This document provides information for teaching a lesson on keyboards to early years students ages 40-60 months. The lesson involves identifying the parts of a computer including the keyboard and mouse. Students will look closely at a keyboard and discuss what it is used for. Learning Objectives Before the lesson

Have ready
To learn what a keyboard is and how to locate relevant keys  Coloured pencils (per child)
 A computer keyboard
Print
 Activity: Keyboard picture (see Classroom
resources) – one per child

Activity

1. Look at a real computer together and name the different parts:

 Monitor
 Computer tower
 Keyboard
 Mouse
2. Look more closely at the keyboard. Ask the children: what it is used for? Have any of them used one before? Explain
that sometimes keyboards are not separate but shown on a screen instead. Can the children think of where they have seen
this before? (Phone screen or tablet).
3. Hand out a copy of the Activity: Keyboard picture to each child. Look at them together and ask the children to talk about
what they can see.
4. Ask the children to point out any letters or numbers that they recognise. Discuss (if relevant) the fact that the letters are
uppercase.
5. Ask children to look at the numbers. Call out a number and ask the children to find and point to that number. Repeat.
6.Give each child a coloured pencil and ask them to colour in the letters in their first name.

Teacher notes

If you have lowercase keyboards in school, then make sure that the pictures that you print you match the keyboards that
you have.
You could supplement this lesson by working together with the children to create a giant computer keyboard to be
displayed in the classroom.
