that pathetic little slave

my warriors can’t let their fingers off.”

“Yes Alpha,” I stutter.

“If they demand more from you than just food and drinks, you’ll deliver!”

Wait a moment… what? He wants me to prostitute myself to these guys? I feel disgust

filling me. He must have noticed the change in my expression, because his eyes get

darker, flashing in sudden wrath.

“Don’t ever look at me like that again,” he hisses and slaps me so hard it sends me

flying to the ground. I can taste iron on my lips. Damn, that bastard. He grabs me by

my throat and pulls me up again Unfortunately he is the only one here who isn’t

scared of me. His eyes darken. “You will be on your best behaviour in front of our

guests. No troubles as long as they are here!” he commands me. I can feel his aura

washing over me, engulfing me fully, and suppressing my own free will. “And if our

guests want you to spread your legs for them, you’ll do it.”

In my mind, I scream and yell, but all I can do now is nod, not able to break his

command. Sereia whimpers in my mind.

He lets go of me again, and hands me a list. “Take that to Ludovica,” he commands.

“Here is everyone I want to see as servants tomorrow. Only the prettiest of you

pathetic girls,” he spats. “At least you’ll finally be useful for something. Tonight, you

will all get your dresses and makeup. You need to look decent for tomorrow.”

My fingers shake slightly when I take the piece of paper, but I try to suppress my fear

and anger. “Now get out of here,” he growls. “My son is coming.”

I nod, bowing my head again, before stepping back. I can hear the door opening. Well

aware the Alpha is watching me and how I act around his son, I make sure not to look

at Benjamin when I step outside, like I don’t even feel his presence.

When I close the door behind me, I can hear the Alpha roar, my ears picking up how

he slaps his son, followed by the sound of books dropping down. “You won’t look at

that filthy bitch ever again,” he yells in fury.

Benjamin is saying something, but I can’t hear what. The Alpha hits him again, by the

sound of it, it has to be his belt or something alike. Benjamin doesn’t say any more

and I make sure to get out of here. I might dislike him, but I don’t want to stand by as

a witness to how his cruel father further abuses him.

Instead, I make sure to hurry back to Ludovica, my heart hammering against my chest

like madly. What the hell am I going to do now? These men coming tomorrow… they

are warriors and will be eager to get their hands on us. I’m sure Alpha Colton will put

the other omegas and slaves under an Alpha command too. We have no chance, and

it’s too late now to run away.

I’m not prepared for this.

Ludovica is on her own when I find her, she looks up when she sees me, her eyes

widening in worry. “Goodness, Freya, your face!” She grabs a towel and holds it

under some cold water, before pressing it against my cheek.

“Here,” I say and hand her the paper.

She takes a look at it, instantly knowing what it means. “Oh no,” she mutters.

“We can’t protect anyone this time,” I mutter sadly.

“I know.”

I look at her with determination. “I’ll make sure to be as charming as possible

tomorrow, so that they will ask for me and not for Ryllis or one of the others.”

Ludovica looks horrified. “No, that’s not right either, Freya.”

“But I have to,” I say with emphasis. “I can take it, Ludovica. Make sure I look my

best tomorrow.”

Ludovica doesn’t say much, I know this has to be hard for her. She wants to protect us

all, but it’s just not possible. “I wish I could protect you,” she says bitterly. “I’ve

always tried, but I’m running out of strength too…I…”

I look at her thoughtfully, remembering Emmanuel’s and my talk. Despite her age,

Ludovica is a beautiful woman. She has thick white hair, that’s always perfectly

brushed, deep blue eyes and a sophisticated oval face shape. Only a few wrinkles

grace her face. I’m sure she was a stunner as a young woman, because even now she

is still alluring. “Ludovica,” I mutter. “You never tell us your story…”

She looks at me. “Can’t you guess it?” she asks sadly.

I stare at her, something in my chest churning. So Emmanuel’s assumptions are true?

“Alpha Colton, he is your-“

She puts a finger on my lips. “Don’t say it out loud, never say it. It might cost our

lives otherwise.”

“I will take the secret to my grave,” I say seriously. It makes so much sense now. He

probably didn’t want a lowly omega, as he calls them, but the bond prevented him

from killing her, so he kept her as a sidepiece. And she… as the kind and beautiful

soul she is, she pushed her pain and sorrow aside and tried to use her special position

to help us.

“Let’s get you and the others to the fitting as the Alpha ordered,” she says instead of

discussing further. “I’ll gather everyone there.”

I hate this place here with every fibre of my body, so do I hate the fact that the Alpha

wants to sell me to these guests like I’m a disposable object. However, a tiny part of

me can’t help but be excited about the beautiful dresses that are presented to us now.

Ludovica has organized the fitting to the Alpha’s wishes. Not only two hours later and

Ryllis, Gina and I are gathering in a beautiful room, together with some other of our

friends. Some normal she-wolves of the pack are already waiting for us to help us

with our outfits. We don’t have much contact with them usually, actually I hardly ever

see normal pack members around, but to my surprise… they are nice. Some of them

look at us sometimes, a sad expression on their faces, but they don’t comment on it.

Neither do we.

It’s just so exciting for once to feel normal, and soon we all chat and giggle with these

women. One of them, a bubbly young woman with curly brown hair, tends to me in

particular, complimenting me for my hair.

“But it’s nothing special,” I stutter.

“It is,” she beams at me. “The red in it makes it special. Together with your skin tone

you look almost ethereal.”

“My skin tone,” I grin. “You mean close to dying?”

My fellow slaves burst into helpless giggles, while the other she-wolves look a bit

shocked.

“It’s the no fresh air and no sunlight rule,” Gina points out, and we all giggle some

more. It’s our coping mechanism. It’s all we have.

The girl who has complimented me on my hair, looks sad. “You still look beautiful,”

she says warmly. “What’s your name?”

“Freya,” I tell her, returning her smile.

“I’m Frankie,” she says, much to my surprise. I didn’t expect her to have such a cute

and fun name. Taking a closer look at her, I can see her eyes sparkling in mischief.

She seems like a nice and fun person to be around. Pity she is stuck in such a shit

pack.

“How come we never see any of you around?” Gina asks them.

“Oh, most she-wolves aren’t allowed in the packhouse,” Frankie explains. She grins.

“Not that I miss it here. I’m glad that my so-called mate eats lunch and dinner here.”

“Our main task is to pop out a baby,” one of her friends explains.

“Oh, but Odette,” Frankie chimes in with a fake stern voice. “That’s called ensuring

the bloodline!”

“Oh, forgive me,” Odette whines.

They laugh slightly, and I exchange a gaze with Ryllis and Gina. Seems like they have

their very own coping mechanism too.

“None of you is with your fated mate, right?” Gina asks.

Odette sighs. “Fated mates are not a thing here.”

“No kidding,” Frankie rolls her eyes. I’m starting to really dig her sassy attitude. “You

know the weird as fuck ceremony when we shift?”

We all nod. The Alpha gathers the whole pack and has those turning 17 strip bare

before they shift. The pack has to chant a weird song then, definitely nothing that

mentions the moon goddess. Then he instantly decides on their fates… saying it’s the

moon goddess who whispered to him who is worthy of being an actual pack member

and who is not good enough and will be an omega or worse a slave. Frankie is right,

it’s a weird as fuck ceremony, and creepy.

“It doesn’t end there,” Odette explains calmly. “When the rest of us turn 18, he has us

gathered again. They have another weird ceremony, just that we don’t need to strip

naked.”

“Just to our underwear,” Frankie grimaces.

“Then he lights several fires, and chants something, dressed in a weird ceremonial

gown as if he is a priest,” Odette continues.

“And then he decides who the women will belong to,” Frankie ends the story.

Ryllis and I exchange a look of disbelief. What the fuck? Who does Colton think he

is!?

Everything about this pack is so depressing. I’m sure Colton was only able to do as he

pleases, because there are no packs close-by and there are close to no visitors.

We all drop the depressive talk for now though and chat about lighter things.

Frankie makes sure we get food delivered to the room, lots of stuff we normally don’t

eat. The other women clearly want to indulge us. I can only imagine how bad they feel

for us, and how much they pity us. I normally hate it to be pitied, but they seem
genuine. Until now, I thought everyone here in this pack would be awful. It’s nice to

see that there are nice pack members around too.

The next hours we all spend freshening up and taking baths. It’s rare for us to be able

to wash ourselves properly, so we take our time, and the she-wolves who are looking

after us encourage us to enjoy it. Later on, we try on all kinds of dresses. It’s hilarious

because we make sure to start with the worst ones.

When I waltz in front of them with a tacky pink dress, I wiggle my brows. “Do you

think I’ll seduce our guests looking like this?”

Ryllis approaches me with an equal abomination in ochre that washes her out

completely. “Mine is far better, I think.”

Odette just rolls her eyes at our antics but then laughs as well. “This happens when

you let men order something. The Beta and Gamma were tasked with getting the

dresses. Good thing Lord Arman had a last-minute say in what else they chose, or

Alpha Colton would get a heart attack.”

Frankie sighs, her hand on her chest in an overdramatic gesture. “Oh, Arman,” she

grabs a horrible yellow dress and presses it against her body. “Don’t we all wish to

have a piece of him?”

Gina nods dreamily. “He is really hot.”

“What do you think?” Frankie asks me.

“Not bad,” I say. “But I’m saving myself for my mate.”

“Aw,” Odette coos, beaming at me, before she hands me a beautiful dress. It’s dark

blue and out of velvet, a bit old-fashioned, but I immediately take a liking to it.

Fated mates in Blood Snow are rare, it’s all about a strong bloodline here. And slaves

are not allowed to have any mates at all, and after tomorrow I won’t have my virginity
anymore. But a girl can dream. At least for tonight, I want to pretend everything is

normal.

Chapter 11 Mate!
2713 Words

*FINN*

After our little break, we get going again, this time with our additional team member,

Trixie. I really appreciate Mom looking out for me, but I wish she’d have told me in

advance. But well, that’s typical for Mom. Eventually, we reach the end of the road,

where we find a huge free space with a few trucks being parked, I assume it’s the cars

of other pack members. I expected this already, so I make sure to park our car safely,

and make everyone grab their stuff.

“How much can one possibly hate a place?” Anthony asks when he shoulders his bag

and stares into the crappy road in front of us. At least one thing they all listened to:

they just packed the most necessary stuff.

“Yes,” Steve states in a matter-of-fact tone.

Elodie nods. “Yes.”

“Absolutely yes,” Elise agrees and thankfully accepts the hand Steve offers her to pull

her through the snow.

“Major yes,” Henry mutters.

“Okay children,” Marcel says sweetly. “Please don’t forget your backpacks and your

lunch, and don’t get lost on your way.”

“Very funny,” Elodie glares at him while I almost double over laughing.

I use their moment of chatting and complaining to link my wolf. Didn’t fall asleep on

me again, did you, Max?

His head pops up, he looks a bit dishevelled. No, he splutters. Why would you think

that?

Oh, I didn’t, I state, grinning inwardly. I know a strong Alpha like you would always

stick to his promise.

Are you making fun of me? He grumbles.

A bit.

Alright, I think I deserve it, but I’m awake now, and have your back. He paces around

for a moment before lying down, glaring at me before I can tease him. I just want to

do it in a sitting position.

As long as you stay with me, I don’t mind if you sit, stand or lie down, I chuckle while

taking my bag out of the car and locking it. I wisely chose a bag I could also use as a

backpack, definitely comes to my advantage now.

I’m certain there are more paths to Blood Snow, and the pack members probably have

their secret passages that make walking from the pack to town far easier, but we don’t
have that knowledge. The only thing I know is the main road to the pack, and after

last night’s heavy snowfall, it’s covered in thick snow.

“It’s pretty here,” Trixie giggles while fluttering slightly above Steve’s head. She

giggles a bit, takes a dive downwards and grabs some snow with her tiny hands.

“Trixie,” I whisper. “Remember to stay hidden as we approach the pack borders.”

“Right,” she exclaims and flutters back towards Steve. She hides in one of the pockets

of his shirt on his chest. She can poke outside like that and watch what we are doing,

but also retreat fast.

“You are a true womanizer, aren’t you?” Henry points out glumly.

Elise raises her brows. “Well, the competition isn’t particularly tough right now,” she

answers instead of Steve.

“Kids,” Marcel says sweetly again. “Remember, no fighting or there will be no

dessert!”

Once more I can’t help my chuckle at his silly teasing and the glares all five of them

throw at him. Seems like Marcel just found the perfect strategy to handle the group.

We tone the chatting down though the closer we get to the pack borders. I can already

feel it in the air… the presence of several strong warriors, their auras emitting their

strength and power. The first one to come into my view is a man guarding the main

entrance to the pack. I put forward a polite smile and walk toward him.

“We are the group from Emerald Moon,” I say politely, pointing at my group. For

once the two pairs of twins truly shut up and let me handle it. Emerald Moon is Jace’s

pack, the twins’ father, he has never come into contact with Blood Snow yet, which is

why he told us to use his pack as a cover.

“Right,” the guard flashes me a smile, which I instantly notice as fake. His whole aura

is red, radiating around him and underlining his vile thoughts.

It’s my gift to read other people’s intentions and feelings. It can come in handy, but it

can also be a wrong indicator, because sometimes it’s just feelings that get into the

way of a person’s real intention. Someone can be mad and angry, without having a

vile persona. Also, Max and I both have to be wide awake and focus on the other

person to read them. It drains a lot of energy, and since I’m blessed with my couch

potato wolf, he tends to sleep a lot.

Be careful, Max tells me out of the blue. I don’t like this pack.

We haven’t even stepped foot into it yet, I point out.

Still… Max stands up and paces around in my mind. Something here feels off.

He is not wrong. Something indeed feels off, but it was to be expected. After

everything I heard about this pack, I knew it wouldn’t be a welcoming place.

The nameless guard accompanies us towards the pack house. On our way, we bump

into yet another warrior. This one looks stronger, and… weirdly out of place. The few

people in Blood Snow we just walked by are mostly pale and white, due to the climate

and weather, but this guy is not just looking sunkissed, his skin colour itself is darker,

with an olive tone to it. He has black hair, and almost black eyes, and his physical

built seems to differ from the others.

He is of Alpha blood, I link my group.

Are you sure? Marcel asks, clearly uncomfortable.

Absolutely. I can easily tell. I decide to block the others out from the next thing I want

to say, and only tell Marcel for now. He has the best poker face. Don’t tell the others

but he is also a Lycan.

WHAT!? I have to give it to Marcel, he keeps his facial expression in check although

he sounds shocked. What is a Lycan doing here?

I have no idea, I mutter. He is definitely not from this pack originally. Probably why

he looks so different.

Looks alone don’t mean much though, do they? Marcel wants to know.

Blood Snow is very reclusive, I explain. They choose mates due to power, and they

like to keep their blood… clean. I flinch at the last word, barely able to say it even in

my thoughts.

Goddess, Marcel mutters.

The chances of someone living in this pack who looks so different are very low. There

has to be a very specific reason as to why he lives here.

The guard and the Lycan warrior have been talking meanwhile, but now that they shift

their attention back to us, I make sure to stop my mind link too. I don’t want to be

distracted.

“I’m Arman,” the man introduces himself. “Welcome to Blood Snow.”

“Thanks for having us,” I say with a smile, bowing a bit.

Damn it, I link my group. You need to bow too. He is of high rank, and officially, we

are not!

They all follow me and bow towards Arman too.

Arman makes a dismissive gesture with his hand. “Please, cut the formalities,” he

says. “I might be an elite warrior, but I have no special rank.”

I stare at him in surprise. He is a Lycan in a place full of werewolves. He should

naturally inherit a high rank. Gamma, at least!

“The guard called you Lord Arman though,” Marcel asks with a fake shy smile.
Arman sighs. “I’m not royalty, I’m also not of any rank, but my sister has an

important gift, which is why the pack calls us so formally.”

It makes sense. He must be very strong, and if his sister is important too, then I’m sure

their Alpha made sure to groom them accordingly. I don’t say anything though,

keeping my thoughts to myself, but while we walk, I make sure to check his aura.

It’s calm, waves of blue surround him. He seems to be genuine, and I can’t detect

anything vile from him, aside from a wave of underlying anger which doesn’t seem to

be directed at us. I use the time to check our surroundings, to see how the pack

members here live. Most of the people working outside are men, I hardly see any

women. It all looks pretty rough. Life here is probably quite hard.

It’s only when we step into the pack house that the auras of several people hit me. I

wasn’t prepared for it. Normally I don’t have my gift switched on like that for a long

time, but here I did it to know what we get ourselves into. Waves of sorrow and pain

wash over me, desperation, hatred, hopelessness. I clasp my chest slightly.

“Are you alright?” Elodie whispers towards me.

“It’s nothing,” I mutter, not wanting to attract too much attention.

The core of all these feelings seems to come from the basement. Indeed, when we

walk past it, I can see some young scrawny-looking guys and a bunch of very skinny

young women going up and down there. They seem to be… maids here, or… I don’t

know. I just notice the hollow look in their eyes, and how they don’t even dare to look

at us. They look broken.

Some of them show bruises on their arms, and I wonder where they got them from…

and why they aren’t healing. They look at us secretly, like they are scared, and I

wonder what they expect us to do.

Arman’s anger seems to be more adamant now too when we pass them. “The Alpha

expects you,” he says, his voice giving nothing away.

Max both growls and whimpers in my mind.

What’s going on? I want to know.

This is a living hell, he hisses. I can feel their wolves, but they are so weak, like they

are purposefully being suppressed.

Arman leads us upstairs to the Alpha’s office. A young man already awaits us, he

looks pretty strong and is obviously of Alpha blood. This time I’m sure it’s the

Alpha’s heir. Alpha Colton is said to have one son, and it has to be him. “May I

introduce you,” Arman points at said young man. “This is Benjamin, heir of Blood

Snow.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, young Alpha,” I say politely, bowing slightly. This time

the others caught on and follow suit.

“Likewise,” he says shortly. His aura is conflicting, I notice. He seems to elude the

same vile hatred the guard did, but there also is hidden pain and sadness. And while

introducing him, Arman had a hint of pity in his eyes.

Hm. I’m not sure about him. Seems bad, but maybe not as horrendous as the others.

I’m switching it off now, Max says. You are meeting the Alpha. The Alpha of this

shitplace for sure is bad to the core. We don’t need to read his aura.

I agree, besides we need to keep our strength.

Benjamin leads us inside his father’s office. The man waiting for us looks exactly like

I imagined him to, and I’m glad Max decided to retaliate a bit. Nothing about this man

eludes anything warm or welcoming, he just looks cold as the weather outside. I also
can’t help but notice how Benjamin hardly looks at him. His hands are clenched into

fists, trembling slightly.

My own Dad is a very dominant Alpha male too, but I can’t remember one single time

that I was truly scared of him. He always was a loving father to all of us, and he still

is.

I swallow my feelings down. I have a role to play. “Alpha Colton, it’s such a pleasure

to meet you.” I bow in front of him, hoping I’ll come off as submissive as I should be.

I’m probably the biggest danger to our group right now. Anthony and Henry are

younger, they don’t elude that much strength yet because they only turned 18 recently,

but I’m a royal Lycan, and while Mom did give me a potion to hide my powers… it’s

still risky. This here is a powerful Alpha.

“You are Finn, am I right? The heir to the Beta position,” he frowns. “You look strong

for a Beta.”

I pretend to be proud of his words. “In Emerald Moon, we take pride in the Beta

position. My father trained me hard.”

He seems to be content with my explanation, and I hurry to distract him by

introducing the others and their made-up stories. For the first time I’m glad Anthony

and Henry slacked off during the last year, so they don’t appear too strong. Other than

me they are actual heirs to a Lycan Alpha, and once they pick up their training and

will get a few years older, they will be quite the force to reckon with.

“You look strong too,” Alpha Colton comments towards Steve.

Steve smiles proudly, to him this actually is a real compliment. “I’m supposed to

inherit the Gamma position,” he says and straightens his back.

“You are all promising young men,” Alpha Colton comments without sounding the

least bit sincere. He completely ignored Elise and Elodie, as if they weren’t even

present. “We have a dinner prepared for you tonight, come in time for it. On weekend

there will be a banquet to welcome you properly. As for them,” he looks at Elodie and

Elise. “We normally don’t host women in the packhouse, but we’ll make an exception

as you are guests. Arman will show you your rooms.” He pauses and looks at us

insistently. “If you are in need of entertainment for tonight or any other night, some of

our girls will please you in all ways possible.”

I blink. Wait… what?

The scared looks on the faces of the young women pop up in my mind again.

I’m starting to realize that we all didn’t prepare well enough for this. We did put a lot

of effort into training and having potential backup plans in case of failure, but seeing

how shit this place is, I think we should have researched differently, and we should

have worked a lot more as a team from the first moment on.

There is no time for what ifs though… We might not have prepared well enough, but

we are here now and need to make the best out of it.

“Thank you,” I press out. “We truly appreciate your generosity.”

“Benjamin,” Alpha Colton commands. “Tell Ludovica to send some tea to our

guests.” I watch his son scurry away, leaving us alone with this awful Alpha and

Arman. “Arman, show them their rooms.”

Arman nods, bowing slightly and leading us downstairs again. We are all too

spellbound to even link each other, so we walk entirely in silence. It’s when we are

about to reach the second floor, where I assume our rooms will be, that we meet

another group of maids, or whatever the Alpha uses them for. They look thin and pale
too, and the look in their eyes is the same as we saw before… they look haunted.

Compared to the girls we saw downstairs they are dressed better though, and I assume

this is the bunch that’s supposed to entertain us.

What a sick bastard.

It's then that the sweetest scent ever hits me. Max stirs inside of me. It smells like

strawberries, ginger, and a hint of chocolate.

MATE! Max exclaims. MATE!

Hello everyone,

NOTE: You can still read this book for free on Inkitt! (same title there)

I apologize for doing this without any further notice. Unfortunately I had no other

choice but to delete this book, as I need to protect my copyright. There have been a lot
of (!) concerning issues that were brought to my attention yesterday and today, and I

cannot keep this book on this app anymore.

It was always the plan to move this book eventually, although I wanted to do this with

a heads up for my readers and not through such a rash over-night operation. And

please believe me that I absolutely hate that I have to do this so spontaneously now.

This is of utmost importance: If you are ever charged coins to read one of my

books on this app, DON'T PAY THEM! I cannot repeat this often enough! My

books have always been FREE here, if you are f0rced to pay to read them, then

this is a sign that something is wrong! And it's not on me or my decision, it's the

app doing that. I don't see any of that money, and there is no guarantee that you

will be able to keep this book. If that's the case I'd advise you to update your app.

I apologize for the inconvenience, and I'm sorry some of you will be left hanging.

Please understand that this is very upsetting for me too.

It also means I sadly won't be using this app anymore as an author. My current on-

going book will also move to Inkitt. You can follow the story there (the app is entirely

free)

*FREYA*

Despite my previous bravado, I need more than a little moment to gather my courage

before knocking at the door to the guest suites. It’s just… maybe I got carried away.

I’m just a pathetic little slave, I can’t even shift. And like all weak pack members, I

got stripped of all my rights and possessions and was made a slave.

And I’m not a particularly curvy hot woman either – I’m flat as a board, and probably

too tall for a dominant male wolves’ liking. I know that the warriors here prefer small

and tiny girls.

I’m nothing, and I have nothing.

Strong wolves like this beautiful god-like creature I’m calling my mate normally want

strong mates. In Blood Snow all mating alliances are made like that, hardly anyone is
staying with their fated mates. I doubt my mate will want me, and even if… how can

it ever work?

Knock, Sereia encourages me softly. Trust me Freya, like you always did. Our gut

feeling has always been right.

Just that now my gut feeling tells me to run instead of getting hurt. What if he tells

Alpha Colton I’m his mate? My heartbeat speeds up at the thought. If the Alpha knew,

I would either be killed or I’d be in for the whipping of my life. I am lucky he doesn’t

know I was fated to his son first, but even so… One of his guests from a different

pack turns out to be my mate… I can already envision myself being stripped and tied,

before he whips my back bloody.

Take a deep breath, Sereia’s voice reaches me again. I helped you with Benjamin,

didn’t I? Trust me now.

Okay. I nod to myself. I’ll trust my wolf, and either she is right and this will turn out

well, or she is wrong, and we’ll end up dead – and that’s me being optimistic. I grab

the plate in my hands tighter, and carefully knock against the door with my free hand.

I don’t want to spill anything. I’ve learned with experience that warriors don’t take it

lightly if their tea or food gets spilt.

My heart beats so fast I’m scared it’s going to jump out of my chest anytime. I don’t

have to wait for long though, as the door opens soon and I look into the surprised eyes

of one of the men who was with my mate. He seems to be a warrior too, strong and

lean with a few tattoos on his arms, and with ebony skin. He looks a bit intimidating,

but to my surprise he has warm and kind eyes.

“I’m bringing you some afternoon snacks,” I say breathlessly.

“Of course,” the man smiles at me, and lets me enter. When he closes the door behind

him, I flinch slightly. I forgot I’m in a room with… how many of them were there? I

only had eyes for my mate, I didn’t check on the others, but now that I do, I can easily

tell how strong these men are.

There are a pair of twins, sitting on one of the beds, looking at me curiously. They are

both tall and strong, and then the other bulky dude with blonde hair… one slap from

his palm and I might be knocked unconscious.

And then the girls, they seem to-

“Fiiiiiinnnnn,” a chirpy voice calls through the room. The voice seems to come

directly from the bulky blonde guy’s chest.

“Trixie,” the bulky dude whispers. Either he has a weird obsession with his chest and

named it Trixie or he is hiding something in his shirt. I assume it’s the latter.

“Don’t worry Steve,” the voice giggles. “It’s her! Finn, it’s her, I can tell it’s-“

The door to the adjacent room gets ripped open and my mate basically rushes into the

room. His eyes scan the room frantically before they land on me. His scent fills my

nostrils again, intoxicating, it’s like the scent of freedom that’s calling me. Even with

my lowered wolf senses his scent almost takes my breath away.

The man who opened the door, the guy with the ebony skin, nods towards my mate.

“We’ll leave you alone, Finn.”

My mate nods. “Thanks Marcel.”

One by one they all leave to the adjacent room, their eyes lingering on me curiously

though, before this Marcel-dude shoves them forward and closes the door behind

them. Now that we are alone, my heart starts beating frantically again. This is not like

with Benjamin, this time I can feel the mate bond to its fullest.
Finn, his name is Finn. Finn and Freya. We both start with an F.

Isn’t that adorable? It would look so cute on our wedding invitations. I bet Emmanuel

would make fun of it during his speech as one of my best friends… or maybe Ryllis

would do it, but she is shy, and I don’t want to force her to talk in front of a huge

gathering.

Sereia clears her throat. Erm, not that I mind some daydreaming, but don’t you think it

would be better to start with a Hello before planning our wedding?

Right! I mentally facepalm.

It’s so stupid, I sound like a little teen with her first crush, and I’m already mentally

marrying myself to the man I haven’t even talked to yet.

Just that this is indeed my first crush, the first time I feel something so intensely for

another person.

“Hello,” Finn’s earnest face lights up with a smile. He carefully approaches me and

reaches out for the plate. “May I?”

Right, I forgot I’m still carrying his food. Maybe he is just excited to see the

sandwiches, and not me? However, after he put the plate aside, his gaze is back on

me, and he reaches out his hand again. “Is it okay to touch you?” he asks softly. “I

don’t want to do anything you don’t like… I saw some of your friends… And I don’t

want to… sorry, I’m babbling, you’re my mate and I don’t want you to feel

uncomfortable.”

He is so cute! The fact that he asks for my consent because he saw how scared the

other slaves were touches my heart more than anything else he could say or do.

Told you, Sereia sounds smug.

Something in me changes, like a switch that’s turned, and without thinking further I

approach him and wrap my arms around his waist. His arms immediately close around

me, pulling me into a warm and strong embrace. My entire life I’ve been scared of

these strong guys, and now I’m here, embracing one that looks even stronger than

anyone else in the pack.

“You’re not a normal warrior,” I mutter, remembering Sereia’s words from before.

He is quiet for a while. “I am not,” he finally admits, looking down at me warmly.

“Would you tell me your name?”

“Freya.” My heart flutters by the way he smiles at me.

“What a beautiful name,” he says, pulling me closer to his chest. “I’ve searched so

long for you, for my mate, and I had to come to this goddess-forsaken place to find

you.”

“So you…” I pause, noticing how hard it is for me to even ask him. It feels like if he

rejects me, I won’t survive it. “… you want me? Although I’m just a slave?”

“I don’t mind what you are, the goddess gifted me to you, and to me you are perfect.”

“But I have no wolf-“ I mutter.

He grins, and cups my chin to make me raise my head and look at him. “Look, who is

lying so effortlessly. It just so happens that my wolf just told me he already linked

yours.”

My cheeks flush. “I didn’t mean to… it’s just, I have a wolf, yes, but I can’t shift, and

my senses are weakened and-“

“My wolf and I don’t care,” he interrupts me.

“But I’m a slave here, I’m like a prisoner, you can’t just walk me away from here,” I

say sadly. “The Alpha won’t allow it. He’ll rather kill me and-“
He furrows his brows. “No one will touch you,” he huffs. “I’ll take you with me, and

if I have to burn this place down.”

“But-“

“Freya, stop convincing me that I can’t be with you. Because it’s not working. I’ll

literally rip this place apart for you,” he says with so much confidence that I can feel

hope filling me too.

“You are definitely not a normal warrior and not a Beta’s heir either,” I point out once

more. This time I don’t even need Sereia to tell me, I just feel it myself.

He tilts his head. “I don’t want to lie to you, Freya, but please allow me to keep this a

secret for now, as long as our lives are in danger. Once we are away from here, I’ll

answer each of your questions. Everything you want to know.”

So, he indeed came here for a secret mission. Sereia’s first intuition was right. Maybe

someone sent him here to check on our pack. Finally, finally, someone from the

outside is interested in us!

Finn flashes me a grin. “This fiery look in your eyes suits you well. So, just to make

this official, allow me to follow the protocol.” He pauses, looking at me intently.

“What’s your full name?”

“I don’t know my full name. Just Freya.”

“Alright, this will do,” he smiles reassuringly at me. “I, Finn Alcott, accept you,

Freya, as my mate.”

My eyes widen as I feel a sudden wave of warmth come towards me through the

mate-bond.
He just fucking accepted me as his mate! There is no turning back from it once he

does it… he can’t just change his mind. The bond can still be broken, but not as easily

as if we hadn’t accepted each other yet.

Repeat his words, Sereia urges me, her joy so contagious it makes me smile. And

accept him too.

I don’t know one thing about him, we have just shared a few words, nothing of depth,

but I just know I have to jump into it.

“I, Freya, accept you, Finn Alcott, as my mate.”

The warmth I felt from before gets even more intense now, all kinds of feelings

washing over me now that the mate bond engulfs me with its full force. It’s so intense,

it almost takes my breath away. Finn looks happy too, bending down a bit to kiss my

forehead.

I can see his eyes glossing over, just to turn back to normal in an instant. He looks

worried. “I should be able to link you now,” he muses.

“Oh, they are preventing all slaves and Omegas from mind linking,” I explain. “We

are not just receiving wolfsbane, we are also injected with a potion every month.”

“What!?” he almost roars.

It should scare me, but instead, I find it incredibly attractive that he gets so upset for

my sake. He takes a deep breath, willing his anger down. “We’ll make sure you get

back to your usual strength once we are out of here,” he says with conviction.

“Alright, Freya, I am trying to think how to get us all out of here unscathed,” he

mutters. “Tell me what to do to get you out of the limelight during the next couple of

days.”
“Today we are safe, as everyone is busy. Probably the next few days too. From what I

know the Alpha ordered his men to keep it low, but there is always the risk that they

go back to their usual patterns. There will be a banquet for you and your friends in a

few days… you could ask for my services then,” I tell him, for once glad that shithead

Alpha Colton placed this command on me. It won’t raise any suspicions if I officially

come here for supposed sexual services and act like a meek little girl. “The girls you

saw with me, we are all supposed to pleasure you and your guests. It won’t raise any

suspicions if you ask for me.” I pause, eyeing him hopefully. This is the last thing I

need to make sure of before I can allow myself to trust him fully. “And if you could

also ask for my surrogate sister named Amaryllis, I would be eternally thankful. I

know you don’t have you… but she is… she is all I have.”

“Count on me,” he promises. “I’ll ask for both of you. What does your Amaryllis look

like?”

“She is easily the prettiest-“

“You are the prettiest,” he interrupts me.

His words make me smile. He is delusional if he thinks I’m pretty. Delusional, but

cute. “She is the cutest out of us all, you’ll easily tell who she is, as the warriors like

her the most and tend to look at her in ways no girl wants to be looked at. She is going

to wear a rose dress for the banquet.”

“I got it,” Finn nods. He looks a bit upset though. I’m not sure why, but as he keeps

looking at me with his gentle eyes, I doubt it’s something he holds against me. When

his eyes linger on my face, something in his eyes flashes though. They turn almost

black and a growl leaves his lips. He cups my chin again, and bends down to take a

closer look at my face. “Who did that?” he asks sharply while tilting my head slightly
and inspecting the left side of my face. I’ve covered it with makeup, but close up he

can probably see the bruise shimmering through. “There is a bruise. Did someone

strike you?”

He is not going to like the rest of my story, if he already gets upset at that one slap I

received. “It’s nothing,” I say, and in a way, I mean it. It’s really nothing, we are used

to worse things here.

“Was that Alpha Colton?” he demands to know.

I nod, noting how his eyes once more turn black momentarily. He seems to be caught

in an internal debate, before his eyes turn back to their usual colour.

“I really need to get you out of here,” he huffs, wrapping his arms around me

possessively. Goddess, he is so sexy. I swear, even his nose hair is hot! “Trust me, I

won’t allow anyone to lay their hands on you again.”

“Finn,” I look up at him, wondering how in the world I suddenly trust someone so

fast. I don’t know a thing about him, and here I am, putting my faith into his hands. I

just know it, it’s a feeling rooted deep inside me, an instinct. “There are so many

innocent people here, so many…” I pause, I hate the word because it applies to me

too.

“Victims?” Finn helps me, his voice warm and tentative.

I sigh, something inside me clenching painfully. I hate it, I hate the abuse this pack

and their Alpha subjected me to. I hate what they do with the girls and boys here, and

how they treat regular pack members. Until yesterday I thought the whole pack was

trash, but then I met Frankie, Odette and some of the other she-wolves who don’t have

any special rank.

It’s not like they live a great life either.

Though, everything is greater than what Ryllis and I and the other slaves are living

through.

“I can’t endanger them,” I point out.

“I know,” he says earnestly. “And I can’t endanger them either. We’re on the same

page.”

“I trust you,” I say, because I don’t know what else to say. “I trust you.”

He looks at me, his expression serious. “And I won’t disappoint you.”

299 Words

You can follow the story there (the app is entirely

free)
