Nutr ents are substances n food that the body uses:

PROTEIN, CARBOHYDRATE AND FAT
The nutrients that we need to eat in the
largest quantity are protein,
carbohydrate and fat.
PROTEINS
Protein is used for making new cells.
Protein is also used for making many important
chemicals in the body, such as enzymes and
antibodies.
Cells can use protein to supply energy.
CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrate s used to prov de energy.

FATS
Fat also prov des energy.
Fat can be stored n the body.

Fat s needed to make new cell membranes.
VITAMINS AND MINERALS
V tam ns and m nerals are nutr ents that we
need n only very small quant t es.
They do not prov de energy.
Fru ts and vegetables are a good source of
v tam ns and m nerals
FIBRE AND WATER
F bre (roughage) helps to food keep mov ng
eas ly through the d gest ve system.
We get f bre from fresh food and vegetables,
and also from foods made from whole seeds such
as brown r ce or wholemeal bread.

A BALANCED
DIET
Your diet is the food that you eat each day.
Your diet should provide you with enough of
each kind of nutrient. It should also give you
the right amount of energy.
A diet that provides all
the different kinds of
nutrients, and the right
amount of energy is
called a balanced diet.
NUTRITIONAL
DEFICIENCIES
If a person does not eat enough of a particular
nutrient, their body may not be able to work properly.
They may have a nutritional deficiency disease.
VITAMIN C
Good Sources: Citrus fruits
Function in the body: Helps to
make strong skin
Deficiency Disease: Scurvy-the
skin becomes weak, so sores
develop.
VITAMIN D
Good Sources: Dairy products
Function in the body: Needed to
make bones and teeth
Deficiency Disease: Rickets- the
bones are weak, so the legs may
become bent
IRON
Good Sources: Red Meat, dark green
vegetables
Function in the body: Needed to make
haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in
the blood.
Deficiency Disease: Anemia- the blood
cannot carry enough oxygen, and the
person feels tired.
CALCIUM
Good Sources: Dairy products, fish
Function in the body: Needed to make
bones and teeth
Deficiency Disease: The bones and teeth
become weak
