CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In choosing your own course is a difficult decision to make. Senior High school is given

to the students to have time in choosing a good career. Every student faced with many problems

and hard to decide on their future paths, choosing a course is very important aspect. The

decision whether or not to continue with post-secondary education and the choice of an

institutions to attend are two critical decisions that students make at this time in their lives

(Johnson & Chapman, 1979).

According to Yelena Alvarez (2022) Education is a systematic process through which

a child or an adult acquires knowledge, experience, skill, and a sound attitude. It makes an

individual civilized, refined, cultured, and educated. It ensures the acquisition of knowledge

and skills that enable individuals to increase their productivity and improve their quality of life.

Every nation of the world aspires toward quality of life and social status. Career selection is

one of many important choice’s students will make in determining future plans.

One of the tasks of high school students is to explore and plan for their post-secondary

career options. The decision on good career choice and school sometimes depends on how

students perceive the world and their future. Some of them may not have enough knowledge

and consciousness about how they should process information from personal, social, economic,

political, spiritual, and environmental aspects of putting into context and realization of having

a successful profession. In coming up with the right decision of what profession to take,

students can properly utilize their skills and knowledge to gain proper experience who could

contribute to the development and welfare of the society but, not all students who enter a

university have the intention to obtain the degree (Alvarez,2022).

Choosing a senior high school strand is one of the most challenging decisions that junior

high school students will have to face. It is greatly important because the strand they choose

will serve as their training ground before entering college. This is following their diverse

dreams and interests in life that can still change over time (Deil-Amen, 2011). In relevance,

knowing and exploring one’s field of interest will nurture and help one land on the right career

track since these factors play a crucial role in determining a future career that suits them.

In career selection, students have to undergo an intricate process, where they should

consider factors that would affect their overall decision such as the sociodemographic profile,

socio-economic status, parents, job opportunities, academic performance, personal interest, and

many other aspects to forcefully be open-minded of the things they will encounter in the not-

too-distant future (Moneva & Malbas, 2019; Santric-Milicevic et al., 2014).

Oftentimes, this leads to confusion, doubts, and undecidedness that results in

unemployment and underemployment if, unfortunately, they misfit their pursued career.

Hence, this study prompted to find out the students’ preferred strand, the factors' level of

influence on the senior high school strand preferences, and if there is a significant relationship

between the factors and strands, to help the students decide on their future senior high strand

in accordance to the path that suits them most.

Statement of the problem

Nowadays, there are several factors that affect the choice of Grade 10 students in

choosing the strand that they are going to take in their senior high school. These factors are

their future opportunities/ideal job, personality, family and comrades/classmates. So, the

researchers decided to conduct this research for they will gain more knowledge about the

factors affecting Grade I0 students in choosing their track or strand. This study aims to
determine strand preference of grade 10 student of immaculate Conception Academy.

Specially, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the preferred strand of the grade 10 students of Immaculate Conception

Academy in connection to their choices of profession?

2. What are the factors that affects the choices of strand among the Grade 10 students?

3. How do these factors affect students’ decision in terms of their future occupation or

profession they would take?

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this research is to have data that will be used as a guide in the

assistance of choosing a senior high school strand, which will act as a foundation on the path

in a career that serves as a training ground before entering college. Choosing a senior high

school strand is one of the most challenging decisions of grade 10 junior high school students

as it significantly impacts their future career opportunities and academic pursuits.

This research tends to use the data being gathered in terms of assisting;

- school administration develops reinforced and effective guidance systems that assist

students in their decision towards making the best possible career decisions

- Students in their decision of course of tract

- and lastly parents in their child's concerns in the strand in connection to their child's

path career.

Factors Affecting the Strand Choice Decisions

Choosing a senior high school strand is one of the hardest challenging decisions that

junior high school students will face. Assessing yourself what strand you should take and

what’s the strand aligned in your desired profession. It will prepare for college through

choosing in the strand of they’ve chosen. But there are a lot of factors that influence of choosing

Senior High School strands.

In relevance knowing and researching one’s area of interest will support and guide one

towards the ideal career. Since these aspects are crucial in determining a future career or the

choosing of strands that is suitable for them. Students must go through a difficult process to

choose a strand, where they should take into various factors that could influence their final

choice, such as the sociodemographic profile. Socioeconomic standing, parents, employment

prospects, academic standing, and personal interests and many other areas to force themselves

to be receptive to what they will encounter in the future (Moneva & Malbas, 2019; Santric-

Milicevic et al., 2014)

According to Karen-Lyn Saysay (2011), for instance, parents frequently encourage

their kids to look for low-paying jobs in the Philippines because they offer a reliable source of

income. Filipino households place a lot of value on nursing, accounting, and engineering. Every

career path that a person wishes to take has a variety of options. Some people might be able to

find better career opportunities as a result of the techniques and precautions they take. The

importance of career planning for students cannot be overstated, so it is definitely worth your

while to take some time out of your daily schedule to look into new career opportunities. The

study examined senior high school students’ course and career interests. Many students believe
that the vocational or track they select in secondary school has no bearing on the career in

which they would later specialize (Cabanias, 2021). The study examined how a student’s career

decisions were influenced by their personality, parents, hobbies, employment opportunities,

and peer pressure.

Preferred strands among grade 10 students to their professions of choice

Senior high school (SHS) is the final two years of a new six-year secondary education

system in the Philippines. Rather than simply preparing students for postsecondary education,

the SHS Curriculum aims to prepare students for either higher education or work (de Jesus, E.,

2019). Academics, Technical Vocational and Livelihood (TVL), Sports, or Arts and Design

are the four specialization options available to SHS students. The Academic Course is divided

into four strands: Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS), Accounting, Business, and

Management (ABM), Science, Technology, and Engineering (STEM), and General Academic.

Then there’s the Technical Vocational Course, which encompasses Information and

Communications Technology (ICT), Agriculture and Fisheries Arts, and Industrial Arts. The

adoption of the K-12 program by the Government will assist students in developing their

abilities, increasing their competence, and grasping and Coping with their college journey. The

curriculum has been changed to better meet the needs of students in the area by letting them

choose a specialization that fits their interests.

According to Quinter et. Al (2011), the majority of students’ lives will be impacted by

their career decisions. Students’ Their grades, ages, personal interests, and experiences, among

other things, had an impact on their career choices. And these students’ decision-making about

their goals was influenced by their educational experiences. Additionally, senior high school

students claimed that their choices were decision-making, motivation, peer pressure,
institutional concerns, and future employment are all influenced prospects are one aspect to

consider.

When it comes to treatment and opportunities, students want to be treated like adults.

Choose your career wisely (Gottfredson, L. S., 2005). Economic stability, employment

possibilities, the respondents’ career decisions were influenced by job satisfaction, career

advancement opportunities, and all three (Ko, W. H., 2012). Students who understand their

goals clearly are more motivated and involved. What The kind of fulfilling career that will last

a lifetime is what students need (Lent, R. W., & Brown, S. D., 2013).

Relationship of strand and future profession

In choosing a strand it’s not easy because some students based their decision-making

on their passion or on practicality. The decision about one's career is one of the most significant

ones they will ever make. (Gati, Levin, & Tal. 2019) Choosing a career to pursue is one of the

biggest decision students will make in their academic journey. These choices will greatly affect

their quality of life in the future. Choosing a career in senior high school can be hard when you

have no idea what you want to do or what to choose.

Choosing the appropriate career is one of the most essential decisions a student will

make in their life. Career choices have implications not only for individuals, including personal

identity and purpose, but also for organizations, institutions, and society as a whole. Coleens

and Young (2000) career choices mut be thought through a hundred times before committing;

for this reason, the career guidance program was born. Students in this program will be

introduced to the various tracks and strands that they can pursue during their senior year of

high school.

Factors associated in choosing academic strand

There are several factors that impact the students from high school seniors' decision in

what course they should take. How students perceived themselves in a situation where

personality is a deciding aspect may have an impact on the path chosen. Some courses require

that you have the personality to fit the course. qualities of the occupation. Salespeople, for

example, must be outgoing. Splayer (2000) "Personality" is a crucial factor in selecting the best

course. The personality of a pupil must be self-motivated in order to study course options from

an early age and not the type who procrastinates until they are forced to make a decision.

Students are required to take seriously the influence that grades play in limiting future chances.

"It is," Splayer went on to explain. If you are to make good decisions, you must first understand

yourself and your personality. Future plans that are astute.

Socioeconomic status effects preference, search, and selection. steps of the college

selection process (Cabrera & Nasa, 2000). Submission to the National Centre Descriptive

Summary of 2003-2004 Beginning Postsecondary Students from the National Center for

Education Statistics: Thirty percent of dependent first-year postsecondary students at four-year

institutions were from adults with yearly salaries of $92,000 or more, compared to 17% of

those at two-year foundations, and 4% of those with less than two years of experience. A high

school academic resource is a factor that determines the college selection process's

predisposition and search stages. (Cabrera & Nasa, 2000).

According to various studies, High All pupils' college choices are influenced by

academic factors at school. The largest impact is felt by minority and low-income pupils.

(Rowe, 2002). Parental encouragement and support are a factor that influences propensity,

search, and decision-making. During selection stages of the college selection process,

collegiate parental experiences and the inclination stage is influenced by family college

savings. (Cabrera & Nasa, 2000.). Bers and Galowtch (2002) discovered that data indicates

that parents of four-year college students frequently play significant responsibilities in setting
expectations for their students during the college selection process children and having the

most optimistic attitude to discussing college plans and redeemable for college costs.

There are several factors that may affect the decision of students and parents, where it

can be a good source of insight for private higher education institutions to offer quality services

that will suit to the needs, expectations and demands of the community, with the curricular

offerings of private colleges and universities which are almost identical programs makes

diversification very difficult (Vaz & Mansori, 2013). The decision on good career choice and

school sometimes depends on how the way students perceive the world and their future. Some

of them may not have enough knowledge and consciousness about how they should process

information from personal, social, economic, political, spiritual and environmental aspects of

putting into context and realization of having a successful profession.

The decision of students and parents may be influenced by a number of factors, and it

can be helpful for private higher education institutions to provide quality services that will suit

to the needs, expectations, and demands of the community. However, because private colleges

and universities offer almost identical curricula, diversification is very challenging (Vaz &

Mansori, 2013). The choice of a good career and a good school can sometimes be influenced

by how pupils view the world and their future. Some of them might not be aware of how they

should put information from social, political, economic, spiritual, and environmental issues

into context and realize the importance of having a successful vocation.

• Career Aspirations and Goals: Research by Brown and Brooks (2016) suggests that

students often select an academic strand that aligns with their long-term career aspirations.

They found a strong correlation between career goals and strand choice, with students choosing

strands that they believe will lead to their desired professions.

• Interest-Based Selection: A study conducted by Smith and Johnson (2018) emphasized the

importance of personal interests. They discovered that students who choose strands aligned

with their passions tend to perform better academically and report higher satisfaction with their

choice.

• Academic Performance and Aptitude: Research by Lee et al. (2019) highlighted the role

of academic strengths and aptitude in strand selection. Students often choose strands that match

their academic capabilities, leading to improved academic outcomes.

• Parental Influence: Brown and Martinez (2017) explored the influence of parents on strand

choice. They found that parental guidance and expectations play a significant role in the

decision-making process, with some parents favoring specific strands based on perceived

career prospects.

• Peer and Social Influence: Smith (2020) discussed the impact of peer pressure and social

influence on strand selection. Students may opt for strands that their friends or peers choose,

even if it doesn't align with their own interests or abilities.

• School Resources and Offerings: A study by Jones et al. (2018) highlighted the importance

of school resources and available strands. Schools with a broader range of academic options

tend to attract students who choose based on these offerings.

• Counselor Guidance: Research by Davis and White (2019) emphasized the role of guidance

counselors in the decision-making process. Counselors provide valuable insights and advice to

students, helping them make informed choices.

• Future Prospects: Johnson and Smith (2021) discussed the consideration of future prospects,

including college admissions and job opportunities, as a factor in strand selection. Students

often choose strands they believe will provide a competitive advantage in their future careers.
• Extracurricular Activities: Some studies (Robinson, 2017) highlighted the impact of

extracurricular activities on strand choice. Students may opt for strands that allow them to

continue participating in clubs, sports, or hobbies they are passionate about.

• Personal Values and Beliefs: Brown (2018) explored the influence of personal values and

beliefs on strand selection. Students who are motivated by a sense of purpose and alignment

with their values may choose strands that allow them to pursue their interests in social justice

or community involvement.

Occupational Demands

Fundamental changes occurring in the nature of work have led some authors to contest

that established approaches to delivering career services may no longer be efficacious. This

article challenges such notions and examines the idea of changing occupations and how these

changes may influence the delivery of career services. While important changes have occurred,

occupations remain a viable unit of analysis for the assessment and information resources used

in delivering career services. The article concludes with clinical implications for career

counselors and service providers. (Sampson P., Reardon R., 2011)

Career Planning is no more a one-time occurrence that would end with the decision of

the right university or college. It extends until we get the right job and get a satisfying work

profile. A wrong career choice can also increase the investment cost of a student in his/her

education. Every time when a student’s career vision oscillates it calls for unnecessary

expenditure. Most of the students invest huge amount of money as well as time in getting clarity

over their career choice. They keep changing their subjects, even after having done majors in

a particular subject they end up choosing a totally different profession. (Manav Rancha,

The relationship of the factors affecting students’ preference of course to their career

preference, Brainard’s Occupational Preference Inventory (BOPI) results, academic

achievement and their elective grades were considered. Frequency, percentage and chi-square
were used as statistical treatments. The findings revealed that the availability of work after

college is the first consideration of students in choosing a course in college.

Most of the students prefer to take scientific related field courses, or the “popular

courses” for Filipinos. The least preferred course is in the Agricultural field. The BOPI results

showed that most of the student-respondents are suited to take professional courses. Students’

preferred course is related to their BOPI result as well as to their father’s occupation. Other

factors such as mother’s occupation, monthly family income, students’ sibling position and

students’ third year general average grades are not related to the students’ preferred course in

college to their BOPI results. BOPI results are significantly related to the students’ elective

course grades. Students’ career success can be best attained if proper guidance is given in

choosing the right course in college, suited to students’ personality, ability and intellect. (Dr.

Pascual N.,2016)

According to Digido.ph article in in-demand jobs in the Philippines 2023 because of

the Pandemic the shifting in the occupational demand change by time. The most in- demand

jobs in the Philippines 2023 are the ; Customer Service (Call center agent, fast food worker,

banking and insurance agent); Information Technology (Web security expert, internet

infrastructure officer) ;Digital Marketing (Content manager, social media manager,

scriptwriter, copywriter); Data Analysis / Processing (Statistician, data analyst, data scientist);

Healthcare (Nurse, doctor, dentist, emergency response); Education (Teacher, tutor,

masterclass expert) ;Project Management (Web development project, game development

project); Sales (Car sales agent, health and life insurance agent, banking sales agent); Web

Development (Front-end developer, back-end developer, web designer, UX, and UI specialist);

Food and Beverage Service (Barista, fast food worker, waiter) and etc.

Another factor that was found to be influencing students’ career decisions for a career

is the “availability of jobs” (M= 1.98). This implies that some students decide on their career
choices depending on foreseeing available and in-demand jobs, which enable them to feel safe

and secured in the future as Braza and Guillo, Jr. (2015) emphasized that the first thing students

consider in choosing a course 56 JPAIR Institutional Research in college is the job availability

in their locality. The students’ first consideration in choosing a course in college is the

availability of possible work. This could be the common response of students since nowadays

graduates find it difficult to find a job even if they have already finished college. The course

chosen that is not fitted to the students may lead to their inability to qualify for the competencies

needed by companies. This is because their ability is not suited to the course they have taken,

thus not unleashing their maximum potentials (Pascual, 2014).

Theoretical Framework

Many factors affect career choices of high school students. Identifying these factors

would give parents, educators, and industry an idea as to where students place most of their

trust in career selection process (Super, 1990). In which students are left into the selection

between the Academical, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts. Which under

the academic track involves the common selection of STEM, HUMSS, ABM and GAS.

Gottfredson's Career Theory

According to Gottfredson's theory, a person's career goals or are a mirror of their self-

concept. Individuals look for careers that (a) fit with how they see themselves and (b)

demonstrate their understanding of various professions. According to this hypothesis, students

are drawn to particular areas of specialty. This idea suggests that the secret to specialization

selection is self-concept. Students typically select careers based on how well they fit their

personalities.

Holland’s Theory Career Choice of You

Holland (1994), suggest that the closer the match of personality to job, the greater the

satisfaction. Holland’s theory places emphasis on the accuracy of self-knowledge and career

information necessary for career decision making (Zunker, 1994 p. 49) as cited in Abernathy

(2003). In addition to holland’s theory of 2000 which also states that specialization choice is

an expression or an extension of personality into the world of work followed by subsequent

identification with specific occupational stereotype. This approach can also have in explaining

why certain students choose their strand as their specialization.

Max Weber Three Components Theory of Satisfaction

According to Max Weber theory which emphasizes that social class emerges from

impersonal rational relations emerging from interests found in the labor, commodity and capital

markets of the Gesellschaft. Weber himself provides two particularly provocative illustrations

of how such purely economic class-based interests work. (Weber,2015a/1922: 41, 56). Which

states that socio-economic status greatly affects student’s choices in their form of decision

making in, first money affordability, social status, political status and many more which in

Weber theory indicates the structure of “Economic class-based interest work which means that

a social class is a group of people within a society who possess the same socioeconomic status.

Which strongly signifies a high factor that affects the career selection in connection to the

strand selection path to profession.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
Research Design

Quantitative research was used in this study. Descriptive method was used in the collection of

data, as well as the statistics and interpretation of data. Through the descriptive research design,

the researchers were able to get the data needed to be satisfied in order to discuss the factors

that influence the choices and the selection of senior high school strand among grade 10

students, to their choices of profession. Statistical analysis was employed in determining the

measurable parameters needed.

Research Instrument

According to Shona McComber (2019), Surveys are used as a method of gathering data

in many different fields. They are a good choice when you want to find out about the

characteristics, preferences, opinions, or beliefs of a group of people. The questionnaires will

be focused mainly in the form of close-ended questions.

In this study, the researchers will use a survey as their primary research instrument and

will be based on the statistical data that will be used for the interpretation of this research. This

research will use a list of questions in a close-ended type primarily used in quantitative research

and rating scale which will be computed by the formula of weighted mean. That shows different

questions relevant to the field of choosing Senior High School strands and the question that

will lead us to the problem for this research paper to solve.

Locale of the Study

The picked location of the study is at Immaculate Conception Academy. This place is

selected, since one of the problems in this school is the strand that Grade 10 students will
choose and are susceptible to the decision making of strand to take in connection to the career

decision making in the future. That is why the researcher choose this school for this purpose.

Respondents of the Study

The selected respondents for this research are the upcoming Senior High School

students which are the grade 10 students who will be facing decision-making in their selection

of chosen strand. That has the appropriate situations based on the case of this study in the

development, reinforcement, and effective guidance systems that assist students in their

decision towards making the best possible career decisions.

Population and Sampling

The researchers will conduct a survey among Grade 10 students of Immaculate

Conception Academy, City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. This research uses non-probability sampling

and has the population of all the Grade 10 students. Of 86 respondents in Immaculate

Conception Academy, the students will be able to select the strand that best their needs . The

total of 86 respondents which are students of Immaculate Conception Academy using a simple

random sampling to determine its population which is 86 students from the total of 110

population, the students will be able to select the strand that best their needs. The study will

have the documentation that will be used for evidence but in an anonymity and confidential

manner then will just encrypt the data’s that but will be stated as respondents by numbers to

keep track of our goal needed for this research.

Data Gathering Procedure

Finalization of the questionnaire to be presented to the respondents . Letter of Consent

Proceeding in passing the letter of consent to the principal for the approval in conducting this

research survey and data gathering, letter of consent the school and most special are the

respondents. Proceed in conducting surveys and the collection of data.

The researcher will now calculate the whole statistical population of survey participants and

results. The statistical data then now be used in the interpretation of this research Lastly, is the

Analyzation and interpretation of data gathered in the formation of conclusion.

Statistical Treatment

Probability Sampling is selected in the calculation of statistical treatment. The

researcher used Simple Random Sampling to determine the number of respondents needed.

Every element of the population has the same chance of being selected for inclusion in the

sample.

Slovin’s Formula
Where n = number of samples needed
N = population size
e = margin of error

The researcher wants to survey 86 students to study the factors that influence the

choices and the selection of senior high school strand among grade 10 students of ICA. Then

the 86 respondents will now be divided into strata.

Stratified Sampling then now will be used to divide the population into strata and to

determine its equal allocation in the population of grade 10 students of Ica that are divided into

4 sections. Section Cyprian with 27 students; 27 in section Januarius;

28 in section Matthew and 28 in section Jerome.
