One Day
1. Because everything was going wrong that night, and they decided to talk about the
future, but not the inmediate future, the future in 20 years.
2. There were some differences between them and Dexter tried to imitate her soft
accent, which made her feel annoyed.
3. She came from a humble family, she had socialist ideas and didn’t like the posh or the
bourgeois people and she wasn’t sure about what she wanted in her life, whereas
Dexter was the opposite, was bourgeois, he had money, he wanted to be rich an
successful in his life, he wanted to know a lot of women and he wanted to travel
around the world, because he thought that travelling help to broaden the mind. His
body was muscular and the skin of his face was tight, but in her opinion he seemed like
a cat.
CHAPTER 2
After the graduation she had made a series of bad career choices, she had started two books,
but she didn´t finished them, she had play in a terrible band, she had moved back to Yorkshire
to live with her parents which wasn’t good either. Then she worked in a pub, but living with
her parents was killing her mind, so she decided to move to his friend’s spare room and
worked in a theater group, but after three months she was fed up and she didn’t want to make
a difference, she wanted to be with Dexter in Rome, so she invited him to come back to
London, because she missed him.
CHAPTER 3
Emma worked in a Tex-Mex restaurant, and she had to look after a new employee, who asked
her to go on a date with him in the evening , but she refused.
Then Dexter wrote a letter to invite her to go to Bombay where he was staying in.
After that, he went out with his dutch friends and he bumped into a german girl, the girl was
crossed and tired and swore at him, when he lost the letter he was going to send. The german
girl found the letter, but it hadn’t got address and she realized there was nothing she could do.
CHAPTER 4
Scott tells Emma that he will leave Loco Caliente soon, and he offered her the manager’s job,
then Emma starts crying because she thinks that she will never get a better job and will stay in
the same place forever.
Then Dexter visited her with another woman, but she wasn´t able to meet them so she
continued working and Dexter wrote a handwritten note to meet her later.
When she finished working she found Dexter lying in the grass, and asked him what would his
girlfriend think if she knew that he had left a note asking Emma to meet him.
He told her that Naomi wasn’t his girlfriend, and after that he thought that Emma was the best
person he had ever known.
CHAPTER 5
Their lives had changed in different ways, Emma had worked as a manager in Loco Caliente for
a year, and now she was going to start a college course to be a schoolteacher.
Dexter was working for a television company, at first he had small responsibilities, but now he
interviewed pop stars and actors in a programme called “The bigger picture”. He used a
cockney accent to interview them. Emma liked Dexter to know that she wasn’t impressed by
his television career.
They were on a ferry among the greek islands when they lay the rules down:
1. Separate bedrooms
2. No flirting
3. No sleeping together
4. No nudity
5. No board games
When Dexter went to book two rooms, apparently he only found one room with a single bed,
but actually he hadn’t meant to obey the first rule.
Later they walked down to the beach, and Dexter suggested to swim naked, and at the
beginning she wasn’t agree, but after thinking about it a bit more, she decided to take off her
clothes and swim with him.
After that, he saw a boy stealing his expensive clothes, and ran away but he didn’t manage to
catch him so he had to put on a plastic bag.
Finally they thought about the rules they had broken, and the only one which they hadn’t
broken was playing board games.
CHAPTER 6
Dexter had been drinking the night before and this morning he had to be strong, and drive to
his childhood to visit his parents, because his mother was very ill and she hadn’t long to live.
But when he saw her, he begin to drink wine and sleep, and when he woke up, the day had
passed and he had to go back home, but his father wasn’t going to let him to drive drunk, so
he took him in his car, but on the way he scolded (or rebuked) him for his behaviour.
When he came back, he tried to get in touch with Emma, but Emma had a date with Ian
Whitehead, so she didn’t answer because she stayed at Ian´s home until morning.
Ian was nervous during the supper, because he was worried about Emma and Dexter’s
relationship.
CHAPTER 7
The 15th of July was a very important day and Emma was needed in three different places,
Emma was in charge of oliver’s production ( a musical drama ), Dexter was one of the
presenters of a new programme called “Late at night”, and Ian was ill and didn’t want to go
out that night at all.
Dexter had brought vodka to settle his nerves, and Suki confused the bottles and drank his
vodka.
Dexter didn’t do it very well, However Suki was amazing and managed to capture viewers´
attention. Dexter promised to invite her to dinner.
Emma was on the top of the world because Oliver had been a great success, and her
headteacher wanted a relationship with her.
CHAPTER 8
Emma’s relationship with Ian wasn´t going very well, so she decided to meet Dexter in a
restaurant. They argued about the waitress’ clothes, because she thought that the owner of
that business made her wear those clothes.
And then the situation went worse because he had been obnoxious , but he has taken her for
granted all this time, so she decided to go away and to not contact him for three years.
CHAPTER 9
Emma had an intimate relationship with his headteacher, but she didn’t want to keep it
anymore, Phil had helped her to be confident in the bad times, and she said to him that she
didn’t want to be her lover anymore. Now, Emma wanted to call Dexter and to be his friend
again.
CHAPTER 10
Emma didn’t go to a meeting at school because she had to go to a meeting with her publisher,
and his first book was a novel for young readers which had been written very well.
When Phil (her headteacher) phoned her said that she was going to be in trouble for not
attending at the school meeting, and Emma told him shouting that she had resigned from her
job because she wanted to become a writer.
CHAPTER 11
Dexter was in love of Sylvie, for this time, she was the most important thing for him.
Sylvie´s parents didn’t liked Dexter but he didn’t care because the only important thing was
that Sylvie was on his side, and he wanted to tell Emma about this.
CHAPTER 12
All Emma’s friends were getting married, and she thought that it was a sign that made her feel
that she was growing old. She had been taken better care of herself these days and even wore
pretty clothes. Now she was going to Tilly’s marriage, and the best thing of this weddings was
that she had met Dexter at several of them.
Callum had sold his computer business for a huge amount of money and had started a chain of
sandwiches shops, and now he was offering him a job.
Dexter lead her into a maze to tell her all about his happiness with Sylvie.
CHAPTER 13
Dexter had accept the job but he had to start at the bottom and do the menial work.
Tonight he was going to prove to Sylvie that he was a new person, and he was going to look
after Jasmine (his daughter) alone while she went out with her friends.
But the situation got out of control, and the baby didn’t stop screaming and crying so he
started to drink wine.
Then he called Suki but she was at a party with some friends and she wasn’t any friendly after
the way he had treated her.
Sylvie called Dexter before midnight and after a few minutes she began to cry because she
knew that he was going to be drunk.
