A-3: TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING
f’ck = fck + 1.65 S (Or) f’ck = fck + X
Whichever is higher, Where
f’ck = target average compressive strength at 28 days.
fck = characteristic compressive strength at 28 days
S = standard deviation and
X = factor based on grade of concrete
From Table 2 of IS:10262-2019, standard deviation, S = 5 N/mm²
From Table 1 of IS:10262-2019, Value of X = 6.5
Therefore, target strength using both equations, that is,
a) f’ck = fck + 1.65 S i.e 30 + (1.65 * 5) = 38.25 MPa
b) f’ck = fck + X i.e 30 + 6.5 = 36.5 MPa
The higher value is to be adopted. Therefore, target strength will be 38.25 N/mm²
as 38.25 N/mm² > 36.5 N/mm²
A-4: APPROXIMATE AIR CONTENT
From Table 3 of IS:10262-2019, the approximate amount of entrapped air to be expected in
normal (non-air-entrained) concrete is 1 percent for 20mm nominal maximum size of aggregate.
A-5: SELECTION OF WATER-CEMENT RATIO
From Fig. 1 of IS:10262-2019, the free w/c ratio required for the target strength of 38.25 MPa is: 0.493
for OPC 53 grade curve. (for expected 28 days compressive strength of 53N/mm2 and above)
But as per the experience the water-Cementitious ratio is assumed as 0.38
This is lower than 0.45 priscribed for 'Severe' exposure for plain concrete as per table 5 of IS 456
0.38 < 0.45 Hence, O.K
A-6: SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT
From table 4 of IS 10262-2019, water content = 186 Kg (for 50mm slump) for 20mm aggregate
Estimated water content for the 135mm, (Slump) = 186 + (0.102 X 186) = 205 Litre
(Increase by about 3% of every additional 25mm slump)
As superplasticizer (PCE Based) is used, the water content can be reduced up to 30 percent
Based on trials with superplasticizer for desired retention, water content reduction of 24% has been achieved.
Hence, the arrived water content = 205 X 0.76 = 155.8 Litre
A-7: CALCULATION OF CEMENTITIOUS CONTENT
Water-Cementitious ratio (as arrived above) = 0.38
Cementitious content: 155.8/0.38 = 410 Kg/Cum
Fly Ash taken 24.39 % of total cementitious content = 410 X 24.39 % = 100 Kg
From the table 5 of IS 456, the minimum cement content for ' Severe' exposure condition is 320 Kg/Cum
410 Kg/Cum > 320 Kg/Cum, Hence, O.K
A-8: PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT
From table 5 of IS 10262-2019, volume of coarse aggrege corrosponding to 20mm size aggregate
and fine aggregate (Zone 2) for water cement ratio of 0.5 =0.62
Corrected proportion of volume of coarse aggregate for water-cement ratio of 0.38 = 0.644
(at the rate of -/+ 0.01 for every +/- 0.05 change in water cement ratio)
For Pumpable/Cohesieve concrete, these values can modified. Hence, 8% reduction is considered
Therefore, corrected volume of coarse aggregate =0.644 X 0.92 = 0.592
Volume of fine aggregate content = 1 - 0.592 = 0.408
A-9: MIX CALCULATION
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows:
