Tutorial Lab1 (Copy)

This document provides instructions for installing and getting started with the open source GIS software QGIS. It explains that QGIS can be used for mapping and GIS needs free of charge. It outlines tasks for learners to install QGIS, familiarize themselves with the interface, and prepare Nepal boundary data for mapping. Learners are instructed to watch tutorial videos, then prepare a report covering GIS tools, installing and using QGIS, available Nepal data sources and formats, and how to work with vector data in QGIS. The report is to be submitted in PDF format with screenshots by the given deadline.

Tutorial/Lab 1

1. What is QGIS and where do I get it?

QGIS is an open source GIS (Geographic Information System) software – which means it's
FREE for download and use for all your mapping and GIS needs.

The software is constantly developing and being improved upon. These training materials are
based on the latest stable release that was available at the time. To download the latest version
of QGIS visit the official QGIS website, http://www.qgis.org/

2. Task 1 – Installation and Familiarization with QGIS Tool

 QGIS Work Space
 To install follow the procedure as per the underlying OS:
https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/alldownloads.html
 Open QGIS from the desktop shortcut, i.e. click on the icon that says “QGIS desktop” (DO
NOT CLICK ON the icon that says “QGIS Browser” or any other)
 When opening QGIS for the first time you will see the interface below:
3. Interface
QGIS can be run from a User Interface (GUI) or command line and integrates tools from other
free and open systems like GRASS, GDAL, SAGA and programming languages like Phyton
and R. The GUI is has different components that can be re-arranged and personalized. Basically
the main QGIS GUI types of components are:
1. Menu Bar
2. Toolbars
3. Panels
4. Map View
5. Status Bar

4. Task 2: Prepare the Data

1. To create a map of Nepal, you'll need the shapefile or spatial data of Nepal's boundaries. We
can obtain this data from various sources, such as OpenStreetMap or official government
portals. Make sure the data is in a compatible format (e.g., Shapefile, GeoJSON, etc.) and
stored on your computer.
2. Download the Natural Earth Quickstart Kit. If the download link doesn’t work, get it
directly from Natural Earth Downloads page.
3. For Nepal GIS data - Opendatanepal
4. Lunch QGIS and Add Vector data

The above is fundamental aspects of tools that we are using.

Students are instructed to watch the following videos and prepare a short report.
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLzzgzIQMZg
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34ojTRJKTS8
3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHolzMgaqwE&list=PLLxyyob7YmEHFg5xvwszKIo_sNZbczlNC

Problem statement :
1. Study the open source and commercial tools for GIS analysis (focus on QGIS) and prepare the
detail report covering the following concepts:
I. GIS tools
II. Installation
III. Introduction and its interface (including panels and toolbars)
IV. Data sources and availability in the context of Nepal
V. Vector data and its data files, working with vector data, adding data, adding attribute like
labels to vector data.

Submission:
Learners should submit a report in pdf file formate and report should include all the steps and
screenshot of major procedure as well as learners are encourage to write their report at your own.
Students are advised to use Latex (online overleaf ) to compile their report.

Deadline: 15/12/2080
