Tutorial Sheet - 5 - CE 1403 Geotechnical Engineering - 230426 - 092421

This document is a tutorial sheet for a Geotechnical Engineering course providing 8 practice problems related to soil mechanics. The problems cover topics like direct shear testing of sand, Mohr's circle analysis for soil strength, unconfined compression testing of clay, consolidated undrained triaxial testing of clay, and vane shear testing of soft clay. Students are asked to determine soil properties like internal friction angle, cohesion, and sensitivity from the results of different laboratory and field tests. Graphical and analytical solutions are required for some of the problems.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

SPRING SEMESTER 2022-2023
TUTORIAL SHEET-V
Course Code & Title: CE 1403 Geotechnical Engineering – I (3-1-0)
Class: B. Tech., IV Semester
Instructor-in-charge: Prof. Anil Kumar Choudhary, Dr. Dr. J. Jaypal & Dr. Suravi Pal

1. A direct shear test when conducted on remoulded sample of sand gave the following
observations at the time of failure. The normal and shear loads were 288 N and 173 N
respectively. The cross-sectional area of the sample was 36 cm2. Determine the magnitude and
direction of the principal stresses in the zone of failure graphically.
2. A particular soil failed under a major principal stress of 300 kPa and minor principal stress of
100 kPa. If for the same soil, minor principal stress had been 200 kPa, determine what the
major principal stress would have been if a) ϕ = 30º and b) ϕ = 0º. Provide Graphical and
Analytical solutions.
3. A cylindrical soil specimen fails at an axial vertical stress of 160 kPa when it is laterally
unconfined. The failure plane makes an angle of 50º with horizontal. Calculate the value of
cohesion and the angle of internal friction of the soil.
4. In an unconfined compression test, a sample of clay 100 mm long and 50 mm diameter fails
under a load of 150 N at 10% strain. Calculate the shearing resistance taking into account the
effect of change in cross-section of the sample.
5. The following results were obtained from a Consolidated Undrained (CU) test on a normally
consolidated clay. Plot the strength envelope in terms of total and effective stresses and
determine the friction angles.
SL. Cell Pressure (kPa) Deviatoric Stress Pore Water Pressure
No (kPa) (kPa)
1 250 152 120
2 500 300 250
3 750 455 350
6. An embankment is being constructed of soil whose properties are c’=51 kPa and ϕ’ = 21º and
γ of 15.7 kN/m3. The pore pressure parameters determined from triaxial tests are A = 0.50 and
B =0.90, the height of the embankment fill is raised from 3m to 6m. Estimate the shear
strength of the soil at the base of the embankment. Assume that the dissipation of pore
pressure during the raise of the embankment fill is negligible and the lateral pressure generated
was one half of the vertical pressure.
7. If the same sand given in problem 1 is tested using a triaxial shear apparatus with the same
void ratio and with a confining pressure of 60 kN/m2. Determine the magnitude of the
deviatoric stress. Use the same graph sheet used in problem 1 to solve this problem.

-P/2-
8. A vane shear test was carried out in the field to determine the shearing strength of soft clay.
The vane was 11.25 cm high and 7.5 cm across the blades. The torque recorded at failure was
417.5 kg-cm. The vane was rotated very rapidly in order to completely remould the soil. It was
found that the remoulded soil can be sheared by applying a torque of 283.2 kg-cm. Determine
the shear strength of the soil in the undisturbed and remoulded states and its sensitivity.
