Relation and Function

This document defines relations, functions, domain, and range. It provides examples of relations and functions using tables of ordered pairs. The key points are: 1. A relation pairs elements from two sets as ordered pairs, with the set of first elements being the domain and the set of second elements being the range. 2. A function is a relation where each domain element is paired with exactly one range element, so no domain elements are repeated. 3. Exercises are provided to identify the domain and range of relations and determine if they represent functions.

Objectives:

1. state what is a relation, function, domain and range.

2. find the domain and range in a given table.

Relation – is a set of ordered pairs

{(1,1), (2,3), (3,5), (4,7), (5,9)}
The set of all first coordinates is the domain (x), of the relation.
The set of all second coordinates is the range (y) of the relation.

Domain (x): 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Input

Range (y): 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 Output

x y
(1 : 3)
Domain: 1 Range: 3
Exercises:
Give the domain and the range in the following ordered pairs.

1. (3,5) Domain (x): _____ Range (y): _____

2. (1,2) Domain (x): _____ Range (y): _____

3. (1,3) Domain (x): _____ Range (y): _____

4. (2,5) Domain (x): _____ Range (y): _____

5. (4,9) Domain (x): _____ Range (y): _____

Function – is a rule that pairs each element in one set, called the domain,
with exactly one element from as second set, called the range.

For every domain there is exactly one element.

{(1,1), (2,3), (3,5), (4,7), (5,9)}
Domain Range
(x) (y)
1 1
2 3
3 5
4 7
5 9
Note: Examine the domain and if it has exactly one element or the element
is not repeated then it is a function.

This is a function.
{(1,6), (3,8), (5,10), (7,12), (9,14)}

Domain Range
(x) (y)
1 6
3 8
5 10
7 12
9 14

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is NOT a function.

Domain Range
(x) (y)
1 3
2 4
3 7
2 8
5 10

Since, in the domain the 2 is repeated, then this is NOT a function.

Let’s Practice

Example 1:

Dengue fever, also known as breakbone fever, is a mosquito borne

infection that causes severe flu like illness. The virus is transmitted from an
infected mosquito to human. The table below shows the number of
reported cases by year.

2002 13 187
