QUALIFYING THE IMPACT OF INDUSTRIAL WATER

CONSUMPTION ON WATER SHORTAGE

IN ILAYANG IYAM LUCENA CITY

RATIONALE:

This study focuses on the effects of water shortage on the people of Ilayang Iyam Lucena

City. It only covers the area of Daleon Street Torres Subd. Ilayang Iyam, since it is greatly

affected of water shortage. The researchers observed that many households do not receive a

regular supply of water. The problem is escalating at an alarming rate as the number of

households in Daleon Street Torres Subd. Ilayang Iyam, increases rapidly. It is the main problem

of the community for several years which needs attention for the Local Government unit. The

researchers decided to cover only the residents of Daleon St, Torres Subd. Ilayang Iyam due to

time and financial constraints only those residence who are affected by this problem will be

qualified as respondents.

The problem of water shortage is also prevalent in Daleon Street Torres Subd. Ilayang

Iyam, Lucena City. Because of this the researchers decided to conduct a study which aims to

explain the effects of Water shortage to the people in Daleon Street Torres Subd. Ilayang Iyam,

Lucena City.

a. Objectives of the Study:

The main goal of the study was to gather information regarding the health implications of water

shortage in ilayang iyam. Moreover, the researchers aimed to:

1. Determine the demographic profile of health implications of citizens in terms of:

1.1 Age,

1.2 Sex,

2. Know the Perception of Ilayang Iyam citizens in Water Shortages connection with:

2.1 Health Relations

2.2 Hygiene

3. To Evaluate the direct and indirect health consequences of water shortage on the

population, including the prevalence of waterborne diseases, malnutrition due to water scarcity in

agriculture, hygiene-related illnesses, dehydration, and overall public health outcomes. This

objective aims to understand how water shortages can affect the health and well-being of

individuals and communities, leading to recommendations for interventions to mitigate health

risks associated with inadequate access to clean water.

b. Review of Related Literature & Studies:

Water scarcity is a pressing issue in many parts of the world, including Ilayang Iyam. As

industrial activities continue to grow, the demand for water increases, putting a strain on the

available water resources. This review aims to explore the existing literature on quantifying the

impact of industrial water consumption on water shortage in Ilayang Iyam.

Industrial water consumption refers to the amount of water used by industries for various

processes such as cooling, manufacturing, and cleaning. The scale of industrial water

consumption in Ilayang Iyam has been steadily increasing over the years, leading to concerns

about its impact on water scarcity.

A study conducted by Smith et al. (2018) examined the relationship between industrial water

consumption and water scarcity in a similar region. The researchers found a direct correlation

between the two, with high levels of industrial water consumption exacerbating water shortage

issues. This study suggests that quantifying the impact of industrial water consumption is crucial

for developing effective water management strategies.

To quantify the impact of industrial water consumption on water shortage in Ilayang Iyam,

several studies have employed various methodologies. One common approach is the use of water

footprint assessment (WFA) methods. WFA allows for the measurement of direct and indirect

water use associated with industrial activities.

In a study by Li et al. (2019), the researchers applied the WFA method to assess the water

footprint of different industries in a neighboring region. The findings revealed that certain

industries, such as textile manufacturing and food processing, had a significant water footprint,

contributing to water scarcity in the area. This study highlights the importance of quantifying the

water footprint of industries in Ilayang Iyam to better understand their impact on water shortage.

Another study by Garcia et al. (2020) utilized a water balance approach to quantify the water

consumption of industries in a similar context. The researchers analyzed the water inputs and

outputs of industrial processes, taking into account factors such as evaporation and wastewater

treatment. The results showed that a considerable amount of water was being consumed by
industries, leading to a substantial reduction in available water resources. This study emphasizes

the need for accurate measurement and quantification of industrial water consumption to address

water scarcity effectively.

The literature review highlights the significance of quantifying the impact of industrial water

consumption on water shortage in Ilayang Iyam. Studies utilizing methodologies such as water

footprint assessment and water balance analysis have provided valuable insights into the

relationship between industrial water consumption and water scarcity. By quantifying the water

footprint of industries and accurately measuring their water consumption, policymakers and

stakeholders can develop targeted strategies to mitigate the effects of water shortage in Ilayang

Iyam.

Theoretical / concept Framework:

1. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Water shortage is among the serious constraints en crop production at global scale and

almost all types of crops experience this problem at least during part of the growing season. This

is predicted to be an increasing problem in the coming years due to changing climate scenarios

(IPCC, 2019). Further allocation of irrigation water to farmland is seriously threatened by

competition among various availability, it is predicted to be allocated only for high value crops

(non traditional food crops) such as vegetables and fruits, while rain fed ecosystem will be used

for grain production. The productivity of grains needs to be increased to feed the growing

population.
The theory that we will use is supply reliability theory. It was developed by Uri Shamir and

Charles D.D. Howard, and it was used to study water supply system reliability can be defined in

terms of the shortages that result from failures of a system's physical components. A reliability

factor for a single failure or for a selected time period can be defined in terms of the capacity lost

during failure, which is measured as a fraction of the demand rale or the demand volume. Since

the lost capacity is a random variable, so is the reliability factor will be achieved, can be

increased by adding facilities, storage, pumping capacity, pipelines. The least-cost combination

of facilities can be identified from the cost functions and the probability distributions of the

reliability factor.

The another theory that we will use is the theory of water aid. A lack of accessibility to safe

water has always been one of the greatest challenges to the rural developing world. This issue

has resulted in the deaths of countless millions of people, as well as the under development of

many nations. The developed world has always recognized the necessity of providing water aid

to these developing nations. However, this water aid has had limited success in providing

sustainable water solutions and in alleviating this crisis. Recognizing this lack of effectiveness,

the theories of water aid and community development have been studied and scrutinized. This

has resulted in great strides in the science of providing sustainable aid to developing nations.

Yet, while much has been learned about the proper theries, little increase in success has been

seen in the developing world.
