Lab 4 EDC

The document is a lab report for an experiment conducted to understand the VI characteristics of a Zener diode in forward and reverse biased conditions. The objectives are stated as becoming familiar with Zener diodes and understanding how they work under forward and reverse bias. The report includes introductions to Zener diodes and the experiment. It then details the procedures, results tables and graphs obtained from Proteus and hardware simulations and measurements of voltage and current values under forward and reverse bias. It concludes by explaining how a Zener diode can act as a voltage regulator.

LAB REPORT 04
VI characteristics of Diode
OBJECTIVES:
1. To become familiar with zener diode.
2. To understand how it works on forward and reverse biased conditions.

Introduction

Zener Diode

A Zener diode is a type of semiconductor device that's designed to conduct electricity in reverse
direction when a specific voltage, called the "Zener voltage," is reached. When the voltage across the
Zener diode exceeds this specific value, it allows current to flow through it, effectively regulating or
limiting the voltage. This makes Zener diodes useful for voltage regulation and protection in electronic
circuits.

QUESTION:

Explain Zener diode act as regulator?

ANSWER:

A Zener diode can be used as a voltage regulator. A Zener diode operates in the reverse breakdown region,
and when it is reverse-biased beyond its breakdown voltage, it exhibits a relatively constant voltage drop
across its terminals. A Zener diode acts as a voltage regulator by maintaining a constant output voltage
across its terminals when it is reverse-biased and operating in the breakdown region. This makes it useful
for providing a stable voltage source in various electronic circuits.

Conclusion

In our lab we have explored a new type of diode which is heavily doped and operates in reverse
biased condition called Zener diode. We learned the VI characteristics of this diode, the graph of this
diode between voltage and current and also made the forward and reverse circuits on porteus and
hardware as well.
