Seminor Mohan

The document summarizes a seminar presentation on pumped storage power plants. It describes how pumped storage plants work by pumping water back up to an upper reservoir during low demand periods to generate hydropower when demand is high. A case study of a proposed 3,960 MW pumped storage project in Telangana, India is provided that would utilize two reservoirs and 12 turbines to generate and pump water as needed.

INTRODUCTION
• HYDRO POWER PLANT :The Hydro power plant is defined as the place
where power is generated from a given source, so here the source is hydro
that's why we called it hydra power plant.
• In hydro power plant we use gravitational force of fluid water to run the
turbine which is coupled with electric generator to produce electricity.
• The big advantage of hydro power is the water which the main stuff to
produce electricity in hydro power plant is free, it not contain any type of
pollution and after generated electricity the price of electricity is average
not too much high.
PUMPED STORAGE POWER PLANT
• Pumped Storage Power Plants are a special type of power plants, which work
as conventional hydropower stations for part of the time
• In a hydroelectric power station water is stored behind a dam in a reservoir.
This water has gravitational potential energy.
• The water runs down through pipes to turn the turbine
• The turbine is connected to a generator to produce electricity
• They are mainly used to meet the peak demand
WORKING OF PUMPED STORE PLANT

• The working of the power station can be distinguished as the

• Pumping phase:- when the pump and motors are in operation
• Generating phase:- when the turbines and generators are electrical power
• At pumped storage hydroelectric stations water is pumped back into the
reservoir when there are periods of low power demand. This is often when
there is excess energy being produced by other power stations.
• This stores energy and during higher demand periods the water can be
allowed to low back down to produce electricity just like a normal power
station. Such a system saves energy and also can be turned on quickly at
times of peak demand
IMPORTANT TERMS
• Upper reservoir:- When power from the plant is needed, water stored in an
upper reservoir is releases into an underground tunnel.
• Intake Tunnel:-The water rushes down the intake tunnel.
• Turbines:- The force of the water drives huge turbines, which are
underground at the base of a dam The spinning turbines are connected to
large generator, which produce the electricity.
• Discharge Tunnel:- The water then flows through a discharge tunnel into a
lower reservoir.
• Recharging:- When demand for electricity is low, the turbines spin
backward and pump the water back up into the upper reservoir to make it’s
available to generate electricity when it’s needed.
CASE STUDY OF PUMPED STORAGE
• Telangana will have its first major private sector power project with 3,960 MW
installed capacity in the next three to four years if everything goes according to
plan. It would be a pumped storage hydro-electric power project at Ippagudem
village in Venkatapuram mandal of Mulugu district.

• The off-stream closed loop project seeks to draw 1.65 tmcft of water from nearby
Godavari river, located about 3.5 km away from one (lower) of the two reservoirs
planned to store the water and use it cyclically for generation of power in pumping
mode.

• According to the details submitted to the MoEF panel, the pumped storage
hydroelectric project would have two reservoirs – upper and lower – to be
constructed with rock-fill embankment with central clay core
• The lower reservoir is proposed with a gross storage capacity of 1.65 tmcft and its
rock-fill embankment would run for a length of 2,231 metres with its height up to
38 metres. Evaporation losses, if any would be recouped periodically from the
rivers

• Water conductor system in the project consists of 6 independent pen stocks or

pressure shafts taking off from power block of the upper reservoir and each pen
stock would get bifurcated into two near the power house to feed water into 12
turbines.

• A surface power house would be located on the downstream of the power block
to be equipped with 12 vertical reversible motor pumps with capacity of 330 MW
each.
ADVANTAGES

• No Pollution or waste.
• Its Renewable.
• Can pick up load rapidly in a matter of few minutes.
• It is very reliable because we can release the water to make
energy when we need it.
DISADVANTAGE

• little effect on landscape.

• Once it's used, it can't be used again until the water is pumped back up
• The main disadvantage is special nature of the site required, needing both
geographical height and water availability
• Expensive to built
CONCLUSION

Pump Storage Hydroelectricity improves the efficiency of coal and nuclear

power plants by allowing them to run at maximum efficiency
without wasting energy.
