Tutorial 1 - Phy210

This document provides 7 examples of physics problems involving rotational motion. Example 1 calculates angular velocity, tangential velocity, and centripetal acceleration for an object moving in a circle. Example 2 finds angular acceleration and displacement for a bicycle tire accelerating from rest. Example 3 provides values for angular velocity, linear velocity, tangential acceleration, and centripetal acceleration for a person on a merry-go-round. Example 4 calculates moment of inertia and final angular velocity for two disks rotating together. Example 5 finds moment of inertia and rotational kinetic energy for a grinding disk. Example 6 gives the rotational kinetic energy for a pulley. Example 7 determines the speed of a cylinder rolling down an inclined plane.

TUTORIAL CHAPTER 1
1. An object is moving round a circle of radius 0.6 m at the rate of two revolutions per second.
Calculate:
a) angular velocity in rad/s
b) tangential velocity
c) centripetal acceleration
(12.57 rad/s, 7.54 m/s, 94.75 m/s2)

2. The bicycles tire is accelerated equally from rest to a speed of 20.0 rpm in 5.00 min. Find:
a) the angular acceleration (in rad/s2)
b) the angular displacement that the wheel undergoes during that time (in rad).
(6.98x10-3 rad/s2, 314 rad)

3. Marilyn is riding in a merry go round which is initially at rest. The distance between Marilyn to
the center of the merry go round is 3.0 m. At t = 0 s it is given a constant angular acceleration
a = 0.08 rad/s2 for 10.0 s. At t = 10.0 s, Find:
a) The angular velocity of the merry go round.
b) The linear velocity that Marilyn felt.
c) The tangential acceleration of Marilyn.
d) The centripetal acceleration of Marilyn.
(0.8 rad/s, 2.4 m/s, 0.24 m/s2, 1.92 m/s2)

4. A uniform disk (mass of 2.50 kg, radius of 0.50 m) is rotating without friction at an initial angular
velocity of 10.0 rad/s. A second uniform disk (mass of 5 kg, radius of 0.25 m) is initially at rest
and is dropped gently onto the first disk so that they eventually rotate together about the
common axis as in Figure 1. Find:
a) final moments of inertia
1
b) final angular velocity of the combination. Given the I disc = MR 2 .
2

(0.464 kgm2, 6.66 rad/s)

5. A grinding disk of radius 0.6 m and mass 30 kg is rotating 460 revolutions per minute.
a) Calculate the moment of inertia.
b) Determine the rotational kinetic energy.
(10.8 kgm2, 6265 J)

6. A 20 kg cylinder pulley with a radius of 0.2 m rotates at a constant angular speed of 4 rad/s.
What is the rotational kinetic energy of the pulley?
(3.2J)

7. A solid cylinder of radius 0.2 m and mass 2 kg is at rest at a height 1.2 m at the top of an
inclined plane making an angle 60° with the horizontal. Assuming no slipping, what is the speed
of the cylinder at the bottom of the incline?
(3.9 m/s)
