4. Procedure for the Periodic thorough Inspection of hooks

 Scope
This procedure covers the following
i. Types of hooks
ii. Factors affecting the strength of hooks
iii. Testing and Examination of hooks
 Procedural Steps
Factors affecting the Strength of hooks:
i. The material from which it is made and its heat treatment
ii. The size of the material of the hook
iii. The diameter of the material of the hook eye
iv. The diameter of load bearing pin

 Testing and Examination for General lifting purpose hooks:

Hooks should be inspected every six months period. Hooks should be proof load tested to
2.5 times of WLL. No further set should be allowed either as a result of service or of
subsequent proof load testing. The proof load requirements for US Federal Specifications
may vary from this and caution is particularly required with older designs as these were
based on different loading criteria. The amount of set permitted also varies therefore
follow the manufacturer’s recommendation and abide by them.

The following must be taken into account in the examination:

1. This Part of EN 1677 specifies general requirements for forged steel components of
grade 8 up to 63 t WLL and also grade 4 having latch and eye up to 31,5 t WLL
2. In order to provide the necessary strength and durability of components this Part
of EN 1677 gives requirements for the design, manufacture and testing to ensure
the specified levels of performance are met.
3. The hook surface free from risk of injury due to sharp edges, sharp angles or rough
surfaces
4. The maximum permissible wear is 8% on either the pin or the body
5. There should be no signs of nicks, cracks, corrosion or chemical attack.
6. There should be no distortion. The body should have a good shape and the pin
must show no signs of bending.
7. Each removable load bearing pin of 13 mm diameter and above shall be legibly and
indelibly marked with the relevant grade number and manufacturer’s symbol in a
manner that will not impair the mechanical properties of the pin.

 Testing and Examination for Residential / Restaurant hooks:

1. The Competent person should verify the design of testing hooks.

2. after verification of design documents should be verified the dimensions of hook.
3. There should be no signs of nicks, cracks, corrosion or chemical attack.
There should be no distortion.
4. The body should have a good shape and the hook must show no signs of bending.
5. The hooks proof load testing should be carried out according to manufacturers
instructed load in design diagram.
6. The hooks should inspect visually after done load testing. If any damage occurs in
hooks or hook fixing point, it will be in rejection criteria.

 Marking:
As a minimum, hooks should be marked with
1. grade number
2. code number
3. Traceability code
4. the manufacturer’s name, symbol or mark

 Documents:
6.5.6.1 Manufacturers Certificate
6.5.6.2 Previous Inspection Certificate for visual / proof load test
6.5.6.3 Calibration Certificate of Load Cell to be used

5. Acceptance / Rejection Criteria

 If any of the three samples fails the test for deformation, the component of the size
submitted for type testing shall be deemed not to conform to this part of EN 1677.
 Excess metal from the forging operation shall be removed cleanly leaving the
surface free from sharp edges.
 None of the parts to be welded are load bearing
 The area affected by the weld is not to be subjected to load under normal
operating conditions or under any foreseeable misuse of the component, and the
welding is completed before heat treatment.
 All welds shall be smoothly finished and also need to refer clause 4 for rejection
criteria
