Introductory Concept
Learning Skills:
Explain the effects of force when applied to an object (S4FEIIIa-1)
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
determine the changes that happen to objects when force is applied; and
explain the effects of force on the shape, size and movement of an object.
Learning Activities
Pre-Test
Directions: Read each statement. Write True on the spage provided if the
statement is correct and False if it is not.
_______1. Chalk can be crushed when you applied force on it.
_______2. Objects with lesser mass require greater force for it to move.
_______3. The stronger the force exerted, the farther the object travels.
_______4. Objects that are at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by a
force.
_______5. Pulling the rubber band in opposite direction can change the size and
shape of an object.
Analysis
Directions: Use crayon to mark how force can be applied to change the
physical appearance of solid materials. The first one is done for you.

Abstraction
Based on the activity, answer the following questions:
1. What did you apply on the objects in order for them to move and change the
size and shape?
2. What happened to the shape of some objects when force was applied to
them?
3. Is it possible that an object’s shape and size will be affected by the
application of the force at the same time? Cite an example.
4
4. Without force, will the object at rest move?
5. Without force, will the object in motion stop?
6. Without force, will the moving object change in direction?
7. What did you do to make the object move faster? slower?
8. How does force affect the motion of the object?
9. How will you describe the effect of force based on the activity?
Remember
5
Also, it can change how fast or slow the movement of an object is. A ball
travels farther when the force applied is stronger and it travels nearer when
lesser force is applied to it.
Effects of Force on the Movements of an Object
If force is applied on a moving object, the object will probably do one of the
following:
speed up/move faster (accelerate), if the force applied is along the
direction of the object
stop, if the force applied is opposite the direction of the moving object
and is just enough to stop it
change direction, if the force applied is from left or right of the moving
object
return, if the force applied of the opposite direction and is more than
enough to stop it.
Application
A. Directions: Determine whether the following objects will stop,
change direction, move faster or changes its size and shape when force is
applied to it.
B. Directions: Explain the changes that will happen to the size of the given
objects if force will be applied.
1. dropping of glass plate
6
2. cutting a piece of wood
4. squeezing a banana
C.Directions: Apply force to the materials listed in the chart below. You can
step on it, tear it, break it,hammer it, push it, pull it or roll it. Then check the
column of the correct answer.
1. Which among the following object will require a greater force to move?
a. refrigerator c. television
b. study table d. monoblock chair
2. Which among the objects below require lesser force to move?
a. book b. notebook c. pencil d. blackboard eraser
3. Which of the following objects will move easily when a force is applied
to it?
a. plastic dining table c. small refrigerator
b. empty steel cabinet d. small wooden dining table
4. If a boy will have to kick one object, which one from the list below will
move the farthest upon kicking?
a. shut put ball b. soft ball c. golf ball d. tennis ball

5. Which among the objects will move faster upon the application of a
force?
a. marble b. pebble c. beach ball d. ping-pong ball
