Reliability Centered Maintenance RCM Implementation and Benefits

Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a methodology used to optimize maintenance strategies and ensure assets continue functioning as desired. It was developed for the aviation industry to reduce high maintenance costs. RCM involves identifying failure modes and their effects. Potential causes of failure are determined and consequences of failures are identified. The best preventive maintenance plan is then defined to avoid asset failures based on frequency and importance. The seven key questions of RCM are then answered to structure a suitable maintenance plan for an organization. Post-implementation, the plan is analyzed and indicators like MTBF are monitored to ensure effectiveness.

5. BENEFITS OF RCM IMPLEMENTATION

After implementing the RCM methodology, or-
ganizations tend to increase their competitive-
ness and vision in their respective market. Some
of the expected benefits associated with the im-
plementation of the RCM strategy are high-
lighted, such as: the reduction of corrective
maintenance activities; reducing the costs of
maintenance programs; the increase in the avail-
ability of assets; and the increase in the longevity
of assets.

The considerations below are the result of a study
carried out by the authors where, in addition to the
related literature, a survey was carried out on
roughly 100 professionals, which produced the
following results:
• Nowadays, more organizations are looking
for new management techniques to remain
competitive in their respective markets.
• RCM implementation tends to optimize an or-
