Storage Devices Activity 1

This document compares different storage devices and their advantages and disadvantages. Hard disks are reliable for storing large amounts of data locally but are not portable. Magnetic tapes can store large amounts of data cheaply but are slow to access. CDs and DVDs are inexpensive, portable options but have limited storage and cannot be rewritten. Flash memory such as USB drives have fast transfer speeds and durability but higher costs. Network storage provides backup, collaboration and automated backup but is vulnerable to damage. Online cloud storage offers accessibility from anywhere but requires an internet connection and has additional costs.

Storage Devices Task

Storage Device Advantages Disadvantages

Hard Disk  Holds plenty data  Not portable since it is screwed into the
computer chase, but you can buy an external
 Relatively cheap hard disk.

 Faster than external storage devices  Data can be damaged if the read/write head
of it crashes
 Data can be written to it and deleted
from it plenty times

 Very reliable if it is not damaged.

 Doesn’t take up plenty space

Magnetic tape  The cheapest form of storing data on a  Slow to access data as it uses serial access
backup per megabyte basis (starts from the beginning then continues
going through the data stored until it reaches
 Holds plenty data the specific data that is needed)

 Backing up can be set to overnight or  Magnets can corrupt the tape

over the weekend
 Not considered portable as it needs special

 Very reliable if it is not damaged equipment to read the data on it

 Has a limited life span and the quality of it

declines overtime
CD-ROM  Very Cheap  Data cannot be changed

 Faster than CD-RW  If scratched the data may not be readable

 Easy to use  Slower than hard disk

CD-RW  Can be erased and reused  It has a slower burning and reading speed
than CD-ROM
 It is the best CD for transferring data
 It is more expensive than CD-ROM
 Small and Portable
 Many CD players do not read CD-RW
DVD  Very large storage capacity 4.7-9 Gb.  DVDs do not work in CD drives.

 Sound and picture quality is excellent,  There is no single standard of DVD.

making them ideal for storing films with
video and sound.  They can be easily damaged by breaking or
scratching.
 DVDs are now mass produced so they
are relatively cheap.

 DVD drives can read CDs.

Flash Memory  Speed. It possesses high transferring  Cost. It is expensive.

 Form Factor. Flash memories comes in  Capacity. Though it has a variety of

different forms capacities. The ones with more storage costs
more.
 Reliability. It is more reliability because
compared to the hard disk drive which  Editing Works. It rewrites data in block units
has a moving vulnerable part. which is done one by one. That takes a long
amount of time to do so.
 Portability. It is highly portable because
it is small and light weighted.  Physical Damage. It is prone to being easily
smashed or lost.
Network storage  More Storage Space  Human error or natural disasters can affect
your storage as network storage is on site
 Flawless Collaboration storage, which makes it prone to damage
 Many network storage uses the operating
 Private Cloud Storage system Linux, which is not user friendly, as it
requires writing scripts to access certain
