Lenoux Project in Math

The document contains a mathematics project with multiple parts asking students to factor expressions completely, determine if binomials represent differences of two squares, find the greatest common factor of monomials, and complete a table with factored forms. The student answers questions about the techniques used, items that were difficult, and their plan to address difficulties by learning patterns through practice.

Mathematical Problem

Directions: Read and analyze the problem.

A. Factor each expression completely

1. 25 + 4x can be factored completely as 5(5 + 9x).

2. 4m² + 12 – 15 can be factored completely as (2m + 5) (2m – 3).

3. 24a + 48b can be factored completely as 24(a + 2b)

4. 3a³b4 + 9ab³ + 12ab4 can be factored completely as 3a³b (ab + 4b³) + 12ab4

B. Tell whether or not the given binomial is a difference of two squares.

1. 49f² -2g² - Yes, the binomial 49f² - 2g² is a difference of two squares. It can be written as (7f)² - (√ g ¿ ².

2. r² - 9s4 – Yes, the binomial r² - 9s4 is a difference of two squares. It can be written as (r² - (3s²)²).

3. 25e² - 16 – Yes, the binomial 25e² - 16 is a difference of two squares. It can be written as ((5e)² - (14)²).

4. 2q² - 8 – The binomial 2q² - 8 is not a difference of two squares, as it cannot be expressed in the form

((a² - b) where (a) and (b) are terms.

5. t14 – u12 – The binomial t14 – u12 is not a difference of two squares, as it cannot be expressed in the form
((a² - b²)), where (a) and (b) are terms.

C. Determine the GCF of each set of monomials.

1. 25x², 75x³, 125x4 - GCF = 25x²

2. 12a², 15a³, 18a5 – GCF = 3a2

3. 13a, 26b, 39c – GCF = 13

4. 3d², 27d³ and 51d4 – GCF = 3d²

5. 35, 20m – GCF = 5

D. Complete the table below.

Polynomials GCF Remaining Factor Factored Form

4x – 2 2 2x – 1 2(2x -1)
15x + 5xy 5x 3xy 5x(3 + y)
7x² - 14xy² 7x x – 2y² 7x (x – 2y²)
2x³y – 12x² + 6xy² 2x² xy – 6 + 3y 2x²y(x – 6 + 3y)

QUESTIONS:

1. What mathematical techniques aid did you used in answering the problems?

Answer: The techniques that I used are the Trial and Error, Recognizing Patterns, and Factoring
by grouping techniques. These techniques are essential for simplifying expressions, solving equations, and
manipulating algebraic expressions effectively.

2. Which number/items hard to answer?

Answer: Item B, because if you don’t recognize the difference of squares pattern, it can be
challenging to factor the expression. This is more of an issue for beginners like me in algebra who may not
be familiar with common factorization pattern.

3. What plan do you have to address these difficulties?

Answer: Learn and understand the pattern, practice regularly, practice continuously.
