Q2. Aniline is to be cooled from 200 to 150 ºF in a double-pipe heat exchanger having a total
outside area of 70 ft2. For cooling, a stream of toluene amounts to 8,600 lb/h at a temperature of
100 ºF is available. The aniline flow rate is 10,000 lb/h. infer (a) If flow is countercurrent, what
are the toluene outlet temperature, the LMTD, and the overall heat-transfer coefficient? (b) What
are they if the flow is parallel? c) What differences are there in the answers between parts a) and
b)? Why do these differences arise? d) If the overall heat transfer coefficient was constant
between counter flow and parallel flow which geometry would require a larger heat transfer area?

Why? Cp for aniline= and toulene= .

Q2. A steel tube with 5 cm ID, 7.6 cm OD and k=15 W/m C is covered with an insulative
covering of thickness 2 cm and k 0.2 W/m oC. A hot gas at 330 oC with h = 400 W/m2 oC flows
inside the tube. The outer surface of the insulation is exposed to cooler air at 30 oC with h = 60
W/m2 oC. Infer the heat loss from the tube to the air for 10 m of the tube and the temperature
drops resulting from the thermal resistances of the hot gas flow, the steel tube, the insulation
layer and the outside air.
