Sheet 5-3

This document contains a set of practice problems related to physical layer communication networks concepts like multiplexing, line coding schemes, and synchronous time-division multiplexing (TDM). There are 8 questions covering topics like calculating signal rates given data rates and multiplexing parameters, analyzing extra bits from small clock rate differences, drawing line coding scheme graphs, calculating bandwidth needs for frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) of voice channels, determining frame sizes and rates for synchronous TDM, showing the contents of output frames from multiple TDM sources, and determining the bit streams at outputs of a TDM demultiplexer. The document provides practice problems and exercises for students to apply concepts related to multiplexing and physical layer signaling for digital communication networks.

Sheet 5: Physical Layer (Multiplexing & Media Links)

1. Calculate the value of the signal rate for each case (r = 1, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.5) if the
data rate is 1 Mbps and c = 0.5. [CH_4, pb-13]
2. In a digital transmission, the sender clock is 0.2 percent faster than the receiver
clock. How many extra bits per second does the sender send if the data rate is 1
Mbps? [CH_4, pb-14]
3. Draw the graph of the NRZ-L, NRZ-I, psedoternary, Manchester and differential
Manchester line coding schemes for the following data streams: [CH_4, pb-15]
a) 00000000
b) 11111111
c) 01010101
d) 00110011
From the graphs, guess the bandwidth for this scheme using the average number
of changes in the signal level.
4. Assume that a voice channel occupies a bandwidth of 4 kHz. We need to multiplex
10 voice channels with guard bands of 500 Hz using FDM. Calculate the required
bandwidth. [CH_6, pb-13]
5. We need to use synchronous TDM and combine 20 digital sources, each of 100
Kbps. Each output slot carries 1 bit from each digital source, but one extra bit is
added to each frame for synchronization: [CH_6, pb-16]
a) What is the size of an output frame in bits?
b) What is the output frame rate?
c) What is the duration of an output frame?
d) What is the output data rate?
e) What is the efficiency of the system (ratio of useful bits to the total bits).
f) Repeat if each output slot has 2-bits from each source. [CH_6, pb-16]

6. Show the contents of the five output frames for a synchronous TDM multiplexer
that combines four sources sending the following characters. Note that the
characters are sent in the same order that they are typed. The third source is silent.
Source_1 message: HELLO, Source_2 message: HI, Source_3 message: ,Source_4
message: BYE. [CH_6, pb-23]

7. The figure below shows a multiplexer in a synchronous TDM system. Each output
slot is only 10 bits long (3 bits taken from each input plus 1 framing bit). What is
the output stream? [CH_6, pb-24]

8. The figure below shows a demultiplexer in a synchronous TDM. If the input slot is
16 bits long (no framing bits), what is the bit stream in each output? The bits arrive
at the demultiplexer as shown by the arrows. [CH_6, pb-25]
