Motivation Letter for a PhD Position in Cultural Ecosystem Services– Fishing practices and

fishery management on the Austrian Danube

I hereby present my application for the above-mentioned PhD position at the Boku university institute of Hydrobiology
and Aquatic Ecosystems Management in Cultural Ecosystems services for which suitable candidates are being
sought.
I am a Food Chemist of Ugandan descent. I possess a Master of Science Degree in Food Science and Technology
from Makerere University, Uganda. I also possess a Second-Class Upper Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry
from Kyambogo University, Uganda. I have over 14 years work experience in the Analytical chemistry including water
chemistry and hands-on laboratory testing of contaminants in food and food products including but not limited to
pesticide residues, mycotoxin, heavy metals, and veterinary drugs using LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, HPLC, ICP, and
radioimmunoassay techniques. I am currently employed by Uganda National Bureau (UNBS) as a Senior Laboratory
Analyst, in the Food Safety Laboratories-Chemistry Division.
My aspiration for seeking to undertake this PhD training and research study stems from my desire to contribute
positively through research to sustainable development of Uganda. I strongly believe that cultural ecosystem services
in fisheries management contributes to local economies through enhancement of livelihoods. Fisheries are an
important economic activity providing employment and income to a significant part of the population. The fisheries
sector also contributes to food and nutritional security. The majority of fishing activities are carried out using
traditional methods such as the hand lines, gillnets and traps. These ultimately lead to indiscriminate fishing which in
the long run affects the sustainability of this fisheries resources. The skills acquired during this training will go a long
way in helping solve this challenge through acquisition of better and sustainable fishing practices and fisheries
management. Moreover, aquaculture, being a rapidly growing sector in Uganda has led to an increasing number of
farmers raising fish in ponds and cages. However, most of these cage and pond farmers have limited knowledge on
the best practices in aquaculture management with most farms lacking skills and knowledge on proper effluent
treatment and disposable, feed composition among other aquaculture management practices.
Another aspiration for seeking to undertake this PhD opportunity comes from the need to contribute positively to
policy development in my country. My experience working with a standards body has exposed me to the
development of various policies. The skills acquired in fisheries management will provide skills to develop policies
and regulations that promote sustainable fishing practices and the protection of the aquatic environment. Moreover, I
believe that this PhD training will accord me with the skills in conflict resolution between stakeholders including those
related to fishing rights and access to resources as well as stakeholder engagement. The acquired skills will not only
enrich my skills set, but will also provide an enabling environment for knowledge sharing to various stakeholders,
which will promote public and environmental health, influence community and behavioral changes, as well as ensure
proper fisheries management in the community.
I have participated in researches and co-authored scientific papers which are available at
http://dx.doi.org/10.2174/1874829501205010050 and https://doi.org/10.1016/j.sciaf.2022.e01245. This positions me
as the best candidate for this position because doctoral programs require publications prior to completion.
I hope that my application will receive a positive consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Mary Magdalein Nakibuuka
