What is community?

Community
● Community usually refers to a larger
than a small village that shares common
values.
● The word "community" is derived from
the Old French communité which is
derived from the Latin communitas
(cum, "with/together" +munus, "gift"),
a broad term for fellowship or
organized society.
● Some examples of community service
are to help in church, tutoring, hospitals,
etc.
Community
● “A community is a group of people with similar
interests and goals whether living in the same
geographical locality or not.”
● Community is a group of human beings. It is not
possible to form a community without a group of
men and women.

1. Demographics
• Characteristics of population
• Tells about the movement of population in
the community that you will serve.

• Allows you to identify certain patterns of
change and people’s way of adapting
these changes that can be useful in
plotting your activities.
• Events of the past that contributed to
the development of the community.

3. Understanding the economy, culture and community
structures
• An economy consists of the economic systems of a
country or other area; the labor, capital, and land
resources; and the manufacturing, production, trade,
distribution, and consumption of goods and services of
that area;
• Income level of the people.
• Culture (Latin: cultura, lit. "cultivation") ways of living of
the people.
• Structures physical, political and social structures.
