Week 5 - Sampling Distribution of Sample Means II

Here are the answers: A. 1. AHA 2. AHA 3. equal 4. small 5. AHA B. The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means is 48.5. The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample means is 6.25/√65 = 0.7734. So the mean is 48.5 and the standard deviation is 0.7734.

A group of students was asked about the number of gadgets they

have. Their responses are 3, 4, 5, and 6. Supposed only 2 of them are
going to be used in the survey. Construct a sampling distribution of

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

✓ find the mean and variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample means;
✓ define the sampling distribution of the sample
mean for normal population when the variance is
known or unknown;
✓ illustrate Central Limit Theorem;
✓ define the sampling distribution of the sample
means using Central Limit Theorem; and

Mean and Variance of the
Sampling Distribution of the
Sample Means

A sampling distribution of the

sample means is described by
computing its mean and
variance.
Properties of Sampling Distribution of Sample Mean
If all possible samples of size 𝑛 are drawn from a population of size 𝑁 with mean
𝜇 and variance 𝜎 2 , then the sampling distribution of the sample means has the
following properties:

I. The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means 𝜇𝑥ҧ is equal to the
population mean 𝜇.
𝝁ഥ𝒙 = 𝝁
II. The variance of the sampling distribution of the sample means is given by:
𝝈𝟐 𝑵−𝒏
𝝈𝟐 ഥ𝒙 = 𝒏 𝑵−𝟏
→for finite population
𝝈𝟐
𝝈𝟐 ഥ𝒙 = →for infinite population
𝒏
III. The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample means is the
square root of the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample means.
𝝈= 𝝈𝟐 ഥ𝒙
The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample
means is also known as the standard error of the mean. It measures the
degree of accuracy of the sample mean 𝜇ҧ as an estimate of the
population mean 𝜇.

A good estimate of the mean is obtained if the standard error 𝜎𝑥ഥ of the
mean is small or close to zero, while a poor estimate is obtained if the
standard error 𝜎𝑥ഥ ̅ of the mean is large. As the sample size 𝑛 increases,
the standard error 𝜎𝑥ഥ ̅ of the mean decreases. Therefore, make the
sample size sufficiently large to get a good estimate.
The Central Limit Theorem
If random samples of size 𝒏 are drawn from
a population, then as 𝒏 becomes larger, the
sampling distribution of the mean
approaches the normal distribution,
regardless of the shape of the population
distribution.
Describing the Sampling Distribution of the Sample Means

1. A population has a mean of 60 and a standard deviation of 5. A random sample of

16 measurements is drawn from this population. Describe the sampling
distribution of the sample means.
Step 1: 𝑢 = 60 𝜎 = 5 𝑛 = 16
Step 2: 𝜇𝑥ҧ = 𝜇
𝜇𝑥ҧ = 60
2 2
𝜎 5
Step 3: 𝜎 2 𝑥ҧ = = = 1.56
𝑛 16
Step 4: 𝜎 = 𝜎 2 ҧ = 1.56 = 1.25
𝑥

Step 5: The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means is 60 and
the standard error is 1.25. It is a poor estimate.
Describing the Sampling Distribution of the Sample Means

2. The heights of 2,000 male college students are normally distributed with mean of
68 inches and standard deviation of 3 inches. If samples of 25 are drawn from the
population, what would be the expected mean and standard error of the resulting
sampling distribution of the means?

Step 1: 𝑢 = 68 𝜎 = 3 𝑛 = 25 𝑁 = 2,000
Step 2: 𝜇𝑥ҧ = 𝜇
𝜇𝑥ҧ = 68
2 2
𝜎 𝑁 − 𝑛 3 2000 − 25
Step 3: 𝜎 𝑥ҧ =
2
= = 0.3557
𝑛 𝑁−1 25 2000 − 1
Step 4: 𝜎 = 𝜎 2 ҧ = 0.3557 = 0.5964
𝑥

Step 5: The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means is 68 and
the standard error is 0.5964. It is a good estimate.
Seatwork

The scores of individual students on a

national test have a normal distribution
with mean 18.6 and standard deviation 5.9.
At Quezon National High School, 76
students took the test. If the scores at this
school have the same distribution as
national scores, what are the mean and
standard deviation of the sample mean for
76 students?
A. Read each statement carefully. Determine whether each statement is true or not.
Write AHA if it is true. If the statement is false, change the underlined word to make
the statement true.
1. The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means is greater than the
population mean.
2. The standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample means is also
known as the standard error of the mean.
3. As the sample size 𝑛 decreases, the standard error 𝜎𝑥̅ of the mean increases.
4. A poor estimate is obtained if the standard error of the mean is close to zero.
5. If random samples of size 𝑛 are drawn from a population, then as 𝑛 becomes
larger, the sampling distribution of the mean approaches the normal distribution.

B. Solve the given problem.

The scores of the examiners in the entrance examination is SLSU Lucban is normally
distributed with mean of 48.5 and standard deviation of 6.25. From Sariaya West
District, 65 students took the examination. Describe the sampling distribution of the
sample means.
