Mathematics 7
Quarter 2 Week 3

Lesson/Topic: Algebra: An introduction

Competency: The learner simplifies algebraic expressions and translate word phrases to mathematical
phrases and vice versa.
Lesson Objective/s:
(1) define algebraic expression
(2) solve the given problems using algebraic expression
(3) apply in real life situation

Key Concept

In algebra, you use letters or symbols, but we will limit our discussion to representing certain unknown
number using letters. These letters are called variables. The value of a variable may vary depending on
what value it may represent. On the other hand, real numbers or known quantities are called constant –
numbers that are exact; their values do not vary. When variables and constants are combined using the
fundamental operation, an algebraic expression is formed.
Observed that the algebraic expressions 3x + 2abc and y2 – 2y + 1 have smaller expressions that are
separated by the fundamental operations + or -. Each smaller expression is called a term.
The expression y2 – 2y + 1 has three terms
y2 - first term NOTE that if the expression is grouped
2y - second term
then it is considered as one term.
1 - third term
Numerical and Literal coefficients
- each term has a coefficient that can either be numerical or literal. The numerical coefficient is the
numerical factor of a term. Recall that an expression having one term such as 3x has the factors 3 and x.
In this expression, the factor 3 is the numerical coefficient of 3x. on the other hand, the literal
coefficient is the product of the variable in a term. In the expression 3x, x is the literal coefficient of 3x.
- example: 2abc – 2 is the numerical coefficients of the product 2abc, whereas abc is the literal
coefficient of 2.
Similar and Dissimilar terms
- Similar terms or like terms are those with identical variables and with equal exponents, on the other
hand, dissimilar terms or unlike terms are those with different variables and with unequal exponent. An
exponent is a number or variable written above and to the right (superscript) of another number or
variable to denote how many times the number or variable is multiplied by itself.
- Example: 4a2 – 19ab + 16b2 + 3ab – in this algebraic expression, -19ab and 3ab are similar terms or
like terms, whereas 4a2 and 16b2 are dissimilar or unlike terms.

Simplifying Algebraic Expression

- an algebraic expression is considered simplified when the grouping symbols are removed and all
similar or like terms are combined. Removing the grouping symbols of algebraic expressions follows
the same procedure as that of simplifying numerical expression. Start with the terms in the parentheses,
then the brackets, and then the braces. When the grouping symbols are removed, you have to combine
all the like terms by performing the operations among the term.
These are the following properties of equality must be noted:
1. Commulative Property of Equality
- If a and b are real number, then a + b = b + a
2. Associative Property of Equality
- If a, b, and c are real number, then a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c
3. Distributive Property of Equality
- If a, b, and c are real numbers, then a (b + c) = ab + ac
Translating Word Phrases to Mathematical Phrases and vice versa
- To solve word problems, you must know how to represent the problem symbolically and numerically.

Decreased by, less than, difference of, fewer than,
smaller by, minus, subtracted from, diminished Subtraction
