1.1 Background of the Study
The foundation of the family, which is the most basic unit of society, is
made up of parents, married people, and offspring. In both mind and body,
everyone desires a place called home and a healthy family. In most people’s
minds, a complete family consists of married parents and children.
Nevertheless, this is not always the case. As a result, broken families are not
uncommon; rather, they are common and may be found all around us (Saikia,
2017). Even if family members are estranged from one another due to factors
such as job loss, unemployment, stress, or financial problems. It is not
enough to be labelled a broken family. Misinterpretation, maltreatment, denial,
and other forms of mistreatment should cause problems, and this is how
broken families form. A child receives his or her first education and
socialization from significant family members, particularly the parents.
However, a home could be intact or broken. A broken home is defined as one
that is not structurally intact because of the separation of parents, the death
of one parent, or illegitimacy (Adu-Okoree et al., 2020; 1998; Omoruyi, 2014). It
is irrelevant that broken homes are unstable, and that this influences a
student's academic achievement. Apparently, there are a lot of studies in the
literature that deal with the effect of broken homes on students' academic
performance (Achilike, 2017; Adu-Okoree et al., 2020; Awoniyi, Awoniyi,2019 ;
Kasoma, 2013; Minolin & Priya, 2018; Ugwuta, 2016; Smardon, 2008).
Students from broken homes who have experienced neglect or a lack of care
are known to be psychologically imbalanced and unable to face the realities of
their lives. It is worth noting that socialization plays a major role in the
cognitive development of a child. These pointed out that single parenting is
one of the factors that can lead to low academic outcomes in adolescents
(Thiesen, 1997). This is supported by Frazer's finding that abnormal
conditions in homes, such as illegitimacy, the label of adopted child, broken
homes, divorce, and parental deprivation, are likely to have a negative effect
on the child's school performance (Frazer, 2001). An argument between the
parents is one of the main causes of broken families, as pointed out.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The primary goal of this study is to assess the effects of broken
families on students. This study specifically seeks to answer the following
questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:
a) Age;
b) Sex;
c) Civil status;
d) Religion;
e) Strand
2. What are the lived experiences of the students who have a broken
family?
3. How does a broken family affect academic performance?

BODY COLLECTION
The following are the specific types of data collection methods that
were used to acquire, store, and process the data.
Questions and surveys
*Observation
*Interviews
*Archival research
OBServation
In general, financial problems follow a broken family. That’s why there are
more tendencies for children to steal and rob. A broken home can make a
child feel insecure because he or she no longer has a complete family to call
his or her own.

Data Collection
Data collection is described as a systematic way of acquiring,
observing, measuring, and analyzing reliable information to support study
undertaken by groups of researchers from any discipline. While the
methodologies and aims of each field may differ, the main data gathering
methods employed in the process are generally the same. In other words,
precise criteria must be properly followed and applied to ensure that data is
collected accurately.
This research is qualitative data

Data Analysis
Data analysis is described as the process of cleansing, transforming,
and modeling data in order to find usable information for business decisions.
The goal of data analysis is to extract usable information from data and make
decisions based on that knowledge (Johnson, 2022).
